Yah, it's the professional thing to do and you should have let him know in a couple of weeks in advance (which apparently you didn't). Also, don't do anything stupid (telling him this and that, how you hated the job, etc.) that may come and bite you in the ass later on. Unless you are rich, then do w/e the hell you want...

As fun as it would be to go out with a bang..

In today's world.. when dealing with your sources of income.. NEVER EVER burn bridges.

Let them know what you are doing and give them notice.. be friendly as and professional as you can about it because life has a chance of throwing curve balls at you when you don't have anything to fall back onto.

Norelco & Devek covered it. Don't burn your bridges and always try and remain professional.

Giving more than two weeks notice to backfill your position and get a new employee up to speed will reflect well on you as well.

Today is my notice of two weeks, not my last day. Would you have suggested more? I think 2 weeks is fine, personally, but then again this is my first quitting!

I only gave two weeks at my last job. I was smart though and did it over Thanksgiving break, so I got a Thursday and a Friday off, so it was really 2 weeks - 2 days notice. I couldn't wait to get out of there!

I've heard the amount of notice you give depends on how long you have worked with a company, and maybe position at a company, as well. Someone like Bill Gates can't just put in a 2 weeks notice.

for most entry level people 2 weeks if fine. If you are a key player in a major project that could be stretched to one of the deliverables.

At least you aren't in europe... do they still have contracts w/ 6 month notices?

    why is a letter necessary?

The letter of resignation is more than a professional courtesy, a formality or standard business etiquette. It is a very important step in your career. Your letter will be retained on your personal file at Human Resources.
If you need your current employer as a reference, if you ever reapply or if the company headhunts you, a high quality professional-looking letter of resignation will make a positive impression.
    ...I did not know this.

I actually gave my 2 weeks notice verbally recently, but this job has nothing to do with my future career anyways.
    You always need references, always.

Most states are 'at will' employment, which mean you can leave when you want and can be terminated when they want.

That being said, 2 weeks is standard for professional positions, 4 weeks is usually desired for mid-mgmt and higher.

In some institutions, the benefits and 'cash out' of banked paid-time-off (or vacation days) is based on the notice you provide, so it's usually best to check w/ HR.

I'd write a letter, and good luck w/ your MBA, mine has helped me tremendously with my career.

Think it is OK if I give notice today and bring a letter tomorrow?

I would think that's acceptable, let your boss know you'll provide it in writing tommorow. He could be casual and say that it's not needed but do it anyways.

    Dear [name of your boss],

I am writing to you today to officially tender my resignation from [name of your company] effective [your final day]. It's been a pleasure to work for [name of your company].

    Sincerely,
    [Your name]

Check your policy, if there is one. Most companies have an employee handbook so you see what the termination policy requires of you. To further complicate things, if you live in an at-will state, you can be terminated at any time for any reason whatsoever (exception: federal jobs) without much recourse. I've definitely heard of some places where the day you put in your two weeks notice they terminate you on the spot. I guess it depends on how much damage you can do and the potential for mischief before you depart.

I'd write the letter though, give one copy to your immediate supervisor and the other to the HR manager. Keep it short and sweet, you don't have to go into a lengthy explanation of why you are leaving. You don't owe them shit as far as an explanation, but your coworkers will probably ask if you haven't already told them you're heading back to school.

All you really have to say is:
    (Block Heading, your name/address)

    (Salutation, hopefully not "Yo bitchez:")

I am resigning as (position) effective on (two weeks from that day). Thank you for the opportunity, I have enjoyed my (time) with (company). If I can be of assistance during this period of transition, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Sincerely,

    (You)

Everything has been covered in this thread but it might be worthwhile to check to see if they have a tuition reimbursement plan. If you like the company they'd pay for it and you wouldn't have to work with them forever. A lot of people I know leave after 6 months or a year for a better job. Nobody stays with the same company these days and they don't really expect you to. If you hate the company then I wouldn't do it but otherwise it may be worth a shot.

Actually, I want to move to North Carolina and go to UNC's full time program. If I wanted to stay in DC, or do a part time program, I would. But in my opinion the full time programs offer more.

Oh and by the way, I did it. Did the letter too. Thanks to everyone for their advice. Only 10 more days to go!

Feels good to quit a job on your own terms. 8)

BTW, the danger of giving a lot of notice (like a month instead of two weeks) is that the company might decide you let you go early. Kinda sucks when you were depending on those last couple of pay checks.
