You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I feel compelled to respond. Except this time I decided to do so in a roundabout way. Bottom line is that dissent and responsible citizenship (i.e. keeping yourself informed and not choosing to see everything in red, white, and blue) are a hell of a lot more patriotic than flag-waving.

While I agree with you that you need to be kept informed and not be brainwashed, at the same time I also think osme people take everything wayyyy to far. It's really not that serious to have a reason to get with friends for barbeque and fireworks is it?

Just enjoy the day and forget about the political bullshit for once.

oh I'm all for barbecue and fireworks, but when someone is bashed for posting a thoughtful quote by an American thinker/historian/WWII veteran, I think that's taking it too far.

These ways of thinking -- cultivated, nurtured, indoctrinated from childhood on -- have been useful to those in power, and deadly for those out of power.

National spirit can be benign in a country that is small and lacking both in military power and a hunger for expansion (Switzerland, Norway, Costa Rica and many more). But in a nation like ours -- huge, possessing thousands of weapons of mass destruction -- what might have been harmless pride becomes an arrogant nationalism dangerous to others and to ourselves.

Amen to that, joft. It's too bad ignorant fucks like your first responder here can't tell the difference between a bit of wisdom regarding nationalism and what anti-American is. And the irony in his response and what he thinks, and anyone else that has an "unpopular" opinion being considering un-American kills me.

Hey D11, it was 4 sentences and a paragraph, I'm hoping for your sake you didn't really read anything remotely anti-American in there before your fingers started crying that post of yours out. Maybe you're just having a bad day?

Anyways, Happy 4th everyone - I hope you celebrate the idea this country was founded on and not the symbols or words of its politicians. Maybe some of you crybabies will catch a clue with all the flashing lights going on tonight, too.

I'm surprised after reading your other posts no one was caught off guard by what you said and caught the sarcasm. People instantly fired the goatse cannons all up in the biz. But in their defense internet sarcasm detectors malfunction often

But ya, Jofts post was something very important for everyone to consider. Don't get wrapped up in symbolism and words thinking you're a patriot and it gives you the right to criticize someone else's patriotism. People who do that are the rapists of democracy.

Re: I'm not American, but I do live here.

I really see why people hate us with morons blatantly making outbursts like that, people tend to misconstrue us good people with those pricks, but I love America. I wouldn't rather live anywhere else. I see my stupid weeaboo friends trying desperately to get to Japan by entering the Navy or even becoming English teachers and it's like wtf.. you realize it's a completely different place and culture. It's not all video games/anime, I know it's going to hit them hard when they realize it. I would get homesick. I love our sense of humor, our movies, our FPS's!, our history, the fact that I can walk down the street and see a hot dog stand, a Mexican restaurant, a Lebanese restaurant, and an Italian restaurant on the same fucking block.

With that being said... Happy 4th everyone. Go blow shit up.

I'm currently watching the King of the Hill show and that has made this thread even more hilarious.

I live on the shore in an expensive area, everyone has boats, it's just the thing to do. Plus the fireworks they do over the ocean and on the beaches are better from the boats.
