I have such mixed feelings.

I thought a lot of it was very well done. The scenes in the underground place with the train tracks were both frightening and funny (the thing about homeless guys on fire... lmao); the emotional parts - well, part - was very well done (on the phone with his mom, Hud wondering what to do for him, etc.) and overall I think the action and drama was well-balanced and as realistic as someone could imagine it.

However as far as a movie goes it had a lot missing. I was not satisfied, I'll put it that way; if you're going to make a monster movie you need a solid scene of the guy wrecking shit. While much shit was wrecked, there was no single scene in which I could clearly view the monster in his entirety destroying things. The best shot you got was either in the helicopter looking down (in which rubble & buildings obstructed clear view) or the scene of Hud's death. In terms of sheer badassery with monster mayhem, it was a little lacking.

God damn, I mean, every god damn monster movie has stealth jets dropping bombs and tanks blasting shells and artillery men shooting round after worthless round into the thing's side. While it was amusing the first time or two, I got sick of the American military/government's role in this movie very quickly. Marlene (sp?)'s death scene was awesome, and the whole discovery of the 4 civilians in an unexpected store was kind of cool, but other than that I feel like a lot more could have been done. MAINLY, I was bothered by the fact that we were told the government would destroy Manhattan if their next attack didn't succeed, and for all we know that never happened. If I was to take the end as that occurence they could have made it a lot more obvious and badass. Otherwise, wtf? Stupid way to end a movie, I don't care how realistic it was. Case in point: the cameraman, whoever it was at varying parts of the movie, made very bad decisions.

The problem with the movie I think was the fundamental concept behind it. They wanted to make a unique monster thriller movie from the point of view of a small group of people simply trying to survive. I didn't need to see a fucking SWAT team take the thing down, but God damn, if you're going to give it a twist at least end it the right fucking way, give me something to work with.

Beth was fucking that other dude, she didn't love Rob. Stupid love story is stupid. She would have died realistically and never had called him.

I'm telling you, even if it's cliche, this movie should have had the main characters trying to kill the damn thing in severely unconventional manners. You could have kept the majority of the good scenes in the film intact while actually pleasing the fucking audience.

Give me my $10 and months of anticipation back, please.

How would you like him to show the monster destroying shit in all its glory? Run over to it and start filming, hoping he or the falling debris don't crush you? Also, exactly what unconvential means are 4 random 20-somethings going to use to kill that monster which withstands missiles? And even though I really don't care about the love story... Beth and Rob were best friends, they did that little fling in the beginning, and he didnt call her for the next month. Whether she loved him or not, they were best friends. She would have called him if she was in trouble.

People need to open your eyes and realize not every movie needs to be exactly the same. You're boring as fuck.

Saw it last night, and man, I have no idea what everyone else is talking about. I went to go see it as a fresh, new bigthingattackscity movie, and NOT compare it to traditional movies of the same general plot. You know, walking in open minded. For what it was supposed to be, it was amazing.

The special effects, as mentioned before, were unreal... not once did I think I was watching some computer-created scene. That one subway tunnel scene was... damn. I'm NEVER WALKING IN AN UNLIT TUNNEL EVER AGAIN. The acting was a tad unmemorable, but I'm not really sure what you can do when you're running/screaming the entire time, so I'm not going to hold that against them. The intensity was absolutely off-the-charts, though. When it comes to action-thrillers I'm usually pretty mellow, except for a couple scenes here and there with heightened action, but Jesus, I'm now trying to think of scenes that DIDN'T have me going OHSHITOHSHITOHSHITOHSHITOHSHIT.

In regards to the camerawork, I think this movie would've FAILED if it was shot with the traditional cinematic camera... it would've plunked the movie right in there with all the other shit that has the same premise. Hell, the handcam-feel to it was the defining factor to it's uniqueness and overall effectiveness in regards to that "fresh take" they were aiming for. And I just want to say how glad I am that they didn't survive. If they had lived through that, my God I would've killed someone myself to make up for it. Kudos to them for the un-Cinderella ending.

