Re: GED tests, anyone ever take one/know someone that did?

In my opinion, for what it counts, insulting someone's education is on the same level as insulting someone's job. Most of the time, people do what they have to do to make ends meet. If someone has a hard time in school then they do what they have to do to sruvive and make a life for themselves. I don't feel I have the right to judge someone else's choice of career/job/parttime, whatever they do.

Its not my place, just as I got my internship doing web design, I could easily find my career field low when I graduate OSU, what good would my BS in CSE do then? It'd be hard and i'd have to put my ass in gear. You put effort into making something of yourself regardless, not my place to judge.

Ironic you mention reading comprehension and literacy, because I've stated explicitly in this thread that I wasn't talking about "everyone". Did not read it? Or not understand it? And you keep mentioning the piece of paper, yet you fail to realize that it isn't about the piece of paper at all. The only people who would trivialize what you get out of a high school education by saying "it's just a piece of paper" are the ones that couldn't (or wouldn't) handle what was necessary to get one. And yea, it's very easy to get that piece of paper and still be a dumbass, given our substandard educational system.

You seem like the type of person who wants to put the weight of the world on everyone's shoulders but your own. If you fail a class in college, it's because you had a shitty teacher. Or maybe a shitty book. Or maybe the TA couldn't speak English too well. Or maybe you were busy working another job and didn't have time to apply yourself. But it certainly wasn't your fault was it? How many times when I was in college was I sitting in a class, and got a test back and heard all these mumbles "fuck that teacher, look at this shit. 65"? Too many. Because of people like you who only care about the ends, and not the means.

The end result of any education isn't a diploma, degree, or certificate. It's what you put into it. And the amount you have to put in to get the maximum possible score on a GED is shit compared to the amount you have to put in to get the most out of high school.

Maybe if you stopped flip-flopping on your arguments and decided on a point it wouldn't have gotten this far and you wouldn't feel so obligated to defend yourself every time.

In each consecutive post you go between saying people with GED's are underachievers and stupid, to agreeing that GED and HS can be obtained with minimal achievement and the rest lies on the person. You made one hell of a thesis by somehow molding both of those points into one post and making like, no sense at all.

Thanks for reiterating what four others have said and then trying to inject your own half-thought out ideas and insults
I don't know, maybe next time just say "I agree but I disagree?" And leave it that.

I went to high school in the southern US. If you think there was anything to be learned outside of how to get pregnant or fake a disability and rely on the government for the rest of your life, you are mistaken. The amount you get out of high school is not only dependent on yourself and how much you are willing to put into it, but how much it's possible to get out of the system. I would not be exaggerating to say that I continued to cover the same material that I did in middle school until my senior year. The public school system here leaves something to be desired, and this is coming from someone who did take honors and AP classes in high school. It's a fucking joke. It's a babysitting service for young adults.

Just an example story: in my freshman year of high school, my geometry teacher had a breakdown because of the divorce she was going through. Instead of teaching us, she literally sat at her desk every day, cried, and I assume e-mailed her friends while she left us to our own devices. Everyone in the class got an A. If I learned a single fucking thing about geometry during that year, it was definitely no thanks to the public school system.

You keep playing up high school as though it's the be-all and end-all of education. There are some high schools that are good, where you can learn a decent amount. You have to realize that the majority of our nation's schools range from shitty to barely passable, though. In the vast majority of cases, people do not go to high schools where they are actually challenged by any stretch of the imagination. If you were lucky enough to go to a good one, then kudos to you on your superior geographical location.

As far as the rest of that post, you are completely talking out of your ass. You have absolutely no background on my education. What you said is so ridiculously off the mark that bothering to refute it would only substantiate it. That's all that even needs to be said.

PS: Perm, right here buddy. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a188/Ivve/761251.gif

If it didn't make sense to you, perhaps your reading comprehension could use some work.

I've had the same point all along.

Therefore, not being homeschooled and getting a GED means that either:
    a) You're so smart that you're beyond high school.
    b) You didn't get the most out of high school.

If b, then you clearly don't appreciate all high school has to offer, and you probably aren't even aware that what you (have the potential to) learn in high school is more than just a bunch of facts, and no test can accurately measure that aspect.

