Haha, I'm not sure if this is really awesome or really, really stupid.

Controller.
Scrolling through the macro list isn't as time consuming and painful as people make it out to be. You can pretty much get to whatever macro set you want in under two seconds.
Maneuverability is the best on controllers, imo.
I prefer controller.
Although I did start FFXI on PS2, I went to WoW for a few months and found how PC unfriendly FFXI's keyboard controls are. This is definitely a console game hehe.

And I definitely disagree with the opinion about whichever one was used first, because I fully learned how to use the keyboard and then switched over to a PS2 style controller. Sure, it'll take some getting used to, but once you're used to where everything is, it is incredibly efficient.
And yes, the game was designed for a controller first. It actually plays a lot like every other Final Fantasy game with one. ^_^
I always liked maneuvering with the full keyboard layout: thumb on the arrows to the left of the numpad, and three fingers on the numpad's 4, 8, and 6. 7 to autorun.
I started playing the game since the PS2 release. I recently made the jump to PC and I snatched up a radio shack PXS to USB converter since I was not use to playing the game with just a keyboard. With the controller you can walk and type at the same time and it makes NM hunting very easy (for me a least). If any one want to try a controller on there PC, I can post a pic of the configuration to have the buttons set just how they are on PS2.
Xbox360 controller vs PS2 controller?
Started playing on PC with keyboard for a while, then bought an adapter for my ps2 controller, and now I really hate having to move around and hit macros and such with keyboard, its just so slow and cumbersome to me.
Thought I wanted to stab myself when I went from all-controller on FFXI to playing WoW, now I would hate to have to move via a controller.
It's probably whatever you're most accustomed to.
Started playing on laptop and I got used to using a trackball. Now I use a normal PC and use keyboard but I still love using a trackball.
Identical to myself.Originally Posted by Quixotic
Keyboard only, I don't touch the mouse or a controller. Just more comfortable with it, I guess.
I'm not gonna say one is 'better' or 'worse' but I know that I, personally, handle my macros better on a keyboard than I ever would on a controller.
i started game playing on ps2 so used controller and a keyboard, when i got the pc version i was just used to playing that way so i stayed using a controller i could see why people would prefer keyboard though just a creature of habit myself i guess
I'm faster with keyboard. Plus I can play and talk easier aswell.
Playing a job like rdm or whm where you need to land spells on people in your party that keep blinking out and jobs where you have multiple macro sets keyboard is best speed wise IMO. Everything else though, controller is just as good and a lot more comfortable on my hands/fingers than keyboard. The xbox360 controller is quite a bit more comfortable to "hold" in my hands than my ps2 controller also. Haven't actually tried to play ffxi with the ps2 controller though.
like a few others, PC with just keyboard at first, now use a controller for just about everything.

I started playing on PS2 and then switched to PC. Not being used to using the keyboard for everything, I had to keep the controller. However, when I'm playing support mage I now type out all my spells. Enfeebling, nuking and songs are all controller macro, but cures, erase etc I hardly ever use controller macro.
I love playing with the controller, I've definitely tried keyboard, but I couldn't get a good grip on maneuverability with it, just wasn't my thing. I like macros on controller a lot better too.
If I could open the magic menu(cltr+M) with the Select button on my Xbox360 controller, I might use it full time.
I don't use macros for nukes or cures or -na spells... in fact, I only use macros for equip switchs, enfeebling spells(the ones I need while solo, gravity/sleep/ect), drain, and aspir. I only use 1 line of macros at a time.
