I am not going to try to clarify that using other people's sig is right or wrong here, thats a different issue.
If an SFLS members uses a signature belonging to someone else, and the creator of that signature is bothered because an SFLS member uses his sig, why does it reflect entirely on the linkshell that this person who took the sig belongs to? you already 'hate us' just because one of our members uses your sig? It not like SFLS encourages their members to steal sigs. If the person who took your sig wasen't in SFLS, but another LS, would you still go out and blame that LS for this person's action?
Someone on this forum stole my old bubbly bernie sig for his avatar!!1!

... but it's ok, since he asked first and I told him he could use it since I replaced it.
There was a thread on BG a while back about people "borrowing" my corsair sig.

actually you are right i dont know anything about internationel Copyright law.Originally Posted by aurik
Im german, and i know about german copyright law and that says that no idea belongs to you untill you get the "patent" (no idea what that would be called in english) for it.
a patent, but I think thats more to do w/ actual ideas/concepts/scientific designs.
I don't know the specifics but I assume there has to be some basic protection for original art work, such that if I drew a picture, you couldn't take the picture, claim it as your own, and sell it for $100, so long as I had proof that I actually made it.
I took a basic intro to design course last semester, and the professor told us that any original piece of work that you create is automatically copyrighted to yourself by law. He does that kind of stuff for a living so i think i can trust him when he says that.
Now whats questionable about the sig is the fact that it uses two entities which he himself did not create - a tarutaru and an image from 300. Does he get some kind of copyright protection simply for designing the sig, even though he can't claim ownership of tarus or 300? Honestly I have no idea.
Although it is true that an artist/w/e doesn't need a copyright or trademark on the piece of work, in this case logic tells me the person in question does not hold any rights to the image. This is based only on the assumption he did the good olde cut n paste from the original work (300 and FFXI).Originally Posted by theo
A clear example is Duchamp's reproduction of Leonardo's Mona Lisa. Duchamp claimed it as his own because he drew it and "added" additional elements to it (a mustache and goatee -.-

It's not even hard to fix things like that in mspaint. It has a white background behind the text so you could just scribble over it in white. Poor MSPaint gets a bad reputation. ; ;Originally Posted by Tricen
As for the OP, whether it's protected under copyright law or not, it's pretty stupid to leave the name there without even asking the owner if you could use it.
It's a derivative work, so TSM could theoretically get a Cease&Desist about it.Originally Posted by theo
That said, the statement that "theres no copyright [symbol], therefore it's not copyrighted" is incredibly ignorant.