Here divisor I'll do you a favor. I'll cut out your ignorant remark about how many of what kind of who has a GED and we'll just say in your opinion your paper is better than someone elses.

Consider it an early Christmas gift from me to you.

All I learned in highschool, was that till your older, no one respects intelligence. And even then it's still under rated. I learned 80% highschool girls care more about who is popular, who can buy drinks w/fakes, and who throws the best parties, rather then people that would actually be worthwhile dates. Oh, and that cafeteria food is still crap.

Accurately Enough, I would agree, minus senior year in highschool where I busted ass and pulled off about 45hrs in Credit, for college courses, GEC and Major, not just easy credits. So...the world as far as post-college doesn't care about highschool as much.

Although I think the arguement is whether a GED is equal to a HS Diploma, regardless of college entered etc.

Because the first 18 years of your life might possibly have some minor effect on everything that happens after the first 18 years of your life? Just because people don't sit there in a job interview asking you if you ever got an F in middle school doesn't mean it was a completely irrelevant time of your life.

You clearly don't know shit, and just like to make wild assumptions about people. You're not done saying dumb shit, so I guess I'm not done taking dumb shits on you.

Let's re-establish some points you've made in this thread:

    A) the majority of people with GED's are inferior to those with HS Diplomas

Read above. Case in point, you don't know shit and just want to judge people from your keyboard. What are you so insecure about that you feel the need to attack people you don't know for some benign reason?

    C) People with GED's are an entire inferior culture

What is that veiled racism? Why not just say "stupid brown immigrants?" I had no idea there was an entire culture based on people with GED's. But hey there are two legit cultures of people with a GED ohshi....

I can go on and on about the endless dumb shit you've spouted in this thread. Here's a towel,

Re: GED tests, anyone ever take one/know someone that did?

I finished HS and got a diploma... but I'll have to agree most of it is worthless heh.

For the most part, the general education system does not care about your intelligence while in school, but your work ethic. I personally failed a few classes due to not doing homework, whilst doing amazingly well on the tests. Sadly, 60% of the grade in the classes ended up being doing homework Even had my AP english teacher comment on how the hell I ace vocab tests, but don't study or do the homework.

edit: I actually had my history teacher pass me due to acing all the tests, while doing little homework. He got fired on the next semester. He was one of the best teachers I've had so far, not solely due to his leniency. Such a sad fate that teachers can't make their own judgments on the capability of a student.

All the memories of HS I cherish/hate were all about social situations... the education was pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Now in college, I tend to focus on how awesome course material or the teachers are instead of who I know in the classroom.

Can't remember who said it, but someone mentioned that poor teachers aren't an excuse for failing a class. Only partially true in my opinion. There was one teacher who had a very very thick middle eastern accent, was hard to understand what he was saying about course material I had no real interest in. (was an intro to EEish class, and I'm a programmer ; Because of that, I had to study in the book extra hard since I had no auditory learning to rely on. Then there's a few teachers who very distinct in their speech, and tell you what you need to know. I've had classes where I didn't have to touch the book at all due to this, which was very nice.

There is still a class I failed that I blame the teacher for tho... Mainly just because of my viewpoint tho. There were less than 10 total grades in the class, so missing one hurt a lot. I had to go out of town over a weekend, which was when a report was due. Problem was, he refuses to accept papers (just reports, no physical attachments needed) over e-mail or other means even though he checks his email daily. In the current age of technology, I can't see why someone wouldn't accept it over electronic means much less hassle than handling physical papers. I even offered to print it out for him when I got back, but he still tossed it.

WHOOOSH, the fuck are you talking about? lol. At first I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, I thought you might have made it through the GED and been one of the "smart ones". But clearly not. stupid brown immigrants? Where did that shit even enter the conversation? Guess what Einstein, "culture of people who are content with inferiority" = American culture. The fact that blacks, whites, browns, and yellows are content with GEDs is merely a symptom of a larger problem. Again you're making this grandiose assumption that there are a large portion of people that are just content with a GED. Please tell me from what magical 8 ball do you get this information?

