What I was saying is that Sam Raimi has actually said in the past that they gave up (i.e. Stopped trying to be serious) halfway thru Evil Dead 2.

Though truth be told, the tree rape scene in Evil Dead 1 is still the funniest part of the entire trilogy.

Well being a Sondheim fan for ages, I kinda went into this movie already liking it.

I thought it was great, since I'm a musical fan anyway. The only things that kinda bothered me really was the amount of songs they had to cut (but it's for a movie so go figure), the actress who plays Joanna, the singing done by the guy who plays Anthony (the sailor boy), and how sometimes (maybe it was the theater I was in) the orchestration got so loud that it almost drowned out what people were saying. Sondheim is known for writing very wordy musicals, so I can imagine for some people there was a lot of "watdidhesay?"

I think we got a lot of sneery looks, (my best friend and I) because every time someone was killed and dropped we were laughing.

If you come into it knowing and embracing that there's going to be singing and blood, I think people will enjoy it. I think there was a big mistake marketing this movie as a regular one and not a musical. It would explain JD gothy emo fangirls (fuck just thinking of them makes me angryyyyyyyyyyy) leaving in the middle of it.

Okay, there is some truth to this. If Johnny Depp showed up on my doorstep and said, "HAVE MY BABIES!".. actually "HAVE MORE OF MY BABIES!" I would *shrug* and surely let him in. BUT.. I did see Sweeny Todd, and it was absolutely amazing. Johnny Depp can take on ANY role.. Mute Robot.. Alcoholic Captain..Musical Murderer...honestly. He's very talented. I hope he wins an Oscar in February because he deserves it.

It was a movie...Transformers don't run around planet Earth either. Once Upon A Time In Mexico was meant to be over the top and completely outrageous. I seriously doubt they were taking themselves that serious.

Unless I'm mistaken, weren't the first two in the series serious? I don't understand why they would have gone from serious > parody on the third one. Also have to wonder why it was billed as an action/thriller and not comedy/parody or anything like that. I think it was just a shitty movie.

Watched it on Christmas.

Was an excellent film; gory as fuck and had the timeless touch of Tim Burton.

Not Johnny Depp's best but he did an exceptional job none-the-less.

Well I normally don't watch them but the commercial for this movie only showed a little singing whereas other commercials for musicals are chock full of just singing and no talking. I think I can safely assume that some musicals have far more songs than others, and I would probably like the ones with fewer songs more.

saw this movie last night and absolutely loved it.

i had heard of the musical but wasnt familiar with any of the songs but ultimately I was very impressed with the performances.

we also had some emo looking teens leave our theater as well and I wanted to trip them as they were climbing down the stairs

There's a lot more singing in it than the commercials lead people to believe, so just be aware of that.

Still, Sweeney Todd is an amazing show, I was in a production of it and sang Johanna's song on numerous occasions for competitions. The show's got so many meanings and hidden meanings in it that were brought out by the director when it was originally staged in the late 70s, besides just the obvious revenge factor. :D It's not a typical 'sing along' musical, I can't think of any melodies that would stand out and have people humming as they leave... none of the music is really a typically 'simple' easy melody, Sondheim likes to play with time signatures and funky keys and melodics. Even so, there are some really pretty melodies in the show, namely the Johanna songs (minus the Judge's, which was not put in the movie and is rarely staged (he scourges himself while thinking about Johanna, a girl of sixteen he's raised since she was like, 4, whom he's been sneaking glances of for years)), and "Not While I'm Around," which has been sung by a number of people on solo albums and such.

I hate the Johanna, I hated listening to her, I hated watching her, but then, most Johannas disappoint me. Helena was great, but the only problem I found was that her singing voice is rather weak, so everything comes out a bit gentle... it gives a sort of misleading characterization to the role. Johnny was excellent, and his voice, while not the greatest baritone ever, was perfectly adequate.. and I love Alan Rickman as well. Sacha was hilarious, the Toby was amazing... and the look of the movie was just fabulous.

Phantom of the Opera wasn't a bad theatre musical, either. Not great, but certainly was worth a matinee.

Depp + Carter + Burton = good moviemaking.

My stupid, lame-ass tiny town has decided not to show this movie. I wanna cry.

The nearest other movie theater is a 45 min drive away, and they're not showing it either. In fact, if I want to have any hope of seeing it, I'll have to make a 2+ hour drive to Pittsburgh, which isn't very possible these days. ; ;
