Re: To harass PS2 users or not?

I would have quit FFXI years and years before I did had I been forced to continue to play it on the PS2. I could smell a person a mile away who used a controller or "didnt like to use a mouse and keyboard." It was always the lazy fuck who never could claim anything, didnt macro gear, and genuinely was just slow and not as efficient as most mouse and keyboard players. (I've never met a good PS2 tank...ever. Sorry if my standards of good are higher than yours also.) I felt like I put beer goggles on everytime I tried to play on the PS2, its just a huge limitation on the tools at your disposal. Wether or not you're used to it, or wether or not you think it would be better, you can't argue that the PC is a more efficient tool for the game you're currently playing. Face the fact that you're not willing to adjust to become a better player in the end.

Our main WHM always used a controller, her boyfriend convinced her to use a mouse and keyboard, she hated it. A month later she was twice the player she was before, with new macros and just an all around easier/quicker interface via a keyboard. She said she didn't know how she managed to play the game before...I imagine most people if they actually took the time, would feel the same.

people keep saying that $400 isnt much for for a pc to run ffxi, but its $400 dollars on top of what ive already invested in ffxi. $200 for the ps2 and i dont remember but i think the HDD was $100. also if this were to happen right now i'd probally quit because i hit one of those leveling funks where you dont get a pt invite for weeks. my blu/thf has been stuck at 50 for almost a a month.

Re: To harass PS2 users or not?

The argument of keyboard vs controller is pretty silly. Given the fact that no matter what, menu have a slight timer for how fast they open. Not to mention FFXI is not a FPS, and does not require precise aiming or twitch finger playing. Your cursor stays in the last place you left it, and it's easy to pull of spells or abilties by being in the menu a few sec b4 you need it. Not to mention Controller users have the same keyboard options open to them, by using a usb keyboard.

    X,T,B,A = 360
Square, Circle, X, Triangle = PS

    Attack
    kB: Ctrl A
    Cn: double tap A/X

    Main menu
    KB: -
    Cn: X/Square

    Macro row 1
KB : Hold down Ctr ( a half sec delay before it open due to having to hold)
Cn: Left trigger (instant, because holding isnt required to open)

    Macr row 2
KB: Hold down Alt (half sec delay due to having to be hold)
    Cn: Right trigger (intsant)
(anyone with both a controller and a keyboard can test this, and will see a slight difference in time the macro list pops up)

    Macro selection:
    KB: Hold Cntrl/Alt + 1-0
Cn: Trigger+ Arrow key shuffle Left/right (honestly takes fraction of a sec to flip over to the one u want., not to mention cursor stays on last position, allowing you to place important macros like healing. Factor in the slight delay in the menu opening between the two, and you can toggle to a macro just as fast as pressing a number. For example, I put all importat macros all the way left, or all the way right. And leave less important one like long recast time JA in teh center. Which allows me to select something important like heal in 2 steps (left trigger+A/X) its really not that hard.

    Heal:
    KB: H key
    Cn: Press left thumbstick

    Magic list:
    KB: "Ctl M"
Cn: "Engaged: A/X" "not engaged: A/X, down, A/X"
Can be done at a speed where you dont even see the first menu, because no matter what, menu's don't open for a few sec, and in that time you can select the next thing you wanted, BEFORE the previous menu opened. Which is what I do.

    Items list
    KB: Ctrl I
Cn: "engaged: downx2, A/X" "Not engaged: A/X, downx3, A/X" (same ease as magic above)

    Cycle party members:
    KB: Fkeys
    Cn: Up/down on arrow key

Cycle up and down in any menu:
    KB: arrow keys
    Cn: Arrow key

In the end, by sheer game design you're hard pressed to tell the difference in who is using controller and who is using mouse. Menus open on a set amount of secs, menues can be navigated during cast or JA animations, many functions are the exact number of steps to reach. And on a controller like any game, some people simply are faster and have better hand and eye coordination with them then others. Unless your argument is against those who use controller only, because I can't think of a good reason why a controller user isn't using macros too. Being someone who can use both, I see no performance issues. And if your main Whm was slow with a controller that could easily speak more about her own hand reflex time, than it does about everyone else's.

Because I know Awesome healers and tanks who use controllers. Not to mention the ton of JP players who use controllers for this game, and many of them don't seem to be suffering vs PC users. Like I said, It's not a FPS or RTS game. And in a game like FFXI i don't see an automatic control advantage to mouse/keyboard users. vs Controller/keyboard users.

