Player made guides to playing jobs at your potential

I intend this post to be a guide only with you the players of FFXI to be the teachers...

This post is here hopes of getting everyone's opinion's on what kind of gear/merits would bring out the greatest potential on any job whatever it may be...

Tell your side of what YOU think would bring out the full power of say.. a Warrior or a Dark Knight.

Explain how would it would be beneficial in a Merit party or in a sense of Endgame activities

A good example is the job of a Warrior whom of which can Tank, Perform Spike Damage, DoT Damage, and even be a kiter, Provided the setup is correct

Use this example when describing what your job has the greatest potential in and how you would gear/merit it to bring it out.

This post can even be a guide to other players who wish to seek Advice in the best gear for their Job and even be able to set goals to what they want to aspire to be.

admin: renamed topic again and cleaned up spelling

Giving this topic one last chance, follow the guidelines of the OP at his request. Also renamed the topic to be easier for some of the weaker minded BG forumgoers.

If its fail by tomorrow Ill just lock, trolling will get you banned.

    Re: Recommendations... "Potential"

I like this topic. I'll post on it, in the views of a RDM main and NIN, second job.

In terms of merits, as a RDM main, I went 4MP 4HP. Had I not had NIN to 75, I would have went 8MP, especially being a Mithra. Had I been Taru 8HP.

I use my NIN/drk on Ultima/Omega and the MP pool comes into play nicely there. I have a ton of MP to use /drk spells to pull hate. The 4HP helps with all the HP and Magic Resist gear.

I have hopes of Soloing so I chose half HP/MP for RDM as well, it just all seemed to make sense. Sometimes I worry I won't have enough MP to solo such as Riiari/Maiev/Avesta do, but I think I can back it if I try hard with skill and some nice gear. And maybe a buncha Ethers/other provisions.

Enfeebling Magic to 8. I am still indecisive about my next skill, but I am 75% positive it will be all the way to 8. And 50% positive it will be Elemental. Elemental comes into play heavily while RDM soloing, and I feel that would be the wisest choice. The other options I am looking at their are Ninjutsu, for tanking as RDM/nin and NIN itself. Probably not EVA as I am a Mithra with decent Eva in general, and on RDM, it's not about the mob missing you at all, imo.

Attributes atm are MND2, Int1. I think I am finishing them off with Intx2 and MNDx3. I know I want them both halved at least, but 90k for just meritx3 is crazy, want to think on it heavily.

Others, heh. Ok, I have Enmity+4. XD For NIN mostly, and jic I start tanking for an alliance AS RDM/nin. But, hey, it's also a challenge to not pull hate as just a debuffer/curer in any given alliance, too. It's been a challenge since I seemed to pull hate without them. I've been learning and doing much better, I grabbed some Enmity- gear that also works with resting to help. I also have Spell interrupt-2. I am thinking of taking this to lvl 4, but at the same time is it worth it? I have Three fast cast items for RDM, and Ichi is nearly as fast as a NIN's NI. So, I am thinking of going Mob Crit Rate-. That, I feel might help more in the longrun than Spell interrupt. I have a lot of work to do on many merits. :3

RDM Merits: A lot of Solo RDM go Convert recast down, and thinking back, it's just another thing that my hinder the solo abilities, but I've got 5 Wind, 5 Ice. I feel in Kite-soloing, Grav actually resists quicker, but is just as effectively needed. (Silencing Suzy/Tiamat/Ouryu2 is hot shit as well, imo.)

Tier 2: Para2x2, Slow2x1, Phal2x1 atm. Phal2 actually helps on magic resist, too, so I keep it for that. I may take my para to 3, and Slow to 2 as well. Or Slow2, and Para2. However, this leads into gear...

