    Re: Hard drive choice

Assuming you spent the $5 to put a fan in the front of your case to blow directly on your drive, the chance of facing a drive failure in the first year or two of any of the models out now are pretty freaking low. (As density goes up all drives fail eventually due to magnetic spread.)

Most drive failures are caused by overheating.

Performance on all drives are disappointing, so i'll say it again.. purchasing any single drive with performance in mind is stupid.

Buy one drive for $200.. raid0 two drives for $100 each and the raid will win every single time when it comes to performance.

It's 109.99 with the same warranty etc..

spend the extra few bucks and get this instead, It's much much better than maxtor. especially for the extra 20 bucks, you get much better quality. I used to run a maxtor and it's not exactly a great performance HDD and is kinda loud.
few extra bucks lol it costs almost 25% more, then again i wouldn't pay $90 for a hd anyway
this is like that sonic commercial where the guy say's "keep the change" and it's only a penny. Percents aren't an accurate depiction of cost. Something that is 4 dollars is like 25% more than something that's 3 dollars, doesn't mean that is a huge increase.

I have a seagate 320gb 7200.10rpm 16mb cache that works great. I wasn't aware that it was the same company or whatever as maxtor. My last hDD was a maxtor 80gb 5400 rpm 8mb cache that gave me a lot of trouble. I wish I had bought the samsung spinpoint this time, but I was in a rush to get the HDD since my other PC stuff came in and the seagate was the best thing at best buy, albeit way overpriced i'm sure.
pennies and the difference between 3 and 4 dollars is not $20, $20 more from $90 is both significant $-wise and %-wise
20 dollars isn't exactly breaking the bank either is my point. I'd happily pay an extra 20 bucks to get something that'll perform better, especially when it comes to my computer. For your money the spinpoint is a better price/performance HDD. Anyway, i'm just suggesting. If you have the extra 20 bucks, you're much better off with a samsung spinpoint, if you don't have it or are just frugle anyway and don't care what you get as long as it's less expensive, the seagate or whatever that's 20 bucks cheaper is good too.
lol you make it seem like seagates are bad and samsungs are good. Its marketing and the techie hype du jour, you can't judge new model hard drives' reliability until a few years out anyway (unless they fail very early, which they don't). I guess it all comes down to personal preference and that is a very good drive, but choices like these are why you buy a system for $800 and I buy a system for $400 that performs within 5% of yours.[/quote:dfc4c]

Funny you say that seeing as I have a seagate and have said in this thread that it works great and i'm completely happy with it. You can say what you want about whichever HDD you prefer as will I and anyone else. I'm not just pulling this preference out of thin air. Go to any computer forum you want to and ask which HDD performs better and i gaurantee you the top answer you'll get is the samsung spinpoint. If you don't mind spending the extra few bucks that is the best HDD to get. But, as i've said a seagate is also a good HDD and you're not going to be unhappy with one if you go with that.

You can get anything you want less expensive and have it perform near wht something else does. You can get a corvette for 40 grand that'll perform close to a 200 thousand dollar ferrari, that doesn't mean the ferrari isn't as good as it is.

First off. You should do some fucking research before you post. These are the specifications from Newegg on the Western Digital Raptor and the Samsung Spinpoint T Series.

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...spinpoint1.jpg

As you can see the average seek time and average latency for the Raptor are nearly half that of the Spinpoint.

If you don't trust Newegg, here are the specs from the manufacturer's sites respectively.

    Moving on.

I don't know what fucking planet you are living on but a base model Vette will never land itself in the same performance bracket as Ferrari Fiorano. The only thing the Vette has going for it is that it weighs 500 lbs less, but the Ferarri compensates for having another 220 horsepower. Also, who the FUCK buys a Ferrari and decides to hit the track. They are status symbols like Rolexes. If you wanted to build an car that will run 9's you would buy a car THATS MEANT TO BE RACED. People buy Ferrari's to be noticed, not to dust tuners. ProTip: Don't believe everything you see in Fast and the Furious.

In the end, the only thing the Spinpoint T has going for it is its 3.0 GB/s transfer rate which IS superior to the Raptor's 1.5 GB/s. However, unless you are on an OC3 backbone and can download files at 3.0 GB/s or you do a lot of transferring between hard drives, I highly doubt you will ever notice the difference.

all I gotta say is wow. First off, I never said the raptor wasn't a good HDD. The spinpoint is over a 120 dollars less expensive for something with the same cache, MORE HDD space and is only 2800 rpms slower AND a better sata transfer rate. Your seek time while faster isn't going to be that much noticably faster, especially not for how much louder the raptors are, harder to cool and more expensive by a lot.

