    Work debate

    So, I'm at work and the topic of what you consider a sport comes up.

    Now, my definition of a sport is an activity where there can clearly be determined a winner or a loser, such as baseball, football, basketball, swimming, golf, hunting, etc.

    Anything that has a judged determination of who wins, I do not consider a sport, such as gymastics, synchronized swimming, surfing, etc.

    Some people may argue that ref's have to 'judge' or 'call' things in baseball or football, or just about any 'sport', but, that's only because they can't get a clear view of what did or didn't happen.

    What does BG think?

    Re: Work debate

    Any type of game has a winner and loser. That hardly defines a "sport."

    So yah, I'd have to consider the above definition better than anything I can come up with.

    Re: Work debate

    so gaming tournies like World Pump Festival, Evolution East/West/World, CPL, CAL, and some other MLG events considered sports also? BEAST!!! jk ;p

    I disagree cuz yea, a lot of judged events are part of the olympics and thus they are sports as well, ditto on most X-Games events etc.

    Re: Work debate

    If people compete in it, and there are rules, it's considered a sport.

    Re: Work debate

    If it has a ball or a playing device of some kind it is a sport.

    If it doesn't, it is an activity that requires athleticism. Also there has to be direct competition between people, maybe not to declare a winner/loser but in order to quanitify ones ability vs. their own competitive peers.

    First line is what i consider a sport, it has to have a ball or a puck or something. Anything else I consider athletic competition. Semantics? whatever.

    I like this. But I'd also like to argue the 'rules' thing. What rules do gymnasts have to abide by? Surfers? The only thing I can think of that they shouldn't do is fall, and that's hardly considered a rule.

    These days even cheerleading is considered a sport by some.

    Although I would consider that more of a spectator sport. 8)

    I said it has to have a ball to be called a sport, not everything that uses a ball is a sport

    However after looking at that wiki and seeing what curling is, i think i would call that a sport, it requires agility, dexterity, stamina, speed and uses tools to accomplish a quantifiable goal.

    It's a wierd ass sport, but by my criteria is a sport none-the-less, which is by no means official.

    What about Boxing or wrestling? Unless you count the balls you have to have to do that stuff

    Wrestling = Yes
    Boxing = Yes
    Curling = No

    Lol. The guys in curling with the "brooms" look like they're using Swiffers to buff the ice haha.

    Re: Work debate

    Under my definition of a sport, wrestling or boxing would be considered a sport, because there's a clear definition of a winner or a loser. The person who kicks the other one's ass wins.

    hmm, boxing i'll say the gloves are the device used >.> and wrestling is just gay. I'd say they are both sports though because even though there is no ball or whatever there is still a direct compeition between peers that requires a lot of skill. However i still don't consider cheerleading a 'sport' as it is self competition and they are not directly competing and being judged vs. another person, but judged according to a specific set of rules and then those scores are crossed to determine a winner.

    Re: Work debate

    I don't agree that any judged competition is a sport because one judge could score them higher than another judge...so they could win based on one opinion but lose on another, thus making it an unclear definition of who won or lost.

    I like how you worded that, anything judged by personal opinion is not a sport.
