    FFXI-PC + 360 (USB) Controllers

I recently installed FFXI for PC and downloaded the drivers that allow me to use my 360 controller on my PC. The only problem that I'm having is getting the Right and Left trigger buttons to register. They dont seem to come up when I congfigure my button layout... is there anyway that I can fix this?

Also, what controllers do you guys use to play FFXI on PC? If I cant fix the trigger problem with the 360 controller then I will probably look into buying another one... any tips?

i use a ps2 controller and a usb converter thing for the past 'almost' 4 years. I have had to replace the controller once due to wear but the ps2 to usb converter held up all this time.

I tried playing with a PS2 controller on my PC with a $10 Gamemon (I think is the company) multi-adapter I got at Wal-Mart. Plugs XBox, PS2, and Gamecube controllers in via USB.

I didn't see what the fuss was about, and promptly went back to using my keyboard.

Official 360 drivers from MS are shit.
What you want to do is find the 3rd party drivers (do a search on the forums). They will let you use the triggers and side buttons without any hassle.

This is what you need. Works perfectly on my PC once all the setup is complete in FFXI.

You play a mage job, right? I don't think I could play THF or BRD without a controller. Too much moving

You can move while you play on pc, unless you choose the compact setup. You can move/dowhateverthefuckyourdoing ALOT easier while typing with a keyboard. Macros are also a lot easier to use on keyboard, doesn't limit you up to R1,R2,L1,L2 (I think these are the only macros you can set on ffxi without having to open the macro window thing and selecting then hitting x.). I really couldnt see myself playing Ninja without a keyboard maybe easier melee jobs with people that don't use gear swap macros sure, but do you really want those people in your pt to begin with?

    Re: FFXI-PC + 360 (USB) Controllers

I like using controller for things where I'll be moving a lot- like playing BRD for example. For meriting on RDM, it's far easier to use a controller and a lot easier on my hands- I'm not constantly reaching all over the keyboard for macros.

The way you select macros on a controller is by holding a key- R1 or R2 on my setup- which relate to Ctrl and Alt, then scrolling along the list of macros on that line of the palette with the D-pad. It's actually just as fast as doing it with a keyboard, and you're less likely to make mistakes, I find. An added bonus is that it remembers the last spell you selected, so if you're casting the same spell several times in a row, you don't have to scroll to get to it.

Moving and typing is a lot easier with a keyboard, as are accessing the ability menu and stuff. I prefer the controller for repetitive things, though.

those who say keyboard is better are probably people who've been playing on keyboard since day 1 and thus got used to it. This game was originally built as a PS2 game, to be played with a controller.

I play both methods, my main on gamepad, my mule on keyboard, so I'm rather accustomed to both methods now, but I find gamepad is better, easier to maneuver, etc.

You forgot the part where Logitech gamepads are complete and utter shit.

Mice, keyboards, speakers, all good. I will never buy another gamepad from them so long as I live.

I started playing with a controller, then I tried a keyboard, and I've used that since.

Just wondering, can you sidestep (shift+movement), look around while dead or engaged (shift+arrows), target in reverse order (shift+tab/0), target yourself and party members (f1-6), target npcs (f8), and page through moghouse (ctrl+arrows) with a controller?

Sidestep using both left and right analog sticks together (movement + camera, respectively). Look around while dead or engaged with right analog stick. Targetting is with the directional pad (left to select targets to your left, right for right; used in conjuction with camera movement, it's more precise than tabbing around to me). For party and alliance members, up and down on the directional pad moves through the party/alliance list. And paging through mog safe/locker/storage/inventory is with the same button as macros (ctrl or alt = L2/R2 on PS2 pad) plus up or down.

So yeah, pretty much all the functionality of a keyboard is available with controller. But in any case, it's just a personal preference. Some people find it easier to use a controller, and others a keyboard. Saying one is better than the other is just stupid. When I first started playing, I was working as a transcriptionist so I was typing 8 hours a day and coming home to play FF11 on a keyboard for the rest of the night. It was murder on my wrists, so I switched to a controller and really liked it. Have been using one for the past three-and-a-half years now.

While I normally would agree, the PS2 controller is actually good. Minus the D-Pad (sucks with fighting games) which is why I don't use it for anything else except FFXI.

Best way ever, control itself is just amazing for FFXI.
Does it have any latency lag at all? Where it seems to take longer than normal to register button/movements compared to a keyboard or wired controller? I've always been weary of wireless.

Or just buy this and you don't have to worry about the adapter...

Those numbers aren't right if your using lithium batteries. I've had the same 2 AA's in this controller for over 2 months now, and I play about 8hours/day with it. On another note, the test they did was done with stoneage alkaline.
