    Power Surge?

A few days ago, I left my computer on when I went out some time for some dinner. I came back to it turned off, and thought, Hey, I don't remember turning it off!. So I push the power switch, and to no avail. The computer would not turn on at all, not even make a sound. The actual main switch of the power supply was on, and yes it was plugged into the wall. I had a power strip also plugged in to the wall. My speakers and monitor were plugged into the power strip, but not the computer. My question is, what could of been the cause of this breaking down? Could of it been a power surge? If so, do you think my power supply is dead or might it be something else? Should I buy a new power supply, or is there a way to repair it (I doubt it). Thanks.

I had some questions written but then re-read what you typed and please explain this part.

You plugged everything except the PC into the power strip?

have you ever also stuck a fork into a power socket?

Not trying to sound rude, but that is insanely idiotic. Even if it wasn't the cause of the problem or is unrelated, power strips are there for a reason, not just to add extra plugs.

Try a different power lead in case the fuse in the plug went. Failing that, yeah try replacing the power supply and pray it wasn't the board.

    Re: Power Surge?

Have you just tried removing the mains cable for a minute and reconnecting?

Some PC's will overheat or the PSU will overheat and shut down, and won;t turn on again until the mains have been removed/switched off and turned on again. Simply pressing the power button on the front of your machine will do nothing.

Assuming you may have tried this but if not, give it a go.

If this fails, and you did in fact have a power surge then it may not simply be the power supply. Using a surge protector for a PC is considered a must; they're cheap and potentially save you a fortune.

At the back of your PC where the cable plugs in, remove it while it's plugged into the wall. Reconnect it slowly, if you hear a small crack as the contacts connect, then your cable is most likely fine.

Best thing to try, if possible, without having to spend any cash is if you know someone with a little PC electrical background have them test your PSU in their own PC. If the PSU powers up their PC then it's a bigger job and will require testing of most of your components to see which we're affected; Motherboard/CPU/Memory/Hard Drive/Devices Connected etc.
