Re: Odds: 20-1 Getting Trampled For iPhone

co-worker's boyfriend came into my store today with his iphone, let me mess around with it for like a good 20 minutes. theres still tons of other things I'd do if $500 fell into my lap this second, but I was more impressed with the little gadget than I wanted to be. when the next generation comes out whenever, with some fixes that are still major in my eye (better battery life, bigger hard drive) I could totally see myself breaking down and buying one of these.

Battery life is likely to never change. Hard drive size upgrades won't come for six months or longer.

EDIT: And to be honest, hard drive size is almost a nonissue. The amount of video/music that can be stored on the iPhone will take longer to play than the battery life will allow. My point? You're going to have to hook it back up to your computer to recharge it before you'd run out of things to watch/listen, and at that point you can change what you want on your phone and move completely new songs/videos onto it. 8gigs is enough.

thats true, didn't think of it in that regard. but the same is true of an ipod itself, but i still expect to be able to store a ton of my library on it. I think both of them will change in time, im in absolutely no rush to pick up one of these things anyway. apple seems to be really good at improving on a piece of hardware once they have developed it, no reason to believe this wouldn't be true of the iphone

But the technology is always evolving.. If you're going to wait for them to improve upon the iPhone and release a new version, why buy there? Surely they will improve upon it more and release an even newer and better version shortly after that? Might as well wait for that one.. And then after that I'm sure theres going to be an even better version, perhaps iPhone 2. Where does it stop? If you like the technology now and could use what it has to offer, buy it now; waiting it out for a better version is a logical fallacy and you really don't gain anything.

its true, the technology is always evolving which makes it difficult to stay the most cutting edge. but as a consumer, its for me to decide when i think new technology is at a point where im comfortable buying into it. its not about waiting for the best new one to come out, its about me waiting until a bottom line im comfortable with to make the investment. do i need a 10gig HD, and 12hr battery life? probably not, but if thats what it takes for an iphone to be worth $500 to me, thats my decision to wait on it, and thats fine with me. I'll use the ipod again as an example, once it came out, the 2nd and 3rd generation did not take too long to follow, by the 3rd gen it was worth it to me to buy one

buy it now; waiting it out for a better version is a logical fallacy and you really don't gain anything.
cant even afford it now, but if say 6 months from now the price drops say to say $350, then its an even better buy for me, since i could actually buy one.

If you cannot afford to spend another $250 then how are you going to afford the monthly service on this phone or any other smartphone? The iPhone will still be around when you have a good job and can afford the finer things. It is good that you are being patient on getting one.

Yeah, you can't afford an additional $150 or $250 but you can afford the $60-$120 monthly fees?

Also, for you to say that the 8gig iPhone with current battery life isn't worth $500, but a 10gig with 12 hour battery life is is just dumb. Consider the amount of utility you will get out of having an iPhone for 6 months (about the time it will take for a 10gig 12 hr battery to come out) as opposed to not having one. Surely that is worth the extra $100-$200 you're paying (for a smaller hard drive and such).

I'm really not a trendy person, I don't need the latest gadgets, I've never even owned an iPod or digital camera...

And, well, that's kinda why an iPhone appeals to me. Sure, sure, it's a digital camera, iPod and phone all in one, but how many people buying it don't already have at least an iPod? Probably very, very few. The $600 price tag is a ton easier to swallow considering it's not replacing something I already have, it's giving me new shit.

Plus my current phone is 3 years old.

The only thing that bugs me is the plans. $60/mo for 450 anytime minutes? I pay $50/mo for 600 anytime right now on my 3-year-old plan. Sure, sure, there's all the unlimited internet useage and shit, but for me a phone is first and foremost a phone. 450/mo doesn't quite cover it for me. and the next step up (900/mo) is $80.

So close, but the cheap plan just isn't quite enough, and the expensive plan is just a little too much for me...grrr.

hows it dumb, if im paying for it, its my decision to make when an iphone is worth it to me to get one. especially since currently my phone, and ipod are working perfectly fine, it would be dumb to needlessly replace them when they have a ways to go on their lifespan, of course adding in the fact that I dont have the $500 to drop. I wouldn't say I'd be getting any grand "utility" out of having one now, in theory, sure besides watching movies on the subway or in between classes, oops, wait, my ipod can do that already. and wtf are you bringing up service plans for? from the start I've always said "well if I had the money" cause its all hypothetical, cause I dont have the money, using the money to pay for the service plan to make a point is just asinine. are you working for apple or something, or just a royal fanboy and pissed that I'm not so blown away by the iphone that I'm (in theory) opting to wait?

Re: Odds: 20-1 Getting Trampled For iPhone

So my friend buys one. He takes it home, opens the box, and picks it up, and he turns it on. Then this thing suddenly starts scanning for Bluetooth devices in the vicinity. It finds his laptop. This laptop has a bunch of phone numbers and stuff on it. So his iPhone puts all these phone numbers into itself. So he calls me up telling me about this little thing and all the stuff it does without being told to do it.

Now, is this going to be like that South Park episode where Cartman has the Trapper Keeper that will destroy the world? Or is this just a super handy, neat machine?

Eh, either way I'm even more convinced that I wanna buy one at my next 2 year contract renewal.

And I just had a thought, in Europe their phones aren't region or company coded. Maybe you could just buy an iPhone in Europe and slam your SIM card into it regardless of your provider? I have no idea, really. I'm just thinking out loud.

Don't let it near bright light, don't let it get wet, and most importantly don't feed it after midnight.

You can't slam another phone's SIM card into it but I believe you can slam the iPhone's SIM card into another phone. This is helpful if you want to use your old phone as a modem for your laptop.

If you're an existing customer, especially with 3 years tenure with your company you can usually haggle them down on price or up on minutes for a plan.

They may try some BS but if you fight long and hard enough you can likely use your old plan, and maybe eat an extra 10-15 a month for a "Data" plan.

Missed out by about 10 persons, if only I got there like 30 minutes earlier. Was like 50 people in line an hour before opening and 70ish by the time they opened. It's like the Wii all over again.

Pretty sure my phone doesn't have much for email options, etc. The data stuff I'd like would require a new phone - although haggling my T-mobile plan down doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Maybe if the Vista extravaganza pans out in the other thread I'll splurge.

Do you have an Apple store near where you live? You might have better luck there since they hold more units in stock than AT&T stores.

If you PM me your city then I can tell you if that Apple store has stock and when they will be getting more stock if they are empty.

That's what I used but if wyrm works at apple it's probably more accurate. They can receive multiple shipments in a day and that link doesn't account for that, nor does would it tell you how many came in.

I can tell you with some confidence that almost all Apple stores are in stock. It's the Cingular/ATT stores that barely got any phones.

If that were the case, wouldn't the link you provided show most of the stores with a green dot? Maybe my colors are inverted but most of them seem to be red when flipping through and seeing which stores have them, and that includes stock they receive at night, I bet most will sell out through out the day tomorrow.
