Fuck New York and/or the US government.

So my father died a few weeks ago at age 44 suddenly. His carotid artery apparently was too narrow from his diabetes. He had been in and out of the hospital for the past 4yrs pretty much every month for at least 3 day stays. He was on medicare and after waiting 3 fucking years to get awarded his disability award he finally got it, only to die a month later. Amazing how being so sick with diabetes isnt considered a disability but alchoholism is.

Anyways he was given 2 retroactive payments. One I used to pay for his funeral costs and everything. The other is basically what is left for his estate. Apparently the government cant take that back, BUT Medicare can. Apparently even though they "help" you out by paying your hospital bills when you cant, if you happen to die and leave a chunk of money to your kin Medicare can just swoop in and take it away.

I find it appaling and a load of bullshit that this can go on. Any thoughts or anyone gone through this before?

That is horrible. It's very sad that companies like that treat people in this way after something bad happens.

Yeah im a raging pessimist so im not too hopeful. I can only hope they dont notice my father passed away or they dont act on it. Im assuming there is a time frame in which they need to act.

That sucks ass, my condolences about your dad

My dad passed away at age 49 (I was only 14) due to blockage in the heart/stroke

He got bamboozled by the Imam of my Mosque (Muslim Priest) not to get life insurance because its Haram (not kosher), he didn't, me, my mom, and small brother suffered thru harsh times.

Wow sorry to hear that. Yeah I dont know if my dad even knew about his carotid artery though. My mom has been taking nursing classes and I have 2 aunts that are nurses and both say something's fishy. They want me to get the medical records from his doctor to go over and see if the doctor was actually doing his job or just writing my dad off since he didnt have insurance.

Another reason to vote democrat this time around. Hillary has some good thoughts on Healthcare reform, I'd like to think some big changes are around the corner for our country if we pull a Dem win. Of the three frontrunners they all have an eye on a more socialized healthcare.

It's obviously too late for you and your family now, but with enough support we can make sure it's less of an issue in the future.

I think Axil's hit this one on the head.

And guys take your politics elsewhere. Advice onry kthx.

Sorry to hear about that, man. If they do steal your payments I'd seriously talk to a lawyer about getting it back or at least getting a settlement because that shit just sounds like some white collar thievery.

My condolences. I cant really relate to the medicare/medicaid problem you guys are having because throughout my life my country has had universal health care.

One thing you might want to look up is whether or not they put your dad on the "pending approval" scam. Basically insurrance companies are leaving people on pending approval, so they cannot begin treatment or even appeal the rejection. Recently we've had a few cases like this but I think it is now illegal up here now(might be wrong)

Edit: Yeah this shouldn't be a politics thread.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Is there anything that can be done about the Medicare situation?

Yeah, I dont know if there is anything I can do about it though. If it happens that is. Im just hoping the greedy little fucks wont come after it.

Where do you live? I did a google for healthcare a little while ago, this got my thinking and I read Germany has a pretty good system. Ive never heard of that scam but yeah I wouldnt put them past it. Recently my moms insurance redid their list of what they will pay for and took almost everything off the list. Amazing how companies can get away with fucking over average americans.

And yeah like Nayr said, I dont buy into anything a politician says about healthcare or anything. They just want that position in the office. We arnt about the betterment(I think that's a word) of the normal people anymore in this country it seems. If there's a buck to be made who cares how many people you crush or hurt.

Protip: check under his name. Where it says "Toronto, Canada".

Germany does have a good healthcare system but unfortunatly to become a German citizen you had to have been born there. Im not sure whether their system covers EU citizens, its something I should look up when I got nothing better to do. But if you do move to Germany try your best to get health insurrance, because even in nations where they do have universal health care, they almost always cover just the basics so its a good idea to get additional coverage just incase.

And dont take this off into a political battle but Clinton did try to expand Healthcare back in 96 or 97 but because of the 94 midterms his attempt at getting it by both houses failed miserably. Some politicians try to help society out, but they are far and few between nowadays.

If only socialized healthcare meant better healthcare, we'd be in a perfect world. There's a reason why people from European countries come to the US for medical treatment.

If you really want socialized healthcare, you should move to Canada.

On the topic, I share your pain - my thoughts are with your family in this tough time.
