    Technically~

Upon inquiry, telling someone you have a GED (as opposed to a diploma) is pretty much the same as saying "I was too lazy and undisciplined to show up to class every day so I took the easy way out." Perhaps, for one out of a hundred of these individuals, this might not be true (ie. taking GED early), but don't count on the person you're telling or the employer reading your resume` to understand that.

    Realistically~

There's not much of a difference between the two once you start attending college and gather units, and actually obtaining relevant training in a specific field for any school or employer to not give a shit about your highschool career. There's still a difference if they did care. If you don't plan on going to college or being employed by someone who looks at resumes... Diploma>GED.
I think it's become less of a discussion about the usefulness of one vs. the other and more about whether or not people who take the GED are lazy, stupid sacks of shit.
According to my first-hand experience, the answer is a resounding 'YES.'
Funny, I don't feel like a sack of shit. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
I think the only real thing to agree on at this point, is that the BG forums are not an accurate representation of everyone that takes the GED. Not everyone that goes that route does it for the wrong reasons. But given everyone i've personally met that has, they were generally moron's who couldn't spell simple words or do simple addition or hold an intelligent conversation. But, that doesn't mean that those characteristics apply to everyone.

Re: GED tests, anyone ever take one/know someone that did?

Divisor could take a lesson from mioko and Skyy. At least they acknowledge other possibilities but two that justify getting a GED.

And yeah, I understand what it looks like to the average person having a GED versus an HS Diploma. When I joined the Navy, because of my GED they didn't want to offer me that school and job - until I took their tests. They even gave me an $8,000 bonus because of the length of the school ( which added two years to my service because of ).

But my point still stands, in general from person to person there is no difference. Someone is not dumber for having a GED, and there are people with GED's much smarter than people with HS Diplomas. And I don't necessarily agree that *every* HS graduate could pass the GED, but I think it would be a very high number. I also think it's exactly the same in reverse. Just because you have a GED doesn't mean you're incapable of sitting through 7 hours of classes, doing homework, and memorizing two weeks of knowledge to pass your average test.

Retards get diplomas for sitting in one room all day taking naps, eating cookies, and reading Winnie the Pooh books out loud.

There you go again, inserting the word "everyone" into places that it didn't exist.

High school is just a waste of time when your brain is in a position to actually learn things and new skills.
High school is a waste of time to you. College is a waste of time to you. What exactly is not a waste of time to you? Everyone should get through middle school and then just self-study their way to a career? Or is middle school a waste of time too?

Let me guess, you went to high shool AND college amirite?

No, it just sounds to me like he more favors Magnet and Vocational schools which focus on preparing you for certain walks of life and explain to you why you're learning something, instead of designing some arbitrary "one size fits all" curriculum for the masses.
I was thinking more about doing what it takes to get in the real world and have a nice career to have money which allows you to do adult things in life which are a lot more fun than stuff you do in high school. The worst part about high school was the sex, nothing worse than fucking chicks who are like "OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH!"

If you can pull 6 digit incomes in without going to college or high school why not?

The only thing I really learned in college that applied to my life was basic philosophy and how to avoid making logical fallacies which is something I could of learned on my own had I been aware that such knowledge would of been so incredibly beneficial

But I meet college grads all the time who lack basic knowledge not only in their fields but of life. Who was I arguing with on this forum that had a degree in computer science but didn't know what SIMD was?

A high school, and college, degree was explained to me by my employers once in a way that rang true to me.

It's not so much that you have a piece of paper saying you know how to do a and b. That's important too, but not critical. It shows you have the discipline to be asked to do something and do it- even if it takes time and is annoying. That you can sit through classes, do homework, etc.

Because in the "real world", it doesn't matter if you know your stuff, if you don't do those measly assignments, go to those meetings, etc. no one will want you.

Which was why I was told, having a HS diploma and any college diploma (in my case, in Computer Science), that I was a better choice over the highly qualified (certified) highschool dropout. Apparently, certifications can be gotten easily with dedication, a being ill-mannered doesn't-play-well-with-others viewpoint can't be untaught.

Not to say all GEDs are unable to work to a high degree of performance, but companies (and people) have a negative view of GEDs due to the number of troublesome ones.

ding ding ding ding. Someone who gets it. Like I said from the beginning, some aspects of a high school education can't be measured with a simple test.

Except some people like myself can't stand being under the authority of people that are incompetent and hate doing what they ask us to do because it is always pointless and retarded and to make matters worse you don't get paid.

Thats why I hated high school yet became very successful working for people that know what they are doing.

It is the same reason my daughter calls her mother a bitch when she tries to tell her what to do. Funny stuff, nothing like watching an 8 year old with 135 IQ roast a 26 year old woman with 105 IQ.

I haven't worked for an incompetent person since my first job at 18. Your point? It was a lesson learned and a mistake I will never repeat. Nothing like getting the FBI called on you(The FBI threatened him for wasting their time) and getting fired in the same day because your boss doesn't know his face from his ass.

So because of your social problems, all of high school and college is automatically a waste of time for everyone?

Re: GED tests, anyone ever take one/know someone that did?

Ever since the dawn of time, education in most societies plays a major factor in the socioeconomic structure. With that "fancy" fanfare out of the way; dropouts have the stigmata that they will have very little chance of being successful in life. Hence, the majority of our society today has the notion that: school dropout = failure. Now, such GED is a "second chance" of sorts for those dropouts that for one reason or another did not graduate.

Yes, some people frown upon those with a GED. /chiche However, in the end it is up to the individual to figure out what (if any) are their limits and overcome them. I'm proud of one of my friends. He was an ex-cholo, tattoos on his head and shit. He fucked up all his youth (all kinds of drugs) went to jail. Bastard got his GED, and took his GE classes, along with his AA in literature. He, along with 5 of us won students of the year. He got accepted to SC and Berkeley. He is now working on his baccalaureate in literature @ Berkeley.

Sup with them white jeans, Dev?
