Anyways, if I had to give up .dat swapping, I'd have to give up a number of things. I have most of my FFXI music swapped out due to either the fact that the music got old after a while, or I wanted to preserve my ears (ie the Opening Screen Select menu). I'd have to get rid of Brandson's excellent UI modifications, which have made interface a bit more pleasing to the eyes. I'd have to give up ever swapping out old pieces of gear for better looking versions. Hell, my brother would have to give up creating new models in the first place.

A lot of this I just don't want to give up because it's either a more significant upgrade compared to the older details, or to try to find newer tastes in a stagnant game.

But as Sonomaa said, with the people who made absolutely sexy guns in CS came the people who swapped out their models with pure white versions so they could see a target at all times. It comes with the territory.

Would it kill them to make icons that weren't as ugly? Seriously, they can shove PS2 limitations, why can't they make icons that look as good as the ones in the UI pack? Get some cheap-as-free art-student interns to make them, just stop being lazy. >_<

What money issue? They make at least $77,940,000 a year on membership fees alone. (500,000 players x $12.99 a month x 12 months a year.) Sure, servers, developers, game masters, and what not aren't free, but I am still sure that they are turning a slight profit from FFXI.

Don't forget mules, personally i have 7, making mine $19.95.
It's obvious SE made a great game, they just focus on the wrong areas for improvement for whatever reason.
Also about the PS2 limitations, is that for real? I know the PS2 is a little old as far as electronics go, but ffxi plays fine for me...
Sony controls 60% of the gaming market for a reason(maybe not anymore because of PS3 and stuff >.>).

Honestly, if you think dat swapping is wrong, then your stupid. I for one will never ever give up my tail ribbons and specially made hair. Dat removal however, like darters, is the equivalent of spiked models in counter-strike, its shittastic, but nobody ever complained about my ultra-realistic M4, they just wanted to know where they could get the skin.

You can take my tail ribbons away when you pry them from my cold dead tail, and thats simply not going to happen.
