    severe crashing problems with vista

posted this originally in windower forums, posting here too in case i can find more help.

    First, the problem:

Basically since i'd installed vista (brand new format, newly built computer), i'd been having intermittent crashing problems. The game would just close right to desktop and windows would prompt me asking if i wanted to look for help or close the game. This happened mostly in dynamis for a while, and then at one point in dynamis-sandoria, i crashed and everytime i logged back in i'd crash 5 seconds after (about 6-7 times in a row before i gave up). Now i'm afraid it's a threat to happen no matter where i go.

    so, my specs are:

    Processor: E6300, intel core 2 duo, OC'd from 1.8ghz to 2.62.
    RAM: 2 gigs Gskill F2-6400CL4D-2GBHK
Card: nvidia 7800 GTX OC version

I'm using vista ultimate, 32 bit and xtreme-g mobileforce vista 101.46 drivers from tweaksrus.com as any others gives me the nvidia bard song/firaga lag problem. The rest of the drivers for sound etc. are just the ones that normally update with vista.

In addition, I have UAC disabled as well as secure desktop disabled.

For a little further reference as well, the error logs from event viewer look like this:

Faulting application pol.exe, version 1.18.0.0, time stamp 0x45b0171b, faulting module ShimEng.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bdb7, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000446d, process id 0x2410, application start time 0x01c7af7d93f63ef0.

Faulting application pol.exe, version 1.18.0.0, time stamp 0x45b0171b, faulting module pol.exe, version 1.18.0.0, time stamp 0x45b0171b, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000a788, process id 0x1db4, application start time 0x01c7af7c87a8f170.

Faulting application pol.exe, version 1.18.0.0, time stamp 0x45b0171b, faulting module FFXiMain.dll, version 3.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4668cef2, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00169030, process id 0x119c, application start time 0x01c7af38a1963b55.

    or

Faulting application pol.exe, version 1.18.0.0, time stamp 0x45b0171b, faulting module nvd3dum.dll, version 7.15.11.141, time stamp 0x45e82e47, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00158406, process id 0x1370, application start time 0x01c7af3cf868f595.

with the last one being by far the most common one.

i'd appreciate any help, cause if i can't find anything that works i'll probably just try XP, and i'd prefer not to have to redo everything. i could handle this error every now and then but it seems like now it's constantly ruining the things that i do.

    thanks in advance.

Well, the last error is caused by your video drivers, so I'd suggest you stick with the latest from nVidia and not the tweaked ones. I'm not sure what pattern nVidia follows, but AMD releases drivers every month it seems, and I thought they did too.

    gb2winxp

I had vista ultimate for all of a month and crashed every 15 mins, sometimes more frequently, tried every set of drivers (even dating back to the release of vista), similar setup to you, 4gb corsair ddr2 e6600 oced to 2.8 7950GT(then) 8800GTX(now) and asus striker extreme mobo..same intermittent crashing only in ffxi, but diminished performance in every other game (150 fps on cs source @vista, 200+ @xp pro)..sorry if its not what you wanted to hear but vista =

Re: severe crashing problems with vista

I know a few people from my LS have complained of similar with Vista, and I get it on my laptop (which came with Vista pre-installed and is still a pretty clean install as I haven't had it long enough to install my usual load of crap on it).

Re: severe crashing problems with vista

on vista i had like 15 fps just idling in whitegate in a corner, fighting fafnir it was below 10, meriting my fps would drop <5 during WS, it was just horrible, I kept waiting for a fix to come out for the crashing and the shitty performance and just said fuck it and went back to xp, now I'm camping fafnir in a 50ish person aery on 3360x2100 bg rez and 1680x1050 foreground and have 29 fps standing with max settings and full shadows in the middle

The second one is the main one that happens all the time, I get the same errors as the original OP. Where I will crash 10 times within 5 min. I'm really at my wits end with this as to what is causing this. Sometimes i wonder if its cooling issue as it will happen in Dyna an beseiged. But recently it has been happening Just walking into diff areas
