I have a strong desire to draw myself away from this conversation for a myriad of reasons (mostly the futility), but I can't help but ask myself "Did these people totally misunderstand or forget about 'With Apologies to Jesse Jackson'?" At any rate, I will have to be the one opposing opinion in this topic, just so you encounter at least one if your life time.
We live in a country where people who have never seen a black person before in their entire life will be frightened, intimidated, or otherwise agitated if he or she sees one. You are affected by what you think of us, whether you realize it or not (the real tragedy is that it even affects us.) It may not manifest itself into actual racism, but there are many things out there that, to different degrees, reinforce a stereotype. This one is that Africans are disease-ridden. I'm not going to say it's overtly racist, or even subtly racist. However, even though it is not suggesting Blacks always carry contagious diseases, it is a scenario in which many black people have a horrible disease and are going to die or must be put down. HIV, Ebola...I liked Outbreak! I really did, but that's nearly the same deal and it could create the same kind of unfounded discrimination that's been keeping Mexican immigrants out of this country legally while giving Europeans a fucking stamp and a slap on the back (which is how AIDS got here from Africa, through Europe.)
Also, this isn't Harlem, this is Africa. Different fucking problems...
"Oh, shit’s going down in Darfur..LETS MAKE A ZOMBIE GAME THERE! :D"
"God knows people are dying, we could fit it into the script!"
"Ahhh, it’s fun when art imitates life."
Racially insensitive? Partially, but it's mostly humanely insensitive, in my opinion. The continent has been experiencing horrors (pretty much all 4 horsemen) for decades and you decide to put it in a zombie game. Brilliant. And, of course, a black guy can't take care of it. They are unable to deal with the rigors of zombie fighting. Only the White man is capable of dealing with the stress.
RE4 was different. As I understand it, they were Spaniards (as opposed to Latinos.) Now, Spaniards are White. The Moors ran through there, but so did the Celts (which, interestingly enough, gives us Black Irish, but I digress), and since they retain most of the usual White traits, that is what they are considered. So RE4 was White on White. The GTA series is based in a city area, which is a melting pot. No matter which game, you were an equal opportunity murderer.
One last thing. Yea, Japan is culturally isolated, but that hasn't stopped them from consuming American culture through TV, music, & movies (though we do tend to shove it down various throats.) They have no more reason to be this ignorant or insensitive than America does in regards to Muslim cultures.
Now, I’m going to do the same thing I did the last time I had to talk about racism on a fucking FFXI message board (believe it was KI, big shock): Post ONCE, never look at this topic again, and get on with my life.
......I wonder if Ryko is smarter than me and will avoid this like I originally intended to. I was having such a nice morning...
This whole issue is so ridiculous. I can't wait to tell my black friend about it.
I understand where you're coming from, but the one thing I'd point out, is that theres a big difference between applying for a visa/greencard vs. crawling through a 2 mile hole in the ground.
I JUST WATCHED STAR WARS
WTF WHY IS DARTH VADER BLACK?!
OMG DATS RACIST
for cereal, I'm black and I'm laughing my ass off, I can't believe people take this shit seriously
Time for uncomfortable truth: Black people will never be equal until their so called leaders (Jesse Jackson is not the emperor of black people etc) stop demanding unequal treatment.
In regards to this, they use already existing characters who have ties to this place, the experience to make it a game where you can actually shoot and kill stuff as opposed to running like fuck and getting infected and a fanbase.Originally Posted by Septimus

But I bet, somehow even with a black protagonist people would find a way to complain about racism (IT WAS MADE BY JAPANESE PEOPLE, RACISTSSSS)
How could anybody take this seriously? I laughed. I don't see how you could think RE5 is going to be some huge racial statement type deal. If anything it would be to bring even more attention to the already well known disease epidemic in Africa (as if a game such as RE5 would convey this message). It is just another zombie game, I wish people would give up the whole "HEY YOU CAN'T DO THAT! THATS RACIST" stance.
IMO the word racism should be redefined, in our society today, you can't do anything without being racist. By this logic, that cup of black coffee you love is racist, don't drink it or I'm calling the NAACP. I can't make up one for white people...so I'll call them crackers. See what I did there? I tried to even out my racism, except it didn't work because guess what? Besides it just ending up double racist (lol), I'm also not aware of a cracker organization.
Now before you get your panties in a bunch, no I was not being serious. I used it as an example to show how tired and outdated the term is. We don't live in 1938 or some small 3rd world country still fighting for land. It's 2007, get with the times and stop worrying over what color somebody chose to talk about/use.
If I end up killing grey zomies next RE fuck you.
Ugh, i'm staying away from this. For now.
Black people can't be zombies, watermelons don't have brains and I don't think the ones in chickens count.
Don't be silly, if melonz and chickenz was what made someone a zombie then there would be no such thing as a human!Originally Posted by Ryko

Sounds like the Eminem of Africa.
Damn you white people, always trying to kill us.

Until proven otherwise, they're a dude. And black.
This is one of the things that really irritates me, because this is de-constructive to efforts that are dealing with things that are ACTUALLY racist. As a matter of fact, some of those people seem extremely racist to me for even suggesting things like "Zombies should never be black." It's set in fucking Africa...there's, y'know, black people there...this is right up there with old-school chivalry in terms of hypocrisy, and irony. There is a good chance of there being more black people in this game than any before it. They aren't doing something like "Oh shit, distract the black zombies with a watermelon in the middle of the abandoned KFC restaurant".
You aren't supposed to look at black ZOMBIES as representative of black PEOPLE. They are zombies, you treat them like any other zombie. I really hope Capcom ignores the morons, they sure as hell don't deserve to be taken seriously.
AW HELL NAW.
If a black man was sent in to take care of it, Capcom would be dealing with accusations of racism because the hero is a stereotypically violent black man perpetrating black-on-black crime.Originally Posted by LD
of course Capcom would probably make him hold his pistol sideways....but that's not the point damnit!
Also, don't forget, RE4 wasn't set in Spain. Those weren't Spainard zombies. As they reiterate time and time and time again in the game, they are in "Europe" and the people are "Europeans". I don't know where people get Spain out of the whole thing...
They'll probably set RE5 in a place "Somewhere south of Europe" and he'll be killing "Somewhere south of Europeans".
and then they'll be accused of perpetuating the perception of Africa as "the dark continent", and hey, what do you mean "south" of Europeans anyway? Are you trying to say that the black man is beneath the white man? That's fucking bullshit, you racist!
Winning is impossible.
Of course it's possible that this game does have really offensive stereotypes - but it's not possible to make a zombie game where zombies are African without having to deal with the stereotype that Africans have teh AIDS.
On that note, can you fuck a zombie with a condom and stay uninfected?
Jesus christ I'm rambling.
Although the actual place is never mentioned, there are hints all over the place that suggests it takes place in a fictional Spain >_>Originally Posted by archibaldcrane
1. "Somewhere" in Europe.
2. Some fakeass Spanish accent by the local folk
3. The currency used, peseta, was Spain's currency before adopting the Euro.
We can deduct it was set in a fictional Spain (it's RE after all lol).
The whole racism thing about this game, meh, it's subjective. I just wanna shot moar zombies IDC if they are nigras, beaners, whitey, hebrews, and so on, anything to save humanity and destroy the evil decepticons! <_<
Heres the real question, is any white person offended when they are called a cracker or honkey? I was recently informed that I'm supposed to be offended as they are racial slurs, which was news to me.
But yeah thats racist and we should all go recreate the million man march and what not.