And who the fuck specified what exact cars, did you even read what i typed?. I never said base model vette and i never said a ferrari fiorano so shut the fuck up. Who the fuck said anything about taking it to the track and trying to get something that'll run a 9 or whatever the fuck you're talking about. I was making a fucking cost comparison vs. performance something you clearly don't understand since you're throwing the raptor up there which has 2800 more rpms for over 120 dollars more you stupid ass. I don't give a shit about god damned cars, I was making an example and YES you can find corvettes that can perform on par with ferrari's if you're not picking base model vettes and sup'd up ferrari's like a homo. I don't even fucking like corvettes, go with a dodge viper or something like that, a shelby GT 500 for 60-70 thousand could perform on par with a ferrari. And i still didn't say they were better, i said for the cost they can perform near to what a ferrari can and that the ferrari's are still better.

And try to keep this about freaking helping people make their choices, if you think something is a better suggestion then suggest it and move on. Don't bring in this ignorant bullshit to what should be a helpful forum.

Go eat some pancakes laced with arsnik you fucking waste of life.

I'm not denying that it's got faster rpms. Can you really tell the difference between 4.2ms and 8.7ms? Is that worth 120 bucks to you? Add in the fact that it's much louder under load. And personally I don't like it. I NEVER said it's not a good HDD.

    Re: Hard drive choice

So I didn't get the price on the vette right, big deal. As I said I don't even like vettes, I was going for a sports car and that was the first one that came to mind. My point is still valid. A 70-80k corvette will still perform near to what a 200k ferrari will.

With a ferrari, how often do you go 200 mph and go 0-60 in 2-3 seconds? probably not much you're going to drive normal speeds 98% of the time, the ferrari is for bragging rights. A less expensive fast car can do just the same thing 98% of the time.

What are you gonna get with a raptor that has 30% speed increase? You're going to save a couple seconds every now and then in a case where you've got a lot of transferring/loading/reading etc... going on. But in real world cases you're not going to be utilizing that extra speed increase 100% of the time. So if you save an extra 30 seconds loading windows, or a couple seconds loading or streaming video or what-ever, congratulations you've got 5-60 seconds of extra time to spend living your life for the 2-4x more you paid for your raptor. If you wanna get that HDD with a whitebox go ahead and spend the extra money and get your speed increase in the few cases where you can actually utilize it.

If you want to get the HDD with the best costerformance ratio go with a spinpoint as it's much cheaper and for normal real world situations offers you just as much performance with less noise as the raptor.

And again, i've never said a raptor is a bad HDD, just not worth the load of money extra it costs for the small speed increase that you dont' even utilize all the time. This is my opinion and that of a lot of other people.

And a whole bunch of other people couldn't give two hoots about a slightly louder drive, and will go for performance.

    Re: Hard drive choice

at 2-4x the price, be my guest. Still doesn't change anything i've said. if money is no object fine get the faster one. If you're on some kind of buget take that extra 100-150 bucks you saved on the HDD and get a better motherboard/ram/gpu/cpu things that will affect your performance more often than the HDD rpms.

Like i've said, if you're going costerformance the spinpoint is better, if you're just going for performance then yes the raptor is better.

lol that got ugly fast, way to keep it civil haha

i really have no more to add since I have explained my points, and respect the other viewpoints expressed here, and I felt I rebut them sufficiently for OP to make his informed decision regarding his HD purchase. You guys made your case for what you think is the best course of action. Also comparing HDs to cars is a very poor comparison, and the vette/ferrari analogy is a strawman argument. all the options are fine depending if you want a faster hd or if you wanna save some bucks. no need to get so heated

    lol ok...so...

I might do a raid setup. Is the performance increase noticeable?

    Re: Hard drive choice

You'll notice an increase in performance for some things but not everything.

This thread goes into pretty good detail on raid 0 vs. raptor vs. 7200 HDD setups.

    http://www.buildyourown.org.uk/forums/t ... rms=raptor

The OP links some good articles on pros and cons and there's a pretty good debate between a bunch of people who are more experienced with both sides. I linked this website/forum in another thread, it's really good for information about PC's and as the website suggests building your own.
