Yeah, 1up says the N64 games in particular almost always look superior to the original game.

I am guessing late November/early December since Brawl comes out on Dec 3. And this month Metroid and Super Metroid are coming out to commemorate MP3. So I'd say look out for it then.

Re: Official Virtual Console Thread (8/20/07)

I downloaded the first metroid and tried to play that through, and I must say, either that game was just poorly designed or I suck that that particular metroid cause I couldn't get anywhere. Samus only shoots like 4 inches in front of his face.

    And Yes for super metroid!

I realized yesterday when I downloaded the metroid 3 preview thing on the wii...that I never played metroid prime 2....I feel ashamed and wanna go plug in my gamecube and buy it.

    her face* lol

Yea Metroid is very flawed, that is why I didn't buy it. I've tried it on emus multiple times and it is just incredibly frustrating. I'd recommend Metroid: Zero Mission for the GBA which is a remake of the first one. Very good and very fun.

I've been playing through Metroid Prime again too to get myself psyched for 3 :D

Re: Official Virtual Console Thread (8/20/07)

Heh, the original Metroid wasn't flawed, it was just extremely challenging without save states, or without mapping out the areas by hand (or photo-graphically remembering them, as there are a lot of dupe areas later on to confuse you), especially with some of its more obscure secret areas.
(especially the suits, I have no fricken' clue how the hell I found those as a kid when I played it to death on my NES years ago)

The shooting issue is alleviated later when you get an upgraded beam weapon which shoots to the edge of the screen, you just have to tough it out until you find it. The original Metroid to me was one of those "you had to have played it back then" titles to appreciate its value, I mean, for me, it was the first title I played on the NES that had backtracking, and NAVIGATING THE SCREEN TO THE LEFT, OMGZ! *ahem*. Yeah, it doesn't quite withstand the test of time, but hell, it (and its GB sequel) built the foundation for the ultimate title, Super Metroid.

Regarding Zero Mission, it was way too short and easy for me (and I mean on the first playthrough, not a speed run), I blame the mini-map and adjusted difficulty, even though it was still fairly enjoyable all throughout.

Currently blasting through Super Metroid while challenging myself to do it with the least amount of upgrades as possible.
(no high-jump boots {go go wall jump!}, no grappling, no gravity suit, going to see if it's possible or not for myself)

It is possible, I know that much, just very difficult I'm sure. I think the lowest percentage it is possible to beat it on is 15%, so good luck .

Check metroid2002.com, they have all the tips, strategies for "sequence breaking" as it is called at how to skip items, bosses, etc.

Re: Official Virtual Console Thread (8/20/07)

I never really tinkered with super metroid, i just played the game completely. But for metroid prime, the first one, I learned a lot of really cool tricks to skip parts or get things early, mostly from just watching the speeddemo guy that beat it in an hour and 10 minutes.

Get the double jump boots right when you land, jumping on wall's and stuff that just have little ledges that normally you wouldn't see, rolling in a ball and bomb jumping through that place with the silver bars that block you. Stuff like that. I think during my lunch i'm gonna go buy metroid prime 2...i don't know why I never did.

    Got I hate Maridia.

All the times I've played Super Metroid and I can never find my way around this damn area.

Only part of the game I don't like.

Edit - Yay just finished the game! 7 hours, 62% items.

Thought i'd post this. It's pretty funny, and you can see some video from the game before you buy them.

    http://www.gamevideos.com/video/channel ... %20singdom

It's the GameJew Singing songs about each virtual console game when they come out. He's done 2 sets of games so far.

(The two videos are on the left)

Yes, it was one of the best great sequels to a good game ever...

Now if I can remember the proper soul-combining methods to remake my team of awesome...

For the record, I did like BoF 3 a tad more, but only because of the dragon gene system.
