Re: Odds: 20-1 Getting Trampled For iPhone

Biggest reasons not to get one:
    • 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
    • Removable battery
    • Any flash support
    • Expandable Storage

    Secondary reasons:
    • Songs as Ringtones
    • Games
    • Instant Messaging
    • Picture messages (MMS)
    • Video recording
    • Voice recognition or voice dialing
    • Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP)
    • Direct iTunes Music Store Access (Over Wi-Fi or EDGE)
    • GPS

    Meh reasons:
    • A real keyboard
    • One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)

The first four reasons should be good enough so that anyone wont want to buy one. I thought apple wanted to be 'in front of the game', well with no 3G youre not getting shit. And no removable battery? So when it dies, it dies huh? And im sure it will happen fairly quick due to the movies draining the battery in under 4 hours. Recharging after every 4 hours = a dead battery with the quickness. And no extra space/flash support, how does one expect to play music and movies on it then? Through magical rays of streaming internet, the ones that work with 2G? loool Have fun watching anything at those speeds.

Yeah, I think if there is one thing the people can agree on, its that the above fact is bullshit. Its an iPod for fucks sake, and they're not letting us use songs as ringtones? Hopefully this feature will be added because its so stupidly obvious in the first place.

I'd love to have one, but for 500 dollars I can find better things to spend my money on... but then I'm a poor college student so there you go.

@Priran, it does better than an iPod in the fact that it has a better battery life as far as just audio goes, and it has a much kewler interface. Of course it's not worth the extra 300 bucks to just upgrade an iPod but it's certainly not "not an improvement".

I'm definetely not going to buy one, it's overpriced but I am thinking about buying 3 and reselling for profit and hopefully making enough to justify getting one.

I'd love a touchscreen iPod, I just don't need all the other crap that comes with it.

I think the thing that most people are upset with is that in order to download a new song to your iPhone you need to side-dock it. You can't wirelessly download a song. How dumb is that?

The iPod's battery life was never a problem for me. How many situations are there really where you're listening to music for like 10 hours straight and nowhere near an outlet?

Apparently 90% of the time based on this thread.

However, those demographic groups are extremely important in setting trends and can dictate buying patterns for much larger segments of society. They're also demo groups with large portions of disposable income (whether they generate it themselves or not is neither here nor there) and groups that are outwardly concerned with being technologically savvy through their ownership of expensive electronics.

While I may rag on the iPhone, I have to give a huge props to the marketing folks at Apple. Over the last 10 years they've grown an brand image that encompasses far more than just technology products and moved into selling a 'hip' lifestyle. 20 years ago, if you asked a marketing exec if they thought personal computers would command the same brand loyalty as cars, you would likely get a very quizzical look.

I do agree that the iPhone is likely to be as revolutionary in Europe and Asia, where they actually get the cutting-edge cellular and mobile technology first and not have to wait 3-5 years for it to trickle down into the shitty North American infrastructure and markets. The iPhone will definitely sell to Mac enthusiasts world-wide, just think about how huge the opening of the first Apple store was in Tokyo, but I doubt it'll have as much buzz as consumers in overseas markets have already had access to better technology than North Americans have for years.

Latest video from David Pogue of The New York Times. Pretty much sums up this (and all other iPhone) threads to a T.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=VcRfAaIb2Ro

and an appearance on CBS. Some good insight on this, pros and cons.

The selling point on Apple products, including this iPhone, is not so much that they can do something that others can or cannot do. It is more that Apple tries to make the operation easier and more intuitive. They (we) have the advantage on design because the hardware and software designers are the same company.

Holy shit. I am creaming in my pants right now. Holy shit.

Steve Jobs just had a town hall meeting with all employees and announced at the end that we are all getting a free 8GB iPhone. Since my job at Apple already comes with a company phone, they will pay for the service on the iPhone too. I get a totally free mother fucking iPhone.

Excuse me while I fap in my cubicle for a bit...

    ...42 seconds later...

And I'm back. I'm still in shock. Man, I love my company.

ITT: why you should wish you worked for apple.

iphone will be successful, if only because it's the most intuitive of the current smart phones - will it outsell blackberry? I doubt it.

does it need to? probably not.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it was for Verizon. Nothing is worth going to ATnT.

    Sorry Magus, 2 iPhone limit.

G4TV (I Know, was bored nothing else on so AOTS was on, + Olivia Munn) stated that only 2 phones can be bought per customer, so better bring a buddy along

Also somewhere on one of those 24/7 news channels, in the feed ticker at the bottom, the headline was 1 Million iPhones available @ launch (CNBC,MSNBC,HNN I forget which 1 was just switching channels and that caught my eye + the story of those Strippers giving lap dances @ some golf course on the 18th Hole lol)

cell phones are awesome, they just suck now that they're designed to do everything in the world including make your coffee, drive your car, and do your laundry. its the progression of communication technology. people want a device that can do everything and anything. personally i like keeping my devices separate anyway. my ipod is my ipod, my phone is my phone, and never the two shall meet. at the very least, when either my phone or ipod acts up i dont need to worry about the other one. only reason i'd see one being useful to me is i go out a lot straight from work. this means im usually in a bar with ipod + headphones in my pocket, which is a pain. typically if i see this happening i just leave it at home and go musicless for the day, would be nice to not have the problem. that being said i can think of much cooler things id do if $500 fell into my lap, but i would take one if someone gave one to me for free lol

I think they're an annoyance. Was mankind seriously lost without having to talk while driving? I can't tell you how many times I've been cut off by stupid bitches driving their oversized gas-guzzling SUVs while their head is cocked to one side so they can listen to that oh-so-important phone call that just couldn't wait.

Or how about trying to eat a meal at a nice restaurant without 20 cellphones going off?

I also love the fucking douches that wear their bluetooth headsets in the mall or in the supermarket as they shop, shouting so the person on the other line can hear them clearly, as well as everyone else within a 20 foot radius.

Let's not forget the dumb bitch at the local gym who can't put down her fucking cell for 30 minutes on the stair climber. I'm sure her girlfriend Candy, or whatever the fuck her name is is just thrilled to be talking on her cellphone somewhere else, cutting off some poor guy in her oversized, gas-guzzling SUV. :D

HAHA you're so right about when people are in stores. i work retail, theres nothing worse than trying to help someone who refuses to get off their phone. they need to decide if they want to buy something, or chat it up all day long. the worse though are people with blackberrys, ive had countless times where i ring someone up, bag their wine (I work at a wine shop btw) and they stand there incesently checking messages and shit, with no regard that there are people behind time. people are getting too plugged in for their own good. I always have my cellphone on me when i am out of the house, but its like an ignored, abused child. theres only 3-4 people who i will pick up when they call, and maybe 2-3 people who i will actually call during a standard day, beyond that all i use it for is to text people, typically my roommate that im too drunk at some bar in the city and im bringing a girl home.

I won't deny the usefulness of cellphones, but some people ruin it for the rest by being asshats about it. Have you ever seen a guy with TWO bluetooth headsets? He's so important that he has two separate phones with two headsets so he can talk to two people at the same time!
