Edit: I think the ppl over at qj.net said it best with;

It is true that the opinion is worrisome to an extent (essentially, while unproven, it is potentially viable), but it appears that more concern has been emphasized toward creativity, variety and (gasp!) quality games for the PC, rather than always push the frontlines of graphics with first-person shooters, dungeon crawlers or real-time strategy games.

And even many ppl in the sector, and in many of the most reputable tech forums, you'll find not many are concerned with his comments.

I figured a friend of mine I originally met in FFXI would get a kick out of my original post, so I linked her to it.

I hope she doesn't get upset because of this, but her reply E-mail makes for a great read to anyone interested in this topic.

Background on my friend: Japanese-American, born to Japanese parents, born in United States, raised in Japan and went to primary/secondary school there, attended college there and in the US. She's a professional who lives and works in NY and just happens to be hooked on FFXI like so many of us posting here.

Majority of the Japanese that play FFXI is actually casual players.
But maybe a level above the American "casual players". SE isn't dumb.
They probably did product research and noted that majority of the
people that play FFXI are probably the same people that has played it
since original Final Fantasy ONE, that came out on the original Nintendo.

These people would have been in their late 20s, early 30s at the time
of FFXI release 6 years ago. These people, unlike the newer
generation, have not played other MMOs. Infact, for the majority of
the JPs in FFXI, FFXI is their FIRST EVER MMO. Of course, there were
a few hard core gamers that played Japanese version of "Ultima Online"
and "Lineage" that jumped to FFXI because they probably played FF ONE
too.

When FFXI first rolled out in Japan, it was MUCH different from what
it is now, especially pre-NA release from what I've been told. People
will gather in towns, house wives playing a little on their spare time
will exchange dinner ideas and recipes in say...

Yep, it was a glorified, if not, expensive, CHAT ROOM.

With the NA release, these super casual players got intimidated,
frustrated with difference in culture, scared, shocked, and left.
Only the more addicted remained, sealing the "JP HAIJIN" image amongst
then newbie NAs.

And another reason is that SE really wants to control FFXI. By
incorporating consoles, they can always evoke the, "It's not fair to
the console players" clause and prohibit third party software, even if
it's as harmless as fraps... I mean, my husband plays WoW and some
other PC MMORPGs, but there are cheats galore! This one game he
started playing the other day has hacks where you can literally KICK
someone off by forcing them to D/C.

And you're right about Japanese people not having PCs. I mean, if
they do, but due to limited house space, it would most likely be a
compact laptop. It will so not run any games, even FFXI. Ultimately
the PS2 will run games better than the laptop. The laptop may run
some crude Korean MMORPGs, but will crash in Dynamis, Limbus, probably
even in Whitegate.

Most internet access is done via the cellphone, where you can now use
it to pay stuff at the "conbini" with some kind of smart-phone
capability. My own MOTHER who has never heard of something as simple
as "online banking", but she can pay all her bills, send me a video
e-mail, and make international flight reservations from it. I'm
sure she's probably checked out a few porn sites as well. I mean, you
get spam e-mail and links to porn sites on your cellphone e-mail in
Japan. I mean, she has a little laptop, but I think it just collects
dust."

It was an old graphics machine at fed ex where my girlfriends dad works, he brought it home.

Processor is cool, card is nice, when I tried to install FFXI on it, it baffled the hell out of me for a second, then I realised OH SNAP! That isn't a 16x DVD... IT'S A FRICKIN CD-ROM!