Enfeebling skill for RDM is your friend. As well as MND. Recently at Faf, I stacked I think 334 Enfeeb skill and 22-27 MND. First Para land, I procced a MEAN para. And I'm proud of that. So, try to go for Enfeebling skill gear, and until you get that gear, get MND/INT pieces. Even having a mean skill sometimes MND/INT is better for it. (Or so I am learning via Riiari. He feels MND will best proc over skill for lower lvl mobs. He will stack MND for Cactrot and his Para/Slow are sick.)

For nukes go Elemental Skill, Magic Attack and INT. I stack int where I can't get Ele skill, and I have a decent resist rate on most mobs. 520+ Thunder3 on Nid recently.

Gear that I'd recommend looking into, and yes take much work:

HQ Staves of at least a few elements
Every AF2 piece. I find every single piece has MUCH use.
Dalmatica for E peen and Refresh+1. If you plan on tanking anything has magic, the MDB comes in handy as well.
    Altruistic Cape
    Penitent's Rore
    Aqua Rings, Snow Rings
Magnetic Earring (depending on your pref)
    Loq. Earring, Mold earring
    Nashira Seraweels
    Enfeeb Torq/Ele Torq
    Some Errant/Mahatma pieces
    Devotee's Mitts+1

I could go on and on, heh.

And I could go on and on for RDM, but I'll end it there for now, I think. I love this job, there's so much to it, so much to learn, and I feel I am very needed in the end-game element, and RDM is not something you can half-ass and get away with it, usually. Holding up a Refresh cycle, Hastes, Stun cycle, Enfeebs, Phals, curing, while keeping up MP, etc all in one fight might not seem like much to a non RDM, but it gets hella crazy.

Ninja Edit: Since it doesn't seem like this topic might get any other replies, and Sonocat was saying he was going to lock it if it fails, then, why the hell not?: IBTL!

Also, it's a good idea, but honestly, Airenn's post is the closes to what you'd want, going from the OP, and it's a good post, but really cliff notes. The KI and AK forums have huge threaded stickies for pretty much every job, even though the bulk of gear and levelling advice wouldn't apply here, it'd be made up for easily by the really specific advanced stuff. You'd need at least a thread per job to keep stuff easily viewable and clutterfree, and probably one or two people per job, who keep the job's OP in order.

There's a fuckton of awesome info on BG/LJ's and the like, that really doesn't get the attention it deserves, but gathering it all, and presenting it in a readable way seems like a gargantuan task. Lurking moar is a tiring and lengthy way to get all the juicy tidbits, so good luck with this getting off the ground.

From what Baha says is true. i know there are loads of info out there on how to perform every job to it's max...

I have learned from what i have read here in these forums and from LS members that pretty much anything and everything topic-wise has been beaten to death and continues into the afterlife.

Probably the most controversal topic that i'd like to see is a topic on how to kill AV efficently

    Re: Recommendations... "Potential"

Well, my Warrior and Dark Knight are both 37, so I'll comment on BLM instead.

It's a versatile job that you can do a wide variety of stuff with from soloing VT-ITs or quite a few NMs that would wtfpwn other jobs. Or you can be a Stun whore. Or probably do a dozen different things...notably like nuking stuff with your Thunder/Blizzard spells.

Getting your Enfeebling Magic skill up to at least the level of a gimpy 75 RDM is probably one of the things I've found most useful. That, and a MND build macro for Stoneskin (which might help Blink shadows proc more frequently too, but I've never seen any tests to confirm that so take it with a grain of salt) makes playing crowd control much less likely to get you killed. You can do that pretty easily with merits (I'd suggest 8/8 elemental and enfeebling) and the Igqira head/legs.

    That's all I've got.

Seconded the please thing and the neg on the plz, hehe.

