I have lost a grandpa to surgery and when I was kid I kept getting told be ready to be cut open for heart surgery(runs in family and yes that is some fucked up shit to tell a kid >_<) So of course I'm fucking scared of going to get surgery. Surgery is the only way to repair a problem like you described as far as I know. You can probably get an anesthesiologist to knock you out before you did a surgery and you wouldn't feel anything, surgery with modern medicine is really no big deal.

Even my back surgery wasn't life threatening. There was, however, the chance of getting paralyzed and any good doctor would tell you that (especially to keep their asses covered, but if you're safe with your choice of doctor like I was then you have nothing to worry about.)

If you go there, (any kind of certified doctor etc) they will be able to properly diagnose and fix the problem, whether it be with or without surgery.
They aren't going to be like.. "Oh, well we realized after operating on you that it was just xxxx"
