I was upset that after scoring high on test after test, including SAT's and SCAT ( not sure if this was done in other states than Florida ), among other classes where I would skip for days and come in and ace a test because I could sit and absorb information from a book easily - I continually got bad grades for low attendance and not doing homework or schoolwork.

In my youth it was a little disenfranchising for me. So I would just skip school and smoke buds all day. They finally gave me an ultimatum: Join the GED program to graduate or we expel you.

And you aren't being unbiased, and I won't even argue further since you obviously have no concept of that word in contrast to what you've written and the points and counterpoints of this entire argument.

Yes, I'll give you that is part of the problem. But this is far more complex and has many facets that you're obviously missing. There is a class gap as well, and obviously lower class neighborhoods and schools do not receive the adequate funding and teachers they need to pump out good students and keep the majority of the student population locked in.

There is also no compassion for situational needs as I had outlined earlier which so you carefully skip over in every response like they don't exist. That certainly helps the problem.

This has nothing to do with any side of the argument. You gave an ultimatum saying these two are ok to have a GED, everyone else is a failure and it's this and that and their own fault. You did speak too soon and lumped an entire section of people whom you have no idea of into one group and judged them.

If you can't see past that you're beyond help. And it's funny to see you think you're the educated one.

What exactly is your base of comparison? What countries have you been to to judge their educational systems successes and failures compared to ours? What programs do other countries offer in comparison or contrast to our own as far as HS and GED?

Again, you're all up in my base talking bukkake to my dudes. You don't have a comparison base, you're just making another wild assumption that X amount of people are getting their GED because of our lazy culture and that they're stupid.

The real problem is dumb motherfuckers like you running their mouths making ignorant comments and not having the balls to face up to their faults because they think the evil lies in embarrassment of their egos over the damage to the greater good. No amount of education can justify this, and certainly not the source of it.

I think everyone who wasted 2 years of their life to get a high school diploma is a failure honestly.

When a smarter person can pick one up in just a few min a la GED you are really going to have to stretch the truth to justify actually finishing high school.

I could say that, for people intent on getting into Ivy League schools and such that want a resume of all the top Honors and Advanced classes, extra-curricular activities etc etc there's an incentive.

But for someone that wants to cut straight to a State 4-year or something, it doesn't matter.

Apparently though for people like divisor it's all about the memories of masturbating in the gym shower with Prell. The high school experience nahmean?

The act of attending and completing is a quality employers do look for. No one expects you to actually retain any of the actual information.

    My point stands.
    1) You finished college and you can just put that on your resume and they won't notice or care that you skipped high school.
    2) The job you are applying for doesn't require a degree or any skills so you can lie and say you went to high school and they won't notice or care that you didn't.

High school is just a waste of time when your brain is in a position to actually learn things and new skills.

I went to high school but I missed out on the "good parts". My Junior prom we got kicked out cause we were smoking out in the parking garage. My Senior prom she was pregnant.

Graduation owned.. the principal is all like handing everyone their diploma and shaking their hands and just to be a jackass I asked him if he knew what my name was.. he didn't

High school is just retarded. Even if you wanted to go to a nice college I would imagine getting straight As from another school for your first two years and than upgrading would be cheaper and more impressive to a college than bragging that you were in the fashion show.

That's about as bad as what DT has been spouting.

So I went to high school for 4 years, and played varsity sports and experienced my adolescence in it's entirety therefore i'm a failure? As i said earlier, why is everyone in such a hurry to get through the best years of their lives.

And as someone stated at some point, while it doesn't matter whether you have a GED or a diploma, the material is laughable for the GED, and while high school information isn't exactly difficult, there are difficulties.

To say it simply, everyone who graduates high school could pass the GED, not everyone who gets a GED could pass high school.

While the pieces of paper don't mean shit, you can at least have a sense of pride that you accomplished something without either taking the easy way out or quitting altogether. And i'm not referring to people that do it because they genuinely want to get to college faster or people who do it out of necessity, I know that some people have legitimate reasons to drop out.

I don't see how the bottom part of your statement is relevant in any way. If you drop out of high school after your sophomore year and take the GED, then get an associates degree....well you still had 2 years of more schooling and after college and getting a 4 year degree, nobody is gonna give a shit about the associates any more than they would about just finishing high school. The only thing that matters (unless it's a technical or vocational degree) is your last degree obtained 90% of the time, i'm sure some exceptions apply.

Anyone with any experience in college would tell you that not every credit gets transferred all the time. So if you think that you're gauranteed to do 2 years associates then 2 more to finish a bachelors is crazy. you'll do 2 years associates then probably 3-4 for the bacholors in which case all you did was add extra schooling. Rarely will you be able to transfer every credit you earned, especially if you want to go to a private school, or are trying to transfer out of one.

I wouldn't say exactly. I don't think that it matters one way or the other whether someone has a GED or an actual diploma.

The only difference are in the perception of the person judging.

One employer might care, another might not. Personally I don't care in my personal judgement, but if I were responsible for hiring someone, if everything else was equal,i would never hire someone with a GED over someone with an actual diploma.

No, it just sounds to me like he more favors Magnet and Vocational schools which focus on preparing you for certain walks of life and explain to you why you're learning something, instead of designing some arbitrary "one size fits all" curriculum for the masses.

Re: GED tests, anyone ever take one/know someone that did?

I just think that divisor's argument is flawed because he's not measuring GED vs. high school diploma, but rather dropping out vs. the high school experience. Your high school experience != the diploma. I also think that the idea that your learning is dependent on how well you do in high school is flawed. Things that I learned during my high school years are not the same as the things that I was taught in high school. I would no more credit my high school with teaching me to appreciate literature than I would credit it with teaching me how to give a blowjob. Not all learning takes place in the classroom.

It's also flawed to assume that there are any more stupid people getting GEDs than there are stupid people getting diplomas. Fuck, there are more people going through the school system than the GED program, so high schools have to churn out more fucktards in a cap'n'gown than any other learning program just based on the numbers.

Unless your learning ends at the diploma, then it doesn't matter. A diploma does not necessarily represent a willingness to learn any more than a GED.

I would agree with you if any of my employers had ever asked me to clarify exactly whether I hold a diploma or a GED, or asked for any details of my high school career. They seem to be more concerned with what I am capable of now than what I was capable of as a teenager.

BTW I said SCAT earlier as a test I took, I meant FCAT and it is Florida only. Just to clarify.

I'm amazed that people are honestly trying to say straight-up that a diploma is not more valuable than a GED.

    Technically~

Upon inquiry, telling someone you have a GED (as opposed to a diploma) is pretty much the same as saying "I was too lazy and undisciplined to show up to class every day so I took the easy way out." Perhaps, for one out of a hundred of these individuals, this might not be true (ie. taking GED early), but don't count on the person you're telling or the employer reading your resume` to understand that.

    Realistically~

There's not much of a difference between the two once you start attending college and gather units, and actually obtaining relevant training in a specific field for any school or employer to not give a shit about your highschool career. There's still a difference if they did care. If you don't plan on going to college or being employed by someone who looks at resumes... Diploma>GED.

Was purely based upon my first hand experience with people I personally knew who had dropped out and went the GED route. Then again, I didn't hang out with the smartest bunch of kids in my jr/hs days. Stoner/skaters that take the GED might be more likely to be lazy sacks of shit, than say someone who took it that was in the math/computer clubs or someone who played M:tg at break.
