I am mainly taking it because of the family business... they want me to take business management so I could get more involved and some other blabla about how i'll need to take over eventually anyways and it'll be a good idea, so yeah.
If it was up to me, i'd be playing soccer right now (if it wasn't for the stupid back injury that killed my career, that is..) but it sounds pretty interesting regardless that I could go through with it. I'm just not excited about the idea of going back to school after taking that year off recovering heh.
Since we both live in Ventura county I think I can help out.
In my situation, I enrolled in a JC with the ultimate goal of getting a teacher's credential after transfer. Now, depending on where I wanted to transfer, I needed different completed units. Example: I looked into San Jose state, and they wanted Chem 5 in their science requirements, and Chem 5 isn't even taught at a JC in Ventura county. They said I'd have to move to San Jose, enroll in a JC there, and take Chem 5. So, because of that bullshit, I'm currently in the works of transferring to CSUCI.
I'd say you should talk to a college counselor at any of the JCs around here, they really helped me out, especially with my major. If they hadn't pointed out how fucked I'd be as a Liberal Studies major I never would have found out until it was too late.
First of all, it depends on where you live but Saddleback college is by far the best JC in CA. It also is the best for transfusing to a CA UC. I've Known a bunch of people that went there for 2 years and went on to UCSD, USC, UC Berkeley and other good UCs. If you don't live by saddleback then try go to a JC that is a sister school of saddleback, i think there is 1 in northern CA and 5 in the south.
Now if you want to get into a good UC you are going to need around 30 units to transfer with and a 3.0+ GPA. UCLA and USCA for most degrees are 3.0, UC Berkeley is 3.2 for most degrees.
Now i don't know the classes offered at saddleback that will transfer, but there are a good amount of classes that all major universities will accept.
For example:
Spanish / French / ASL
English 100 - English 1B - English 1A
most colleges will want you to have 2 upper level math classes. Example: Statistics
intro to Psychology, Music appreciation, Com. 100/Public Speaking,
1-2 History classes. Usually 1 US History and 1 World Civ.
2 Science classes. Example: Anthropology and Biology
You will also need 1 English Lit. Class and 1 Philosophy class.
If your goal is to transfer to a UC, then any class you get anyhthing below a B in you need to retake.
The beauty of going to a JC is that it is very cheap to retake classes.
If you can get all A's and B's you have a very good shot at going to a UC.
So basically knock all the regulars out in the first two years, and then transfer with enough units?
I figured i'd get 60 units and then transfer to a UC for the business major... or is just doing 1 year and getting 30 units THEN trying to transfer better because if I keep my grades up the GPA is easily attained?
Also, besides the units and GPA, do they want you to do other random stuff outside of the regular school work in order to get into schools like USC and Berkeley?
Guess i'll go sit down with a counselor again...
