So my father died a few weeks ago at age 44 suddenly. His carotid artery apparently was too narrow from his diabetes. He had been in and out of the hospital for the past 4yrs pretty much every month for at least 3 day stays. He was on medicare and after waiting 3 fucking years to get awarded his disability award he finally got it, only to die a month later. Amazing how being so sick with diabetes isnt considered a disability but alchoholism is.
Anyways he was given 2 retroactive payments. One I used to pay for his funeral costs and everything. The other is basically what is left for his estate. Apparently the government cant take that back, BUT Medicare can. Apparently even though they "help" you out by paying your hospital bills when you cant, if you happen to die and leave a chunk of money to your kin Medicare can just swoop in and take it away.
I find it appaling and a load of bullshit that this can go on. Any thoughts or anyone gone through this before?
Another reason to vote democrat this time around. Hillary has some good thoughts on Healthcare reform, I'd like to think some big changes are around the corner for our country if we pull a Dem win. Of the three frontrunners they all have an eye on a more socialized healthcare.
It's obviously too late for you and your family now, but with enough support we can make sure it's less of an issue in the future.