Sadly, it's true, my post, however longer than other posts in the thread so far, are still only cliff notes to 4 years of playing said job. And even then, it touches end game only, really. I'll also second the notion to check out Alla/KI's job-specific forums for the in-depth, crazy-long posts on each job. I should probably do that myself, as there are some jobs I would just have NO clue about playing if I was forced to play @ 75 or so. Ridill war spam tp seems easy right? Betcha it's not AS easy as sounds, but idk that for sure now, do I? :O

Re: Player made guides to playing jobs at your potential

    whitemage:

best merits are barspells, cure speed, regen. pick two; consider talking with other members of your shell to coordinate choices: a shell needs a couple of each. (of these three, barspells is most important for hnm, but doesn't really shine unless you have the relic pants)

work on collecting the support gear for these too (relic pants/blessed body, cure clogs/r.pumps, relic body)

only merits you *need* to have in category II are at least one point in devotion and (ideally) 3 points in Shellra V. after that, you can spend them pretty much how you like.

like evilpaul, I've found enfeebling very useful, at least into the A skill range. it's a little harder for whitemage, but merits, your AF(/+1) body, a spider torque, and then either the relic mitts or 10+ points in either nashira legs / marduk shoes / sea cape / elite beret(/+1) will get you to 261-266 which should be enough; use the right elemental staves for your debuffs too: minimally, you should have earth(slow), ice(paralyze), wind(silence). HQ's are nice but if your only use is enfeebling on whitemage, then NQ is probably fine.

enhancing magic is important too for whitemage, especially if you spec barspell; every 5 points of enhancing is +1 barspell. I'd recommend enfeebling+enhancing for your magic skill merits. this will help your stoneskin too.

HP/MP is pretty much up to you, I'm doing 8MP as hume, if I had a tank job I'd probably do 4/4. if I was taru I'd probably do 8HP.

other categories: I wouldn't worry about stats,(use them for another job) but if I did them for whm, mind is the way to go. misc: spell interrupt down and enmity- are both good, but I would do crits instead of one of these if you have a non-mage job. combat skills for whitemage aren't worth it really: use for another job; although club/staff/evasion/shield are the choices I'd make if I was meriting this category for whm.

useful gear stats: cure potency/enmity-/mind/magic defense/hp/mp/haste/skill+ not in any particular order.

I'd recommend at least three gear sets: idle set, barspell set, enfeebling set. use elemental staves of the appropriate type when enfeebling. idle set should include a refresh body; if you idle in a cleric's or a dalm, make sure you macro in your noble's for cures. if you don't idle in cleric's, make sure you macro in cleric's for regen. - I like to idle in cleric's because it has more enmity- and more mp than noble's.

come up with a reliable system for targeting players in your alliance outside your party; there's a couple ways to do it:

    1. bind the key commands for cursor up and cursor down in the compact keyboard config ingame. you can access these on full keyboard by holding control or alt and pressing the key.

    2. set up row(s) of macros with /ta <a10-15> <a20-25> macros (either alone or with common spells) you can combine several of these into one macro with this trick: /ta <a10> /ta <stpc> /ta <a11> ..etc - you can escape the <stpc> line in between each to cancel the macro - this will leave you targeting the last person you let it target.

    3. cast spells via text on non-party members: /ma "spell name III" name.
you can use the above <a#> variables instead of their name, these no longer have to be properly capitalized, but the /ma and " " must be exactly that (no /MA or ' ' ) and <> variables must be in all lower case (no <T>)

there, should be enough to get you started; sylphet has a really nice LJ that goes much more in depth on gear choices and macroing than I ever could here, I suggest checking it out.

Re: Player made guides to playing jobs at your potential

Hey, no fair Ryko and Bagel, mine was first but got deleted in the old thread!

    Code:
                   K
                   H
    ignored puppetmAster
         loyal red Mage
                   S
         proud warrIor
         wise summoNer
Therefore, the full potential of a puppetmAster is not to be ignored. And I need to level darK mage, wHite mage, and corSair. To do this, you just need to parse well on Kirin. Be sure to melee with your automaton and sub WAR for that added damage. As PUP, you'll need every extra bit you can muster to compete on the parse. You don't need to come in first, you just need to not come in last. Namely, come in above the DRG. Even better if he's subbing WHM and not meleeing and leaving only his wyvern engaged.
