    Dell Optiplex GX110 Processor Upgrade

I got an old Dell like in the topic from my school for finishing my CCNA classes, and I'm looking for a new processor. I've already screwed up ordering a Socket 478, and checking today with a friend, my socket is actually a PGA370, does anyone know of a good processor that would fit into it? Currently running a 864mhz Pentium III processor, was hoping for something good enough to start running CS:S.

From the brief search I just did, it'll only support a PIII chip, so the most you'll get on there is 1ghz or so.

It's a fucking ancient machine in terms of PC's, your best bet is to build a new machine and use the Dell as a file server/firewall, learn Linux on it or something.

Well I'm shopping around on Newegg for a motherboard and processor combo, but I'm gonna have to get a new case to put it all in cause these Optiplex's are fuckin giant. I got about $117, and I'm pretty much lost at what I'm looking for, aside from which board fits in which case.

DO NOT USE THE POWER SUPPLY IN THE GX110!

Dell crosswires the power supplies inside their towers from ATX standards. If you try to use the power supply with a non-Dell mobo, you've just made a very expensive paperweight for your desk.

Seriously, don't even bother trying to upgrade it or even use any of the parts from it. It's a relic, and not the sexy Aegis kind.

Save your $117 until you can build a whole machine. If you try to use parts that are 6-7+ years old in a new box it'll be a bad decision.

Don't toss it though, it'll do just fine for word processing, surfing, music and the like, you just won't get any serious gaming done on it.

save your money until you have 700-800$ (if you have a monitor and keyboard/mouse you can reuse) or 900-1000$ (if you want/need a new monitor/peripherals) and build a new machine then. don't reuse any internals to that dell, don't reuse that dell case. - in fact, don't reuse anything in the tower period except maybe the ethernet card or soundblaster if you added one yourself.

there's another thread around here where we discuss the kind of budget you'll need to build a new pc and recommend some theoretical builds. go check it out to get an idea of what a new 'budget' pc takes.

combining ancient parts with modern components is a recipe for disaster, especially when those ancient parts are Dell. (the mobo's and PSU's aren't typically ATX standard; esp. in the time period your pc is from.)
