Well assuming we're all going to take the stance that you're either born gay or you aren't, it doesn't really matter what age he is. He can still be 8 and gay.

I agree, but unless he's declared that himself, I think it's unfair for us to draw our own conclusions about his sexuality at 8 years old.

Hence the OP's question about what age would be a good time to make that judgment. I agree though that 8 is far too young for anyone but that child himself to be able to tell whether or not he's gay.

It's never okay to try to make that judgment for someone else, at any age. A lot of young people are confused about their sexuality, and don't make a concrete decision about their sexual orientation until as late as their early 20s. A lot of people are conflicted about their sexuality for even longer than that. That should not be anyone else's concern.

There isn't a gene, like a light switch that can be flipped on or off that makes someone gay or straight. Human sexuality is much more complicated than that. I'm straight but I am not attracted to ALL (or even most) women, just like gay men are not out there trying to hump every man there is. People become attracted to people that fulfill their psychological and emotional needs AT THE TIME and as they grow and mature that changes. At 26 I'm not attracted to the same type of girls I was at 24, 18, or even 14 and if I was there would be something wrong with me.

If after hitting puberty he starts trying to make out with boys after gym class than you can call him gay, until then he is just a child and thinking of him sexually is just perverted, wrong, and fucked up.

I know you're joking.. but you should look at some of the opposing viewpoints on this subject.

Groups like Nambla(google search it) aim to "end the oppression of men and boys who have freely chosen mutually consenting relationships," and "support the rights of youth as well as adults to choose the partners with whom they wish to share and enjoy their bodies."

I dont' remember which class in college i heard this in, i think it was either my developmental psych class or my animal behavior class. But the professor went on to tell us that there is small evidence that it is a genetic thing. If you look at a lot of old family tree's, you can see evidence of large family members having children who always stay'd at home and had 'friends' of the same sex come over.

His reasoning, was that after families had a certain amount of children, it was necessary to have one that would not be interested in going out and reproducing and would want to stay home and do caretaking of the family.

There is no empirical evidence for this, but in that class he went on to show us a lot of old family history's that loosely corroborated what he was saying.

I don't quite believe it, but it was an interesting spin none the less. Of course families today aren't as big so you can't try to quantify it, if that were even possible.

Personally I have an uncle Cindy who I despise cause she's a drug addicted piece of scum, and my 'half brother' is technically also my half sister. He's also a pain in the ass but that's mostly because of his age rather than his orientation.

I don't really think you have any call to worry. If your family sucks as you say it does, it sucks whether he's going to be straight or gay, just help him get through that as much as you can until he's able to go off on his own and live a happy little life in whatever way he wants to. Best thing you can do is be supportive of whatever he turns out to be and let him know that while your family might be close minded, you are not.

Most of the 8 year old boys I teach tend to find girls disgusting creatures they can't be bothered with (unless it's in a "going out - you buy me a present for feb 14th and I might let you hold my hand once" way) - indeed the ultimate sanction to curb the lads in my class with their behaviour is to threaten to make them sit boy-girl-boy-girl.

The girls equally regard the boys as slightly ikky, noisy creatures they'd really rather like rid of - not anything particularly interesting.

Eight is far too young to know for sure. I'm sure there are some kids out there that have realized they're gay by that point, but certainly not many I would think. Personally, I didn't know until I was ten.

You'll just have to wait a few years. I'd say when he hits high school at the earliest, if you still feel that he could be gay, just talk to him and let him know that he has your support. My sister sat down and asked me one day, then we talked about it for quite a while, and it boosted my self-confidence quite a bit.

But yeah, don't do anything now.