Can pay for both game subscriptions to go back and foward though. I also agree that graphics don't matter much to me in ffxi. I wouldn't even mind if everyone was stick figures if it prevented lag in besiged, dynamis, and whitegate. I'd probably leave stick figure mode on all the time.
EQ/EQ2 managed to do OK, all things considered- which is to say they're Sony Online Entertainment and suck. The thing is- we'd bounce in droves to a new FF MMORPG, IF the game was an honest improvement on the old one. That's a tough deal, though. MMORPG players tend to get set in our ways, and EQ2 tried too hard to be new and only ended up a shadow of WoW.

I'd find a sequel amusing as heck if the price of admission was some epic battle in FFXI though. Beat something just short unkillable in a six-man BC, end up sacrificing yourself to save the world in a CS afterwards, with the result being an unlocked Content ID for the new world (and bye-bye to the old character, save as the name/race/face in the new one). It'd sure keep the gimps and RMT's out of the game when the price of admission is an epic battle and screwing up in the new world means you'll have to shove a new non-gimp account all the way through FFXI to do so.

What would people think about that? Would you end it all in FFXI with style to get into a sequel where people couldn't just buy a new account to get in, and RMT's would suffer like dogs to do so (and one banstick violation and they're back to zero, no matter how many accounts they can make?)?

There's one simple solution to fix the situational gear + small inventory problem, implement the stun penalty that you face when swapping gear in Ballista to the general game, Muhahaha. (not actually suggesting this, I just think it'd be funny)

You do know that PS2 users have and use macros too right? and we have short cuts to said macro's as well. sounds like your main whm was just an inexperienced player and over time matured naturaly. Switching to PC probably had little to do with it.
and keyboard vs. controler argument is hilarious. It would be like me saying: i like apples and you like oranges. Then me telling you that u suck because you eat oranges. Its personal preference. I grew up on nintendo, not PC games so i naturally am lost without a paddle in my hands. I also seem to remember that most of the ppl that fell through the holes in Garliage Shitadale blamed it on thier keyboards...

I play on PS2 and i'm one of my ls's main tanks, I guess that means not all PS2 tanks suck as you say (Because if I did suck they wouldnt let me tank jack, we have tons of plds). As for the claim thing, its very easy to cast on mobs on Ps2, from my experiences ps2 is actually a tad faster than PC (I have both, and my PC isnt a piece of shit either, only a few months old and it has all the latest hardware). In the past 3 months i've claimed a Nid and 2 faf's on my lolps2, which isnt that much but we only camp when its in our window (noon-midnight-ish est). So i'm not exactly sure at what point your trying to make, if you put a ps2 on a cable modem its much faster than 90% of the PC's out there because it doesnt have much to load (Dont argue this unless you tried it on ps2, I tried it and I have both).

Were the game optimized for PC instead of PS2, claiming on PS2 wouldn't be superior.

While I agree that PS2 graphics are most definitely inferior to PC, this post is a bit over the top. You say that anyone who plays PS2 is going to suck at FFXI; yet I am sure that there are a ton of good players on PS2 who are at the same caliber as you are/were.

I just upgraded my PC and just installed the font package and windower, guess what I'm using to move my character around?

then she has her settings too high for her machine.

on my four year old dell box (it's five now! but I play on a new pc since I needed dx10 for other games), I'd routinely see even day10 kings yellow.

hell, shit spawned so fast for me I'd run into that anti-bot code with manual claim attempts.

that's the key difference between pc and ps2 in you and your wife's case: you can't change a ps2's settings.

allow a pc to utilize more than 32megs of ram though, and she'd be able to see all 124 bodies in aery *and* a yellow fafnir; instead of being limited to 64 models simultaneously.

I don't think that has anything to do with it. Shit pops yellow for me on 360, and the 360 version is a port of the one for windows. And it's a pretty bad port at that, as it runs worse in pretty much every other way besides claiming, than my fairly old PC.

Yea claiming in a crowded area is far easier on PS2. There is simply "less" to load. Less color, less resolution, less draw distance, less all around specs.

And as someone said FFXI on 360 is a sloppy port overall. SE didn't seem to optimize at ALL on 360 to compensate for the extra visuals they added. Faf can pop right next to me, and i often won't see him. And then when everyone is yelling "they got it" Im like "WHERE???" Then I have to get other players out of my camera view by changing camera around, THEN im able to see him. On a machine that powerful its ridiculous. But hey.. SE admitted they got FFXI up and running on 360 in 2 weeks, so i guess I shouldn't have expected perfection

    What extra visuals?

As for mob spawns, it does take me forever to actually see the model show up 360, but I do see the name load yellow, and can claim the as of yet invisible mob.

Anybody also get a sound glitch on 360? Usually happens in crowded areas, but never goes away until I restart the Xbox, zoning does not fix it. Most sound effects will either just not even play, or play at a barely audible volume, most notable is the targeting 'ding' noise. When this happens, I'll sometimes here sounds from somewhere else in the zone, either way out of draw distance, or on a different floor, doesn't really make much sense..