You sure as fuck seem to know alot about the GED program and those that graduated from someone that's so intent on insulting the majority of people who have one. And on top of that you're arguing against people who have been through the program and / or taken the test trying to prove your inexperienced and baseless points.

And don't try to go back and defend yourself by putting America in front of it when you made no connection in the first comment. You know exactly what I was talking about, and you know exactly what you were talking about.

The question I have is, since you've flip-flopped on this the past two pages as well; So is it the individuals fault? The substandard educational systems fault?

I know this is a stretch for you, but why can't you just man up and say you spoke to soon without taking into consideration other situations that place someone on the path to their GED vice an HS Diploma?

It seems like all you want to do is carry on a tantrum in front of everyone and point fingers to blame for problems you obviously don't have to worry about. You're like some spazzy kid with ADHD banging toys together yelling at his mom for a cookie who acts all surprised when he gets laid out by pops. Get the fuck over yourself, seriously.

The only people that don't respect intelligence, don't have it or are in the very small percentage that has an overabundance.

high school itself doesn't matter. Nobody cares what you did in highschool unless you are applying to college. Once you are done with college nobody gives a shit about highschool anymore.

As zhais said, in college all i cared about was the material and the professor. I was better friends with some of my psych professors than I ever was with the majority of students in my entire college career except for 3 including my current GF.

What pisses me off is people who scoff at college though. Like i worked for a short time (2 weeks) at a lincoln-mercury dealership where this guy who worked there dropped out of college because it was 'useless'. I don't care if people have a GED or Diploma as i'm not a college admissions counselor, but this guy would just sit there and tell me that I wasted my time and my money and a college degree is useless and he dropped out after 2 years cause he's the greatest man alive. meanwhile he's working at a car dealership where (no offense) all you need is a GED and a smile to get hired and working 60 hours a week at what was the worst job i've ever experienced in my life.

Meanwhile i've since quit there working 60 hours a week at essentially 6.67 an hour to a place where i sit inside, make a few phone calls, get paid a hell of a lot more, have weekends off, and can only get hired if you have a completed degree. I don't sit on a high horse, cause even a bachelors doesn't go that far anymore, it's all about higher degree's now. But to say that a B.S. or a B.A. is absolutely useless and bash on me cause i finished mine pissed me off to know end.

Point of that, is whether or not you finish high school and get a diploma or drop out and get a GED is negligable. Finishing college vs. dropping out of college actually is something to be proud of as a degree means something.

Having been through the program and taken the test, you obviously you have a biased interest in seeing the GED system not being denigrated. I would argue that not having been the program makes me more qualified to speak unbiased about the matter.

Pretty sure I said it was a cultural problem early on. And last I checked I live in America, and America has... you know, a culture. There's the connection.

Quote Originally Posted by MF Perm

I would say it's a combination of the parents' fault and the educational systems fault (although the two are intertwined, the reason the education system has degenerated so far is largely in part due to the substandard parenting prevalent in American culture (and no, I don't mean stupid brown immigrant culture)), and the fact that it's a parental problem makes it a cultural problem as well. Does that mean the individuals are off the hook? No, because if you let people off the hook it means you've started to ingore the problem.

Because I didn't speak too soon. Why is it people always throw the "omg just admit you spoke to soon" when they've done absolutely nothing to convince the other side of their stance? lol.

Sure is strange how America has such an overabundance of "other situations that place someone on the path to their GED" compared to other countries who have no such overabundance. Could it be a warning sign? NAHHHHH!

I even offered to print it out for him when I got back, but he still tossed it.
I'm taking a english 102 class atm over the summer, and my teacher will ONLY accept papers by email, lol. The teacher I don't really like though, all he does is read from the text book the entire class, he doesn't even fuckin add any of his own shit to the lecture.

Re: GED tests, anyone ever take one/know someone that did?

    Blah blah blah.

A GED proves you know the (laughable) material covered in highschool.

A highschool diploma proves you knew the material AND were responsible enough to have physically attended 4 years of something as obviously retarded, mind-numbing and pointless as american highschool, which is a very powerful skill for out in the real, working world.
