FAIL! First of all there are plenty of us African-Americans who ARE offended when another African-American uses the word and those that aren't are just as ignorant as the ones using the word. It's not ok for ANY race to say it. Just because SOME people from another race may not get offended by racial slurs (cracker, chink, spick, etc.) aimed at their race does not mean that it's being "overly sensitive" because a majority of African-Americans are still offended. Maybe you should do some research behind the history of that word and African-Americans in general before you say we are being "overly sensitive nowadays".

I don't know what race you are but I'll make an educated guess that you are not African-American or of African decent to be even more specific. Put yourself in the our shoes for a moment and image that your ancestors were stolen from their native land and forced into slavery for over 400 years, where they were visiously whipped, raped, hanged, and treated like property deemed equal to or less than animals. Those of us who are offended by the use of that word are so because we know the history behind it and all that I mentioned above and so much more is what we think of each time we hear that word uttered. You might want to go rent and watch the mini-series "Roots" by Alex Haley or read the book maybe then you'll have a better understanding of how we feel.

To all others I just want to point out that I am in no way attempting to downplay any of the hardships and horrors that I know each and every race of people have endured at some point in time, I am simply shedding some light for the less educated of what us African-Americans have edured.

I'm black and I always think it's funny when I see someone of my own kind getting so angry at a simple word. They act as if they were enslaved themselves or something, or that nigga has something to do with slavery?

To the white people I say this:
Ignore us, we're just being stupid niggas.

(I can say that because I'm black, not that I care if a white person says it.)

Re: The most ridiculous ban ever

It really depends on your upbringing, I think. People in some areas were taught that the n-word was the ultimate insult. It's not the one little word's meaning, but the weight given to it by your upbringing. It's one of two words I can think of I've never said.

Even if it is a little silly to be super-offended and harmed by one word, isn't it a little silly to be so offended at being asked not to use it? Is it some monumental inconvience that you simply don't use that one little word?

How many are there in the english language? Do you HAVE to say the n word? Why not just dodge the issue entirely and just submit to a tiny little favor and only say that word in settings where it won't offend anyone?

Puerto Rican is not a race. Plenty of Puerto Ricans are black. Plenty are white, Plenty are a mix of the two or even Indian mix. That's like saying "ur Jamaican, not black" OR "ur American, not black".

Don't be mad at a word, be mad at the racist. The guy the OP was talking about very clearly had no hate in his heart, and although the "That's what Filters are for," excuse doesn't work, it fucking SHOULD. That is EXACTLY what filters are for. I'm pretty sure you could "/sh I hate black people" and mean it, and nothing would happen, but if you MT a /tell to your friend as "/sh I love you nigger " Some dick gets offended.

Racism is wrong, words are not.

Or... you could just not use 1 word out of thousands simply to make things much easier?

If being offended by a simple word is dumb, then refusing not to use said word (resulting in negative consequences in some situations) which is not at all lacking in synonyms is even dumber.

As a human being who believe everyone is equal, I will feel bad about anyone who had to suffer like that or had to live something unfair. Thing like this should never happen and be repeated. However, I can't feel bad at all for people who look for pity because their ancestor had to suffer, when they have a "normal" life. Racial slur have as much meaning as you want them to have, and getting hurt/offended by them depend of you. In most case, you are giving a meaning to the word that isn't suposed to have in the context it was used.

My ancestor had their land stolen 200 years ago when England took over. It sucks for them, but am I allowed to complain because of that? No..not really. I know it can't be compared to the horror certain people had to live, but it still had a huge impact on the people here. My situation here isn't bad, and I'm not bound by what happened to my ancestor.

As long as Racism and Prejudice against entire groups of ppl exist, then imo ppl have a right to speak up about things, or be offended, and request that you not belittle them.

But to say "words are meaningless" is a bit naive. Wars are started over words, so clearly it's not the "word" that has the power, but the feelings and conditions behind them.

So you are of Native American decent? As I am also as well as my African-American ancestry and yes my life maybe somewhat "normal" but that doesn't mean I haven't had first hand racial encounters. I've been called nigger, blacky, and monkey before and been told to go back to Africa, so I'm affected by it personally as well as how I mentioned previously when I talked about the ancestors.

Sorry, didn't word my post correctly at 6am last night. What I wanted to say is that it's stupid to give more meaning to a word than the one intended by the user. If the N word was used to hurt someone, than yeah, it shouldnt have happened. If the word was just thrown around for no reason, without any negative undertone to it ...than it means nothing, and people shouldn't act offended by it.

Imo, racial slur are in the same category swear and random insult are. Shouldn't be used, but I wouldn't make a drama when it happens unless whoever is using it is racist and is trying to hurt someone. I personally wouldn't use the N word because there is no need for it in any discussion, but people make a bigger deal out of those words than they are. Why people get offended 10 times more when they get called "nigger" over "retard", I don't know. I prefer a 3rd grade insult about skin color, than a 4th grade insult about my intelligence.

    [edit]
I lied, I always says "jew" in FFXI when I talk about drop rate. >_> Sorry to every jew I offended

You have the right to be offended when people tell you racist comment like the one you mentioned. However, the problem doesn't lie in the N-word, but in their actions. Either way, most of the time when you see insult like this, it just means whoever is talking is out of argument and try to insult its opponent with unfounded personal attack.

Re: The most ridiculous ban ever

EVERYONE living in racially diverse places has dealt with racism, black or white. Hell, pop culture is extremely racist. There's this new obsession with all-things hip-hop and constant branding of white people as boring and greedy. If you wanna see how unfair things are, compare the difficulty of getting a scholarship as a poor white male to getting a scholarship as a poor black woman with equal grades.

Things aren't even at all, anywhere, the scale tips in one direction or another depending on where you go. We've all got the short end of the stick before, it's not an experience unique to being any specific race.
