Maybe its psychological, but I know for a fact since I started taking medicine for the depression I have been better able to bring myself out of it.

I think it just way too subjective, what you call depression, I may call the "blues" (as you referred to it). It really boils down imo to overmedication from a very earlier age.

I understand your point, but it has NOTHING to do with the OP's situation. Since this is an anonymous message board and there's no way of proving him wrong, just assume he has real, clinical depression and go with it. If you can't do that then don't post.

    Re: Antidepressants

Effexor - I have been on this drug the longest. I still felt depressed at times but I also had moments of happiness while taking this drug. I was heavily addicted to FF during my time on this drug but I also felt more motivated to do things. I am thinking about getting back on this drug.
I was on that for a couple years, then I kept getting more and more suicidal thoughts from it, so I had to stop taking them as it was affecting my mental state. ;/

I think I was on Zyprexa for a bit, can't recall though so I won't comment on it.

Regardless, I'm pretty much taking nothing these days, I find myself more happy being pessimistic (the way I usually am) and living my days normally rather than taking a pill everyday of my life and hoping things will get better.

Chemical imbalance is not subjective. It is empirical fact. A flaw of personality is only a small portion of the problems someone suffering from real depression has. Yes people are overmedicated, but what basis you have to make a diagnosis over the internet for someone you don't know eludes me. It's a serious question, it is a legitimate question, medication is an option and should be an option. If people actually benefitted from a "JUST STOP IT" form of therapy, psychology would be a dead science.

    Re: Antidepressants

I've never been diagnosed with chronic depression but I've definitely had my down time. I bounce back from feeling crappy pretty fast by trying a new hobby, or working on a personal goal. It's pretty fulfilling to set standards for yourself and actually do it. Nothing can really keep you down when you make accomplishments :D

Oddly enough, I felt the exact same way while I was on Lexapro. I was feeling good, I guess you could say, but it wasn't really fulfilling or meaningful.

    Okay, simple solution.

    Smoke weed.

    I'm 1 happy fellow. Wasn't always happy, now I'm a nice guy.

Just don't go doing other shit.

And you think its ok for someone that seems to have tried 10+ types of medication for this, then comes to a message board of other young adults seeking advice shouldn't be questioned?

He wanted personal decisions on what drug to take, I am simply stating I believe that not taking drugs is your best option.

i've been taking st. john's wort for more than a year and a half now, and it works for me. it helps me just let go of those kinds of feelings more easily, and rejoin whatever it was i was doing prior to the 'onset' of those feelings. also~ i began to really feel things again. the first thing i noticed was how good it felt to laugh, then how nice it felt to touch my cheek to a pillow. i dont feel 'unnaturally' happy or anything, i just feel more like myself, having an easier time

Maybe he was joking, if not, poor bastard. "You'd be lucky if you function 'normally' after 2-3 tries." That's coming from a doctor specialist in drug addiction. That drug can fck up your brain permanently with very little, as little as one dose. Ecstasy is no joke.

Some depression is actually caused by chemical imbalances in your brain due to many factors. Pills help to maintain the balance. Certainly depression is a cycle for some people, for others it's a chronic thing. Just because you dont believe in and think it's some "emo bullshit" doesnt mean it's not real. I simply love how simplistic and stubborn people like you are.

As for medicine. Right now im talking St. Johns Wort. Its an over the counter drug my mother, a nurse and my therapist suggest before being put on anything with hardcore side effects. They wanted to see if this worked but it's not. Ive been diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety as of 2 weeks ago.

    exercise did wonders for me

I got one of those little mini bikes for under your desk. Never took any meds, just told myself one day that I was done being fucking sad all the time. Went out and did stuff to change my life. Lost 30 lbs and started feeling great, started doing more stuff with my friends and pulled myself out of it. If you need a reccomendation for a mini bike get this one: http://www.amazon.com/GameCycles-MAG-TN ... 936&sr=1-1

has worked for me for 3 years now, hope you get better.

And to anyone who says depression isn't real, go fuck yourself.
