Might I ask for some help?

Sorry to be treading in the deep waters of such experienced & hard working crafters, but I have a question!

My friend has loaned me the use of one of her characters who is a 97+2 (almost 98!) Goldsmith, with a 57 Smithing sub.

I'm trying to synth a Kaiser Shield, which is a HQ Koenig Shield.

The ingrediants are:

Earth Crystal
General's Shield
Adaman Sheet
Gold Sheet
Gold Ingot

Currently, I'm under the impression that the best method by which to attempt for HQ on this is: Facing SE, during Windsday, during a Full Moon. Of course, I'm hearing lots of conflicting information.

It's all luck. Facing a certain direction on a certain day when picking your nose with the planets in a certain formation won't give you an HQ.

Actually your best idea is to hit the 'H' key while making your items, it always works for me.

You may be surprised to find out I'm not trying to compete against you in sales, or even make this for profit at all. All the work I put into Paladin I do for my LS!

There is no more to hear. That's it. They aren't lying... time makes no difference, and IF it does, no one has been able to even think of a way to quantify it.

If you have the materials, synth. If you don't... buy some and synth.

I personally think that day of the week helps with HQ. Although it's hard to say because i do most of my synths on the same days I've noticed a higher percentage of both breaks and HQs when synthing on day opposite of your crystal. There will most likely never be any conclusive proof so your best bet is trying it on differant days and moon phases and drawing your own conclusion. Good luck with kaiser =P

Currently tracking myself over 1100 synths with earth crystal and day/moon are not yielding anything that would help you with one synth (and single digit variations are statistically meaningless with my sample size).

Only thing I think might still be true at 5000+ synths is maybe lightsday has less chance of break. Will likely be tracking at the end of 2007 and still go "I have no clue". I only expect to eventually prove to myself that it's all BS.

That said, I think the "old" (read "zam") theories favored NM to FM for HQ, and Darksday for all crystals. Personally I have not found either to be true, again not with large enough stats to prove it. I maybe-kinda-sorta still believe in direction but meh.

The only proven impact on synth result is skill with respect to synth level, and the hq tiers (+11, +31, +51 - lowest skill on multi craft synths prevails). The break rate of 5% per craft skill also seems pretty well accepted. But even these are not consistent and only prove out over large samples.

I do for some stupid reason still believe in crafting timers for skill ups - once I started using them I went about 50% skill up even in the 90's. I think the "old" theories/charts/timers made an assumption that the same conditions that made a skill up favorable would also have the same impact on HQ odds. But I don't personally think that is the case. Your scenario below would be the ideal skill up for someone 3ish below cap according to those charts.

The only rules I now follow:
Never synth anything that will make you sick to break
Never synth only 1 and expect HQ
Never synth for people you don't know
Never synth for someone you do know if the NQ result is cheaper than the main ingredient unless they are rich and prepared for a break
Get support any time it counts even if it won't break another hq tier


That is all....back to tracking.

P.S you no doubt realize your recipe (97 gold/57 smith) means you have about a 1% chance of HQ?

its a tier 0. Normal HQ rates are 2%. You could have any number of contributing factors, and unless you do something like 10k+ attempts (good luck Aerides) any meaningful modifier would be so small its almost negligible.

You guys forgot that you should also equip the elemental staff that corresponds with the crystal you are using. As we all know, this is the reason why you can't change equipment while synthing.