I need to get the torrent now to see that last scene that everyone's talking about. By that point my eyes/senses/general focus were so worn that I just took what she said for . Also, for the people who didn't think of it, I stayed until after the credits to see if there was anything they slid in (with a movie advertised the way it was, I thought there was going to be for sure), but apart from a garbled transmission, there was nothing. If the garbled thing was really supposed to mean something, we'll see some freaks decode it in the next few days.

I have a feeling that the movie is only part of what's going on. There's still websites being updated as part of the "viral" campaign, and things like the youtube clips. I'm thinking that in order to get the whole story, you're going to have to pay attention to a lot of the sites. I mean, there was at least 2 different sites for this.

Each of the characters had a myspace page that was actually updated with blogs, comments were responded to, etc. A bunch of clips were released onto youtube and stuff about the sponsoring company of Slusho (Tagruato) having an oil rig explode for no reason.

1) the girl passed out on the couch is jamie lascano (jamieandteddy.com) whose boyfriend was in an eco-terrorist group that attacked the drilling station that woke up the beasty. he recently sent her a sample of the main secret ingredient in Slusho (which tagruato, the oil corporation, also develops), she ate it, and has been fucked up out of her mind since...

2) rob was leaving for japan to go and work for slusho. they sent him some complimentary t-shirts and stuff and he was wearing one in the movie.

3) the monster was scratching its back on a building to clean the parasites off of it...i thought they just jumped off when i first saw it.

4) in the final scene (although a month previous to the attack,) when rob and beth are on their date at coney island, he pans the camera over to the water and you can see something fall into it...

5) after the credits you can hear some whispering. it is "it's still alive." backwards...and it sounds like rob's voice...

Just got back from the movie overall it was a great movie of pple surviving the monster attack the only bad point of the movie is that it's a little too short imo.

What I don't understand was what happened to the girl who got bitten by one of those parasites in the subway? Did she explode in the tent when she was pulled off by the army pple?

So mad that I missed something dropping into the water the last scene.

Overall, I enjoyed it. The camera did make me a bit woozy toward the end just from watching it so long, but a minor setback. The characters were very believable. Anybody that has been drunk and in a serious situation can relate to Hud. He tries to sober up and be serious (When he can't think of something to say to Rob in the subway) and other times you can just tell he is still drunk (Wouldn't it be funny if a flaming homeless guy came out of nowhere?). Definitely something I could relate too, making the characters that much better.

But something I am confused/upset about...

All the viral websites and tie-ins had something to do with underwater whatever, whether it was drilling for oil or harvesting the Slusho ingredients, it seemed like they were pissing off something that had been there for ages. But at the end, you see something drop in the water only a MONTH before the attack. Did that thing grow to THAT size, swim all the way to Japan, destroy the oil rig, then swim back to New York City to raise hell in one months time? I'm not sure what to believe, did it come from space or was it in a deep sleep at the bottom of the sea? All the viral websites had almost everyone believing it had been living in the sea for years. I'm not trying to discredit the movie, I just want some answers on that ><

Also, I'm not sure why the voice after the credits had to be Rob's voice (People are saying it sounds like Rob), it was pretty clear Rob was dead at that point. Should have been a US army guy or something.

Just for the sake of knowing because I love the concept here, I want to know the background of the monster, where did it come from, how do you kill it, how DID we kill it, what happened to it after we leveled the city, etc.

From what I understand, that thing falling into the water at the end was a satellite from one of the companies. (Taraguto or something from one of the viral tie ins had lost one of their satellites in the ocean- the site isn't working for me at the moment so I can't double check or anything.) A combination of that and the drilling in the ocean was what woke the monster up.

Not saying this as fact, but from reading around this is the most plausible sounding theory I've read thus far. There was a post about it on ONTD and that's what everyone on there was saying. Waiting to see if someone hopefully posts some sources though.

I totally missed the last scene, I was too fixated on seeing if they would kiss or something. Was the object that fell a large one? Could you make out any characteristics? That does sound like a good theory though.
