Woflenstein: ET fps problem

Yes, old game etc. I know I'm not the only one who plays or has played it, or at least dealt with punkbuster games.

Problem is, the first like 5-10mins of EVERY match I get horrible fps (5-10 range). After that though, it runs great (30-50 range, low, but very playable). I can already foresee "get a new comp." comments. I am, I would like to know why it does this though. Is it a punkbuster problem? I've tried turning off firewalls, forwarding ports, defragmenting, virus scan, reinstalling punkbuster and ET, all the basic stuff. The only server I play on, I ping around 40-60 in game.

Keep in mind, I can use this comp to do Dynamis with 8-15 fps. I know somebody who barely even gets any better then that with a processor 3x's the speed as mine. I use 800x600 res, 512x512 background res, no sound etc. The rest is for performance not quality. I've even used this comp to play Prince of Persia Two Thrones, I beat it 3 times.

As for my computer specs, I don't really like saying cause it sucks...but I know I wont get help without it...

RAM: 256MB
Video Card: 125MB Radeon 9250
Windows XP Pro
Interwebs: 3mb down/300 something up
anything else that matters for this particular game?

Recommended specs for the game is:
600 MHz CPU, 128 MB RAM, 32 MB OpenGL graphics card, 56.6k Modem/LAN

What OS are you running?

If it's XP, add about another 256 MB of ram. XP doesn't perform well till about 512 megs, and doesn't shine till 1GB+

It depends on what you are asking. I downloaded ET like a week ago, so I can't tell you if it has "always" been this way.

It isn't like I get 10fps the whole game, just those 5-10mins. I don't see why XP would cause ET to go slow only when you connect to a server for the first 5-10min and then return to normal. If you was trying to say downgrade to 2000, uh, no. I run other games with specs way above what my comp can do and with great fps, I don't see why 1 game would be so different. Specially when the actual minimum requirements are like 400mhz cpu, 64mb ram, and 16mb video card.

I only posted the recommended just to show that I wasn't trying to play something out of my league.

your cpu is terrible. Hell, I have a 1ghz p3 socket 370 I could throw your way if you pay for shipping lol.

Still want to know what causes it to go slow for the first 5-10mins then pick up, is it just the CPU doing that? I was under the impression it was punkbuster, but I cant even join a non-punkbuster server with punkbuster disabled so I can't test that theory. I always get some banned message, even though I've never played on the server.

Processor honestly isn't going to help that much. The issue is classic lag from not enough ram. <shrug> buy a stick of 256, it's cheap and can only help the situation.

a p3 over a celeron will most def help.
