Hmmmmm I guess Yin-Yang is pretty tacky then. Since I never see people with that tattoo, I figured it would've been a bit different but I guess not Really, I'm just looking for something meaningful. I just have no idea what ;x

I'll relay some advice I remember reading in a similar thread here.

Whatever you think you might want to get tatoo'd on you, get a picture of it, print it out, and hang it up somewhere like your fridge, where you'll see it everyday. Leave it there for six months or more. If by the end of that time you aren't sick of seeing it, then you can live with it on you.

I quite like this idea, seems like as close as it can get to gauging whether or not you could have a tattoo.

yin yangs, butterflies, chinese symbols (especially if you're not chinese) are all really tacky, cliche, stupid ideas that every 18 year old moron has. If you get a tattoo, make it something really meaningful to you, representating of yourself, and something you will 100% NOT regret for as long as you live. I know very few people who have tattoos that don't regret them 5 years down the road.

imo if you don't have your heart set on anything that is meaningful to you, don't get a tattoo yet. Spend a lot of time thinking up ideas and creating something symbolic of yourself. Don't rush it, it is permanent. Your ideas of 'cool' will most likely change as you get older.

Spoken like someone who has no ink. It doesnt affect you that way during recovery. Think of sunburn, and add itching to it. It has nothing to do with muscles or ability to use your hands (or whatever was tattooed). I had my forearms done, then went and did a push up PT test for the military the next day. Skin, not muscle.

If you wouldnt get it in English, dont get it in another language.

Would the chinese symbol meaning "Long Life" look as cool in english on your neck? Cause that's how it'd look to a chinese speaking person.

Dont do that. Think for yourself and be different. Being in a different language doesnt make it cool.

Tramp stamps, chinese symbols and the like won't bring as much satisfaction as something that means more to you personally would.

I'd personally never get one because I think they look crappy on girls (girl's bodies are supposed to be soft and pretty and all that..). I did the whole piercing thing but that was pretty much just a phase I went through, even though I still kept my naval and nose piercings. I occasionally wear some earrings (used to have 13 in total). I only wear a couple now. To each his own, though.

If you THINK you have an awesome tattoo idea, sit on it and wait for a couple of months. Stare at it every day, and see if after a time frame you're still as enthusiastic about getting it as you were when you first thought of it. Like suggested above, drawing, or having someone draw it on you is a good idea too to get a feel that it'll be permanently on you.

If you still like it after a good while, go for it.

General don't:

1) DON'T get something off the wall. Tattoos generally are an expression of one's self, so be original/creative and put something that has meaning on your skin. Besides, you don't want to have a tattoo that's identical to like 20 other people out there :/

2) DON'T get your girlfriend/boyfriend/current fling's name tattooed on you. 99% of the people who do are getting it covered over in a few months, or having "FUCK" added above the name.

3) Really REALLY think it over. You don't want to be the 'tard with the DBZ guys tattooed on your calf.

4) BE ORIGINAL. Kanji, tribal, asian-esque art (dragons, tigers, yinyangs), "thug" tattoos (especially if you're a scrawny white kid..), so on so on... overused and overdone

5) Browse around, check out artist's portfolios if available at the shops, talk to the artist/some of their customer base if you can to get a feel if that's the right person to tattoo you, etcetc... I made the mistake of a semi-hasty tattoo on the back of my neck from an artist I wasn't 100% familiar with is work... and I'm still in the process of having it repaired/covered by my usual tattoo artist. And ones along the neck/vertebrae huuurt ;x


Suggestion: ©your birth year, on your ass. Small, cheap, and easy to hide. Besides, it would be an awesome conversation starter (or stopper...). I'd get it done for shits and giggles, but the tattoo artist who does mine is one of my best friends, and I really don't think he'd appreciate having to tattoo something on my ass.

I did the whole "zomg18tattooyaaay" thing, and while I love my tattoo I got (red bird, inner wrist), I do regret it a bit. Mostly regret the red... was pretty, but I didn't take well to the ink, so it got fucked up a bit. Seriously just take your time.

Like I've already said, maybe I was just forcing the decision to get a tattoo purely because 'I can'. I've decided not to, but I guess if the time comes and I feel 100% positive about it, I'm going to do it.
