Re: New CPU pieces for FFXI

what about the CPU, will it be able to run FFXI with above average FPS? currently my fps is about 10-15 in a party and around 5-10 in dynamis. it's really crappy and is ruining my ffxi gaming experience all i really care is to have good enough FPS to see the extent of like weaponskill animations and magic animations and not to have choppy gameplay the entire time.

Dual core is your best bet.

if you don't wanna spend the 230 bucks for an E6600 i'd look into one of the lower model ones, but still you'd definitely want a dual core.

    maybe an E4300 like
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115013

    asus mobo
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131041

RAM - this is 2 x 512 mb sticks, spend the extra few bucks for 2x 1gb if you have it left over.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145568

    GPU

With your budget i think this is along the lines that i would go personally. I'm not saying that you should get these parts, as i'm not sold on the GPU. For your bugdet it's good although the reviews say it's a tad loud, but still a good card. I would save and spend a little more to get a gtx or gts 8800 and spend a little more money.

These 4 parts are all compatible, and should transfer things from your old PC if you wanted to and runs you at 325 dollars (not including tax or shipping).

Like i said, I'm not saying buy this instead of what you've chosen, as i'd rather spend the extra money (like i did) and get a little more expensive stuff that'll last longer. but on a 320 dollar budget this is probably what i'd get.

i think ima go with these 4

    mobo 77
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131041

    processor 117
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115013

    vid card 50
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125033

    ram 64
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145098

comes out to about 308$ without shipping and w/e.

took the mobo and processor you suggested and mixed em with the vid card and ram i wanted.

now the only thing i really really wanna know is if this setup will run FFXI with pretty nice results, not the crappy 10-15 fps eveyrwhere i go. It's just ruining the gameplay when i spin my camera to see a person coming towards me and my fps drops to like 10. ((

You should run well, as people have said ffxi runs mostly off processor, and the core 2 duo's are great processors. You can overclock that CPU also and the motherboard should handle it, you'd have to check into the memory as wellthough as there's no sense overclocking it if the memory can't handle it either.

even with no overclock that should be good. better than your old stuff anyway.

if you really want inexpensive stuff, you should be watching the deal boards (slickdeals, fatwallet).

This deal was alive for a night or so, i think it was last thursday:

    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/ ... orig_cs=60 99&oc=R4104ECIRC1D&

    AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 3600+
    Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Basic
    No Monitor
    1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs
    160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
    16x DVD+/-RW Drive
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Integrated Graphics GPU
    Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Dell USB Keyboard and Dell Optical USB Mouse
    No Floppy Drive Included
    56K PCI Data Fax Modem

    Choose No Monitor

    = $219.00 w/ Free Shipping

Use DPA for additional 4% off
would have given you more wiggle room for video, but no OC possabilities, unlike with E4300 and non-dell mobo like you picked. they also had a deal at frys (if you live near one) for retail e4300 and a crappy ecs mobo (it works tho haha... maybe) for cheaper than newegg is selling their E4300. basically would have been a free mobo. if your budget is that tight, i think you should spend some time to see what kind of prices people been getting.

last note on ram: might as well go with this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... C8Junction

same price (free shipping) for XMS Performance ram. gl w/your shopping bro

edit: same price i meant ($64.99+$4.99 shipping vs. $69.99 free shipping), keep in mind tax and shipping so you don't go overbudget.

What happens to FFXI on Nvidia's 8800 series cards? I am building a new comp. and was planning on getting a Geforce 8800 GTS 640MBs.
I know there are FPS issues with those running Vista. I have FPS issues on XP. Pretty much whenever more than 15 show up on the screen, my FPS goes from 29 to 10-15. I highly doubt my processor isn't sufficient.. Core2Duo running at 3.4Ghz.

There are posts on the windower and nvidia forums, and I believe I recall seeing some here before about the issue.
Try upgrading to 160.03. Its not officially out yet, but it has been "leaked." Doesn't work for everyone, but it has been known to fix some of the 8800 Vista issues. Personallly, I have no problems with any game on my 8800 running XP.

If you can wait till july 22nd, rumor has it AMD / Intel are going to start chopping prices on their chips by 20-40%.

I heard there is gonna be a price dropped too, at least for the Core 2 Duos soon. Since Intel is planning on releasing a sort of updated version of the higher end chips that will run at 1333Mhz FSB, instead of the current 1066Mhz FSB. Or something along those lines.

i'm holding off until then also, but might be E6600 since its unlikely E4300 is going to drop a huge amount. chips with good reputations at $100 or so will probably be my jump in point
