Their goal was most likely to resemble art from the middle ages in Europe, which lacks perspective and depth.

I kinda like this thing, cuz it makes another mention of the Far East and its relationship with the Empire. In the COP Mission "Fire in the Eyes of Men" (iirc), the Ninja herald that met with Tenzen made mention of a River. The river in this bit of folklore may be the one they're talking about. It would explain why there's still a stalemate despite their war having lasted so long.

Hmmm, maybe. I remember that scene... the river was the Rakutei (or was it Hakutei? I want to say Rakutei.) The encroaching Emptiness had caused it to dry up, which meant there was no barrier against bandit incursions. Not sure if that's related to the Near East/Far East conflict, though.
