as OP mentioned, they are special forces. They are roughly the equivalent of any other special forces unit in the world (SEALS, GIGN, SAS, Sayeret, etc), but have a reputation for being pretty ruthless. They are known to not value hostage's lives in terrorist situations, the most famous being in 2002 in a Moscow theater, where they simply killed everyone inside with nerve gas. I have heard them about taking a flamethrower to a school (another hostage situation) which killed the children as well. And the atrocities committed in the still-ongoing skirmish with Russia trying to maintain control over Chechnya.

The more I have read about them, the worse it gets. They aren't held accountable for their operations, and they have committed horrible war crimes. I won't go into some of the other (crazier) things I've read but those who are interested should definitely read up on it.

Showing a video on some of their hand-to-hand combat training from like the 80's is so ho-hum; every special forces unit learns this stuff. The Spetsnaz are different because of the way they resolve situations and the autonomy that they have, not this basic self-defense bullshit.

The no composure is kinda part of their training, they are supposed to be very loose when they fight so they can roll with a punch or knife attack. The owner of a rock climbing gym I went to did this kinda thing, I think he may have trained with some of the major Systema guys a few times, it's pretty interesting stuff although I don't think its as dominating as the people who do it say it is. The system is also very good at taking on many opponents at the same time using their bodies against the other attackers and whatnot.

Although it's sad killing civilians it's a pretty good tactic. It's what Israel imploys as well. Terrorist hostages will die along with any terrorists. What does it do? Makes people think twice about doing ANYTHING there. There are no negotiations, and people know that.
