    Ok,Parents Need to Start Parenting

in case your too lazy to click the link:

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- British censors Tuesday banned a video game for the first time in 10 years, rejecting U.S.-published "Manhunt 2" for what they described as an unrelenting focus on sadism and brutal slaying.

The decision by the British Board of Film Classification, or BBFC, means the game, from publisher Take-Two Interactive Software, which made the controversial "Grand Theft Auto" series, cannot be legally supplied anywhere in Britain.

The ban prompted one U.S. family group to start lobbying for a rating to ensure major American retailers cannot sell the game. In it, players become an insane asylum escapee sneaking up on enemies and killing them in gruesome ways.

In a statement on the board's Web site, BBFC director David Cooke said rejecting a work was a very serious action and not taken lightly. He said the board preferred to consider cuts or changes but that was not possible in this case.

"'Manhunt 2' is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing," he said.

"There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game," Cooke said.

Take-Two could not immediately be reached for comment.

The BBFC noted it was the first game to be denied a classification since 1997, when "Carmageddon" was rejected for having players run down pedestrians. That decision was overturned on appeal.

The BBFC said the Take-Two label Rockstar Games that created "Manhunt" had the right to appeal the decision.

"Manhunt 2" is a follow-up to the 2003 original, which was classified in Britain for people aged 18 and over.

The U.S. nongovernmental organization that evaluates games, the Entertainment Software Rating Board, has not yet given a rating for "Manhunt 2," which is slated for a July 10 release.

The Boston-based Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood urged people to write the ESRB and demand an "Adults Only" rating, which means it could not be sold by major retailers.

"An "Adults Only" rating is the only way to limit children's exposure to this unique combination of horrific violence and interactivity," group co-founder Susan Linn said in a statement.

I'm sorry, I must have missed the part where kids buy video games and their parents have no knowledge that they have bought/play/own the game. Would Parents start being active in their kids lives, and stop letting the media raise their kids?! Shit, with all the Radio Censorship that goes on too, it's like parents want to have kids and go "Ok, now we let the world raise you," instead of actually parenting and teaching them values and ideals. Jesus whats this world coming too...

Wait, you are not the famous scientist, Dr. Otto Octavious?

On topic though, I already know I'm going to be a pretty strict parent. When I say strict, I mean that I want to take an active role in whats going on in my kids lives. I think its stupid to give birth to kids and then let them have/do whatever they want.

Banning those games from stores is the answer, parent involvement is the answer obviously. My brother is 14, and he is still not allowed to play GTA games. He wanted them when they first came out and my mom told him no because hes too young.

it'll sell more copies than it would had they just let it through. Most of these violent games/ explicit music sell better with their warning labels.

as for strict parenting: are there any reliable statistics concerning how much more trouble a child with very strict parents get into, over that of a child with only moderate restrictions. excluding children without any form of rules.

There's a delicate balance needed, but I hate how parents 90% of the time noawday don't do anything. When I played video games when I was 8-10yrs old, I wouldn't have dreamed my parents would let me buy a GTA Style game. Hell, my first M Rated Video game was Goldeneye007 for my N64. My parents knew i was mature enough then and allowed me to start buying M Rated games. But they NEVER let me buy a game if they didn't look at the package first to at least see what i was interested in. It's all about being involved. You don't have to be a ultimate strict parent because your involved. Tell your kid whats right and wrong, share time with them. talk to them, its called parenting ><

That's crazy talk! Parents these days are far too busy at their prayer circles/swinger parties to be bothered with the little monsters that they squirted out. No, it is our responsibility as complete strangers to bring up these children in the way that their parents would want if they could be bothered to interact with them.

it's not like Manhunt 1 was any good anyway. In fact I always hated manhunt because whenever I saw people making examples in their anti-voilent video game craze, I always saw that game mentioned. And I just want to scream who fucking cares nobody played it.

Now what someone needs to do is develop a game like Manhunt 2 for the Wii, where you use the controllers to perform actions like snapping someone's neck, or stabbing. Maybe a knife that follows the motions that you use on the wii controller, and allows you to slice parts of the body and see guts spill out depending on where you slice!

    See what people think, then.

Hell, I'm betting someone will complain that a violent game for the Wii would have "not enough distancing" even if there weren't a lot of gore like I just described. However, I'm sure one day someone will have a game where you kill people by stabbing them with the Wii controller, or twist their head off by taking the controllers and making the same motion with your hands. That's when the real fun will begin.

I had a couple friends who played Manhunt I and thought it was pretty good. Opinions right?

Regardless, Devek is right, this isn't parenting. This is banning a game completely. And that's just bullshit.

Re: Ok,Parents Need to Start Parenting

Kids are just a fashion statement. Have been for years now. How dare you suggest that people invest effort into monitoring the goings-on of the human beings that they created and are responsible for raising over the next 18 years.

I think in 10 years, we're going to look back at these photos of random retards and celebrity retards with screaming, crying shitmachines in tow and laugh just like how we laugh at leg warmers now. Then a few years will go by and those little shitmachines will have grown into full-on adult angstmachines. They will probably come into work one day and shoot and/or stab everyone in the office, possibly including you or me, because we all know that simulated violence is so close to the real thing that it not only gives you the strength, but also the nerves of steel necessary to gut real people with a hunting knife. Fucking video games, making kids so violent!

Well, I gotta get back to my training on Madden 2008. I'm going to be a quarterback in the NFL when I grow up!

Re: Ok,Parents Need to Start Parenting

What parent does know everything their kid does?

When i lived at home the only time my mom new what i was doing was when i told her or if i got into trouble and school or someone had to call her. And while my mom may not have known everything i was doing, she is one hell of a parent, albeit with certain flaws, but she's human.

my point is, you don't have to know everything your kid does or plays in order to be a good parent. as long as you teach them certain concepts and let them deal with and experience them on their own.

With that said, 80% of kids today are retarded and couldn't handle that kind of freedom anyway and be responsible.

In other news, what platform is this game on i didn't see that anywhere in the thread?
