    PLD/DRK

For the sake of showing im not a conventional hardass that wont try anything new.

PLD/DRK vers major HNMs (Cerb, Vrtra, etc) with an aegis. And naturally, a haste setup.

The idea? Aegis's overpowering ability to negate physical damage + Haste setup stun/flash >= PLD/NIN PLD/WAR. You rely on aegis to negate hate loss from dmg and having flash/stun to build even more hate then just flash or flash+voke.

The idea was presented to me, not my own. Open to comments. I know were a community of sarcasm and we are very critical but this is SERIOUS BUISNESS

Yea, I guess Souleater Kraken is completely worthless then because there's a chance of dying.

Having to cry for cures is for pussies.
    --------------------------------------------------------

    @ Tekki:

I've tried PLD/DRK on very basic stuff, namely Sky pop nms/gods, and its been very effective. As long as you're sporting around 300 shield skill, wearing a healthy mix of enmity and damage down gear (be it defense, vit, actual dmg reduction, etc) you'll have pretty nice results. Fully merited sentinel helps too, since you basically end up taking no dmg while its up.

The hate-loss from the damage you do end up taking is negated by the string of cure-iv anyway, nevermind doubling your hate capabilities w/ an extra, more useful flash (stun).
    ---------------------------------------------------------

People can say what they want, but I have both PLD and NIN to 75, had ideal gear on both, and couldn't even come close to maintaining the same level of hate on NIN as I could on PLD.

Call me shitty if it makes you feel better about being a NIN, but the only person whos ever given me any faith in the job for tough HNMs is RKenshin, and he pretty much doesn't count because hes a god or something.

You're a PLD, you're supposed to be tanking.

Who gives a fuck if a DRK dies. Your tank with Aegis is a different story.

Plus you're only converting 5% of your current HP to damage with each hit, while you're losing 10%... and you're supposed to be tanking.

    Yeah, no thanks.

Your gonna eat a lot of dirt.

Just stay /NIN where practical... Aegis' dmg mitigation is nothing like enough to keep the hate threshold the same as /NIN on something like tiamat.. especially during low HP mode.

I guess it could be kinda useful for vrtra depending on how your LS fights it, other than that only use i can think of it is for JoL when its weak to drain.. more hate tools than /WAR and drain/aspir are highly effective even with DRK subbed.

He specifically mentioned mobs that don't hit incredibly hard, Vrtra, Cerb, etc. I wouldn't go up against something that can randomly double attack crit for 900 dmg each without shadows either.

But on mobs like Cerb, etc, where a shield block with aegis translates into taking 45-70 dmg, as long as you're wearing enough skill to make the proc capped for what aegis can do, it'd be entirely possible, and you could probably hold as much hate.

Now, I wouldn't exactly advise stunning mobs that build a resistance to stun which need to be stunned at low life every 22 seconds, but thats a different story. But the point of his question I think was just to ask "can it be done", and while the hardest thing I've tried PLD/DRK on was Suzaku, I'm pretty sure it can be. FFXI is too fking easy to always take every fight deadly serious, gotta have some fun sometimes.

It'd be at least 25% less dangerous.

I personally think PLD/BRD w/ Aegis pre-mazurka nerf would've been damn amazing, but I never got to try it since my brd is only lvl 25.

Lancealot, Tribe PLD on Asura tanked a bunch of stuff PLD/DRK for shits and giggles pretty successfully, I'm certain he tanked Faf with /DRK, pretty sure Nidhogg and Tiamat too, this was before his Aegis too. I don't recall it ever causing a problem for the ally.

If it was a "planned" HNM or if you had the right support it could work, but for those late night / early morning HNM's where you barely have the people, i'd stick with /nin
