SUMMER BOOK THREAD

I'd say depending on how into the book I am it takes me about an hour for between 80-100 pages.

.... that's nuts. I can read maybe 100 in a few hours if I'm interested. Mostly because I read hella slow and I zone out while I read and I'll go through like 3 pages and realize I missed crucial details so I'll go back and reread. That's the worst. So I usually end up taking about double the time hence the "few hours" for 100 pages.

World War Z: an oral history of the zombie war

You would be better off with audio version, which is freaking awesome. Since the book is interview/report based, it really adds more depth to it with voices. Plus, the Mercenary's voice is just perfect for it.

just start reading "Middlesex", a well written novel mixed with witty humor and descriptive historical backdrop. recommended.

i just finished ender series' "ender's game" and "speaker for the dead", they are stories well conveyed, not to mention, very easy and fun reads. 4.5/5

Is it (the newest book) any good? I've been really disappointed with the last couple of Palahniuk books I read. Diary and Invisible Monsters were just the worst. The whole little stylistic things he add just get fucking tiring by the end of the book. Misty Wilmot saying the same thing three times in three different formats for impact starts to lose the impact when it's used so often. If you read Invisible Monsters, you know what I mean when I say his "flash" technique really started to break up the flow of the story for me.

I really enjoyed Survivor and Fight Club. Lullaby was meh, but at least it wasn't irritating to read.

Edit: I just started "The Moon is Feminine" by Clemence Dane. I picked it up on a trip to the central library when they didn't have what I'd originally intended to get.

His new book Rant is good (search forums for the thread), the only one I didn't care too much for was Diary and Haunted.

I just read I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. It's a great book (they are making a movie of it due out December 2007, which brought it to my attention in the first place), albeit a bit short at a little under 200 pages. It's pretty much your standard zombie/vampire survival story, except that it was written in the 50s, making it the precursor to all of the cliches that exist today.

If you like survival/horror stories, pick this one up for sure.

Try Frank Herbert's "Dune" series, not his sons.

Also Robert A. Heinlein's "Starship Troopers", "Stranger in a Strange Land"(I didnt like it, but a lot do), "to sail beyond the sunset", honesty a ton of his stuff if good.

I liked Alan Dean Foster's, "The Dammed" Series.

Hrmmm, I liked the "The DragonCrown War Cycle" by Michael Stackpole. Start with the "Dark Glory War", a prelude.

Heinlein's stuff is definitely worth a look, I'm not a huge fan of straight sci-fi but his are nicely written.

Sort of a necrobump but just thought I'd post here instead of creating a new thread. Anyways, I've started A Song of Ice and Fire series(currently on the 3rd book with the 4th on the way) have also ordered the Wizard for Hire(aka The Dresden Files) series as well as Asimov's Foundation series. I plan on starting the The Wheel of Time series if I have time later this year.

With so many games and other means of entertainment, I sometimes feel as if books are really starting to lose their appeal (to the younger folks/kids) in our society.
