I was checking out this website: http://www.playstation2au.com/ps2_hdloa ... dvance.htm i got the idea from the Odin Sphere thread. anyways it says that the HDloader isan't capable of playing online games that use DNAS. My question is, if you install HDloader, but don't instal the online game in question, can it still play as if you were running it like normal?

basically, i want to know if FFxi will still work if i Install HDloader on my HDD to preserve my PS2 game collection.

Damn, I just answered this question on the Odin Sphere one, assuming that you:

Have a legitimate FFXI installed in your PS 2 (read:no you can't play FFXI for free), you can install HL in your HD it won't give you any conflicts. However, you won't be able to activate HL from your PS 2's HD. It's a memory card exploit, so it's pointless to have it on your PS 2's HD. If you have any other HL questions just PM.

wait, im confused. I thought HDloader was something you put on your PS2 HDD that will let you copy games onto it, thus almost eliminating load times and preserving your games from the eventuality of getting them scratched/unplayable. I'm not sure what your talking about when you say "memory card exploit". I know that a whole game can't be downloaded onto a memory card. My question was wether you can download HDloader on your hard drive and still be able to play FFxi on it (which i already have installed). the website mentioned something about it interfering with DNAS.

I have no intentions of playing FFxi for free, not sure where you got that from.

The normal program is a memory card hack/loader. You load a small file into your memory card, boot the file by inserting a PS1 game and it will interact with your hard drive in the PS2. I have a 200 gig HD in mine and use it as a lazy man's disc changer. I usually buy the game, copy it to HD and boot it from there and keep the dvd on the shelf.

HDLoader (commercial) is a pressed dvd/cd of a free program. Essentially they are taking someone else's code and selling it. The only upside of this is you don't need to load anything to your memory card.

Compatibility varies between games, some have patches, some don't. For instance FFXII has some issues when loading from the hard drive, especially with FMV. For those games, I just run them off the original disk. However for other things, I prefer the HD as I don't have to get up to change the disc, it loads quicker and keep the disc in better condition.

I'm sure this will come up, but no you can't load a DVD-R without a modchip or another exploit. You can however hook up your PS2 HD directly to your pc and transfer ISO files. This process is necessary when loading DVD-9 games. You will have to "flatten" the ISO.

It's a great tool, if you can get the free version, as compatibility is better, and there are updates (plus the whole not supporting stolen code). My PS2 is having some problems reading CD files lately and this completely solves the problem, it's a great tool. (Oh you can boot imports too).
