    Re: Abstinance

Abstinance-only education has been proven to be astronomically ineffective. Abstinance is a viable option, and should be treated as such, alongside other viable options of birth control and safer-sex techniques. Otherwise it's a terrible waste of taxpayer dollars and classroom time. It's a shame.

    Re: Abstinance

Abstinence is 100% birth control, if you dont do it, its not gonna happen.

But yea, saying the stuff they are is kinda dumb really, of course I didn't have sex as a teen... (i was 22ish my first time...) and i know that this campaign is aimed at kids... it's an attempt at a scare tactic that doesn't work... just the same with smoking and alcohol and drugs... you can say all the stuff you wanna say about it and people are still going to do it...

why waste money on an abstinence campaign when you could spend that same money and promote safe sex, giving out free condoms or other forms of birth control?

I can see how teen sex can lead to depression and stuff just through the fact that most teens aren't mature enough emotionally to handle the emotional attachments of sex (some of you will argue against this but you know its true >.>) and thus they get depressed and whatever, but its not all of them, and it doesnt happen everytime... idk its stupid to me, id rather see them promote safe sex (since i like sex! and stuff>.> lol)

    Re: Abstinance

Teaching absistance doesnt work because it doesn't teach safe sex for those that actually do it. Teaching kids about the dangers such as AIDS, pregnancies, and other STD's is probly the most important thing. Teaching people about proper safe sex uses causes far less unwanted pregnancies because at least people have the knowledge about what can happen if you dont use it. I know nothing that there isnt anything 100%, but at least its getting pretty damn close.

Stupid is as stupid does. You're the ignorant one here. Abstinence-only campaigns and teens that practice abstinence are more likely to perform anal sex and contract STD's. They are also more likely to perform oral sex coupled with anal sex. These teens also lie more often to cover up sexual activity after promises made in abstinence programs and such. Abstinence-only program success rates are miserably dismal as these teens also are usually the ones to break the "promise" and have high underage pregnancy rates.

Any teen that has psychological problems in relation to sex does not experience it because of the sex itself, it is because of the American social stigma bound by religious belief on sex. It is imprinted on kids at a young age that it's a bad thing to do, period, in most cases. This is a phenomenon that doesn't occur in most European countries with much less stigma and restriction on sex and sexual education and media.

The problem is overblown and asinine religious persecution of anything that feels good.

So either you're just regurgitating bullshit you heard on TV without researching the facts, or you sadly enough believe this right wing religious control bullshit. Either way I feel sorry for you. The problem is the social context religious nuts put into a fear of anything that feels good. What needs to be taught is safe sex, you can't prevent what nature intended. Kids hit puberty and go through natural sexual feelings. If they are properly educated by their parents and social system about STD's and teen pregnancy and made aware that it is ok to have sex, albeit safely and not too often, problems like we have today wouldn't be a problem.

Science and numbers back that. No amount of evidence backs any claim of abstinence besides nutty religious types whose imaginary friends book said its bad mmmmmkay.

Edit: It's the abstinence-only kids that end up psychologically fucked up regarding sex, which lasts well into their adult lives leading to performance dysfunction and sexual perversion. As was studied and written by Freud and his colleagues.

I know a girl who is like that, probably because she HASN'T had sex lol, though that will hopefully change in the near future.

i think they are attaching the almost certain situation where first timers can get attached to their partners emotionally again in the almost certain situation of them breaking up and with that break up comes the depression and emotional abandonment with suicidal tendencies. even though it's a result of it, it's not directly causing it >.>

Abstinance is bullshit. It's fine if you want to wait till marriage, good for you. Some people dont. To tell kids though that all these horrible things can happen because they are having sex though. I love how more money is put into the budget to tell kids to not have sex then how to have sex safely. If we started educating kids about safe sex there would be a huge change in STDs and pregnancy.

    Re: Abstinance

Teaching Abstinence-only is akin to having a class where the only thing you do is hold the book shut while the teacher tells you what not to do...while describing absolutely nothing in the book you bought for the course.

Trying to derail one of the most primal human impulses (whether done with or without the actual intent to reproduce) is the world's best way to produce more fucked-up humans who preach the exact same thing. Which is the entire purpose, of course. Insanity is much more comfortable with plenty of company.

    Re: Abstinance

Abstinence ad campains = Welcome to a country where religion and government aren't spilt. Which IMO isn't so good, in 2007.

That being said, explaining children and adolescents that sex is something that they shouldn't experiment too early is not a bad idea at all. While young people are physically perfectly able to have sex at 10-11-12 yo, most children don't have the mindset to face parenthood, STDs, or the simple fact that girls consider sex as an important involvement in a relationship, while boys can have sex without any thought of involvement, feelings and such...which can lead girls to depressions and all sort of bad things in a children's mind.

As it was posted above, these ads should focus more on the safe-sex part, though. I bet most kids don't even understand the word "abstinence", so you might as well teech them safety, better than leaving them on their own, where all sort of shit can happen ><

Don't-have-sex propaganda. Whatever, teens will usually do whatever the fuck they want, given a chance, regardless. I think it's more important to teach them about condoms and such, but meh. People are retarded.

Agreed. People think because you're teaching safe sex that you want every teenager to be f--king someone every chance. Just because you're teaching it, doesn't mean they'll turn in to sex-crazed maniacs (even though most high school boys think like that anyway (I was there once). It teaches them prevention and helps 'em not end up with some BS VD when they graduate, lol.

Considering the current administration; it is six of one, half dozen of the others.

    Re: Abstinance

Emotional problems come after sex, whether you're married or not, because of emotional attachment. If you aren't able to emotionally distance yourself when it comes to sex (most every teenager and some adults can't) then that is where the problems come in.

I'm religious, yea. I believe sex should be something special, yea. But I also enjoy it, and I'm also human. People shouldn't really be trying to preach abstinence... they should be trying to preach responsibility. Something more like, "Look. We know you're going to try to have sex whether we tell you to or not. But if you're going to have sex, be responsible. Know that you might get emotionally involved and be unable to separate the sexual feelings from your real feelings. You might also risk pregnancy and early parenthood, as well as sexually transmitted diseases. The choice is really yours to make, but we hope that whatever choice you make is right for you and that you deal with the consequences of your actions in a responsible manner".

What I believe to be most of the problem today is parents don't really want to be hard on their children (Whether it's because of fear of child services being pricks and not letting them discipline them properly) so most children end up spoiled, resentful, and ignorantly irresponsible.

Telling teenagers it's okay to have sex isn't right. It really isn't. That doesn't make sex bad. It just means they really shouldn't be taking it upon themselves to enter such an emotionally connecting bond with someone else. When you get older, it's much different since your feelings towards love and sex get separated more and more every passing year.

Of course, some teenagers are mature enough to see this already. Most aren't. You have to treat them all the same, or you create double-standards.

    Anyway, yea.

People who have emotional problems after sex also have emotional problems before sex. But I do agree, responsibility is what needs be emphasized.

It's also because it's ingrained into our kids heads that sex equals love, and people think that sex should be withheld for "that special person." And that being promiscuous is shallow. Listen, there are several facets to a relationship and sex is one of them. You aren't going to find the right person just because they go to the same church or like the same books or tv shows as you.

And alot of these people with the "sex is bad" or "right person" mentality are almost always if not always always extremely sexually insecure which causes emotional issues and relationship strife. If we're taught early on to be comfortable with our bodies and sexuality, and that it is ok to learn through experience - I think we'd be in a better place as a society.

Obviously responsible education on safe sex is key here, but there's a serious fucked up mentality regarding the issue that only adds to the problem.
