the 80gb is confirmed to not have the emotion engine(ps2 chip), so it will emulate ps2 games, much like the 360 does to xbox games, meaning it isnt 100% compatible.

To some the chips seem to be the deciding factor for a PS3 (which is weird)

Most Sony will do is remove the chips, lower the cost of the PS3 overall, and emulate all BC games thru firmwares

It happened before with the jaggies that appeared on PS2 games playing on the PS3 and got taken care of thru the firmware update

Most likely they stated they would have atleast 85% of the PS1-PS2 games viable by end of this/next year

Yeah I agree, they've been doing firmware updates alot recently, adding more games to be played for those without the chips. I really dont think it will be a huge issue, since most of the games you cant play atm... no one would want to play anyways.

The PS3 really does try it best to make games look alot better

Playing GoWII in HD on the PS3 is pretty (gotta do a code, but it makes it crispier)

KHII, other PS2 games, even PS1 games like Street Fighter II Ex, that I just found last week underneath my enetertainment center after 4+ years looks nice, hell even Socom benefits from the loading to the benefits of Progrssive Scan when enabled

Microsoft got away with this because the original xbox only had 2-3 games that you really wanted to play down the road. (Halo, Fable, Shenmue, not much after that) The PS2 however, being the beast that it was is a little different. A lot of people have weird/obscure games that they liked a lot on the PS2. Which is why it hurts Sony to be getting rid of that chip. However, I'm keeping my PS2 anyway just for fucks sake. It was a good system, so why get rid of it?

As of right now, the only thing I want a PS3 for is because my PS2 is slowly dying. So, I need the backwards compatibility to be as good as possible.

When my PS2 died I got my PS3, it just made more sense than buying another PS2 I would end up selling anyways, when I knew that sooner or later i'd buy a PS3... just made more sense to me.
So sure, I rarely play an actual PS3 game on it, and it's mostly used for backwards compatibility, but it's still worth it for now because the images are better/crisper/sharper/whatever.. and in the long run I saved some money, so why not.

If you'd gotten another PS2 instead and waited 6 months to buy your PS3, you'd have saved $100 on the recent price drop, and then you could have had both a PS2 and a PS3 for the same amount of cash.

It makes sense to hold off on the purchase until at least there's something on the PS3 that you want. Why fork out 5x the price to get a device that only works for ~75% of the game library?

Yeah but now they're getting rid of the SKU right? so you'd still have to pay the 600 unless they get rid of Motorstorm and the stupid bundle they made.

Everyone needs to go easy on the backwards compatability whining, it still plays over a thousand games, and almost all of the top titles.

Like Aurik mentioned, a PS2 could be had for around a hundred bucks if you're really desperate, they won't stop producing it for sometime.
