A high school, and college, degree was explained to me by my employers once in a way that rang true to me.
It's not so much that you have a piece of paper saying you know how to do a and b. That's important too, but not critical. It shows you have the discipline to be asked to do something and do it- even if it takes time and is annoying. That you can sit through classes, do homework, etc.
Because in the "real world", it doesn't matter if you know your stuff, if you don't do those measly assignments, go to those meetings, etc. no one will want you.
Which was why I was told, having a HS diploma and any college diploma (in my case, in Computer Science), that I was a better choice over the highly qualified (certified) highschool dropout. Apparently, certifications can be gotten easily with dedication, a being ill-mannered doesn't-play-well-with-others viewpoint can't be untaught.
