Yeah, intro to SO2 is retardedly long, you won't get to fight proper battles for a good while.

To be fair, it IS an RPG. So you have to expect sections (long and short) with story/dialogue. Most RPGs don't let you get to the meat of the battle system for around that long anyway, so it's not a big deal. The only time the intro becomes annoying is when you're replaying it (which I have, loads of times), otherwise it's a good intro.
I dunno, there's plenty of games where you get to get to actually feel like you're playing a game sooner than SO2.
...unfortunately SO3 isn't one of them (unless you cutscene skip [FUCK YEAH]) , SO4 probably won't be either.
New gameinformer came in today and they gave star ocean 4 a 7. Scanner doesn't work so I'll quote the short stuff
AndConcept A prequel story that details mankind's departure from Earth
Graphics Sharp texturing and colorful worlds sadly set the stage for a choppy animations
Sound Decent voice work is joined by a highly cliched and fairly imitating score.
Playability Combat is easy to handle and loaded with depth. Field movement is far too sensitive, which causes problems in tight areas.
Entertainment It never quite reaches Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, but this is a nice addition to the series.
Replay Value Moderate
Three hours. This is the approximate amount of time that Star Ocean: the Last Hope nuzzles players under the smelly armpit of protagonist Edge Maverick.
This is incredibly vague. It doesn't sound like the kind review I would use to get an idea if the game will be fun or not.
[edit]
Cliche "sound"? What the fuck is that? It's is the first time I see the word "cliche" to describe a soundtrack.
And "choppy animation"..I mean come on. It's not a 6 hours action game.
What's that supposed to mean? Is that the intro length or something?
I know he just took exerpts, but that's seriously one of the worst, most vague reviews I've ever seen. My guess is the guy didn't even play it.
No no no that isn't the full review I just took the upper right part of the review where they give little tldrs for each review. But there are some parts in the review you show he didn't like it that well
Star Ocean: The Last Hope. What Can You Expect Come Launch?
I know it's not the whole thing, but this kind of review doesn't help me much. Althought, he does admit near the beginning he didn't play enough to judge the game.
[edit]
Didnt quote the right review, nvm

So pretty. The world is definitively going to be fun to explore.
I've seen people complain about them getting rid of the anime faces but seriously, look at the style of the game itself. Anime portraits just don't lend themselves well to that kind of style.
btw I heard there's a catgirl in that game. God damnit.
Want some actual mainstream American success? Cut it out with the catgirls Japan.
big-titty-elf-mages can stay though, right?
Better than damned catgirls.
The official bonus video from the main site where the girl explained the otaku culture to edge and the robot was fucking hilarious
What video is that? Doesn't sound like any I've seen...
And replace them with what? This?

I seriously doubt many people stay away from this game because of the anime look. Rpg here aren't mainstream because the mainstream doesn't like story heavy game.
The fellpool said you can fuck right off.
Also, need nico account, but http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm6064522
Kinda agree, >.> People didn't all stay away from Xenogears/saga, Final Fantasy Games, and what not.. and they were story heavy, especially the former. Granted I wasn't a fan of Xenosaga, but I fucking loved Xenogears. Pretty sure it did decently, no?
I forgot people buy FF games for the characters, and not because of the tradition around those games. I mean, everyone love their design, right? Tidus, Vaan..etc?
Star ocean's 1.5 millions versus FFXII's 4.5m isn't that bad. It's actually better than every other rpg I can think of. You would just piss off the fan of the series if you changed the style, and casual gamers wouldn't buy it more because they don't buy story driven RPG.
And Mass Effect had meathead, and more publicity than any other games on TV.
