Realistically, people care more about a lot of things than other people, provided said people are far enough away. People are dying all over the world right now. Starving, poor living conditions, no water, disease, etc. Whether in far off Africa or downtown Wherever USA, Im sure you can find plenty of real human beings in desperate need.
But how much of their disposable income does the average North American give away to charitable organizations or help funds? Not very much. Which means that, strictly speaking, most people care more about having a couple cups of coffee from Starbucks, a new videogame, or a couple of beers than they care about saving other human beings.
Out of sight, out of mind.
