Favorite Sushi

Well, I'm going out with some friends friday night to celebrate my friends 20th. We (group of 4 close friends) plan on going out for sushi at either a Hama or SushiCo, then go party back at the apartment with the rest of our friends, ya know the 20-30 ppl you like but not enough to invite out for sushi.

Anyway, my question is this. I've had sushi before, your usual california roll. I've tried some...I think it was called Sashimi, it was salmon and it was pretty good, I enjoyed it. Having thoroughly enjoyed sushi before, I'm thinking of going for something not-the-norm, this time.

I'm trying to find something new to try, so I wanted to ask if anyone has a particular favorite type of sushi, or sashimi, or a favorite dish in general. I'm looking to try something new since the 4 of us are going out before the drinking games begin. It's going to be a night of fun! So, I ask you, whats your favorite?

California roll, spider roll, (maybe only in new mexico but) New mexican roll. NM roll is pretty much a california roll but it has green chilie.

Tepanyaki, or Teriyaki rice is really good. Not sure on the name though.

I usually just get Chirashi (assorted fish on top of rice) or a large sashimi combo with rice.

If you're inexperienced you'll have to try.

Unagi - bbqed eel, usually popular among those that dislike raw fish.

Spider roll - deep fried soft shell crab, popular among non fish eaters as well.

Uni - Sea Urchin eggs, has a creamy texture to it.

Toro - fatty part of tuna, it melts in your mouth and probably the most expensive sushi you can get next to fugu.

Mussell shooters - quail egg, chopped up mussells, onions, lemon, usually good among a group since it's suppose to be taken down like a shot i think!

Or if you're hardcore, sit at the sushi bar, and all 4 of you order Omakase (to trust) and the chef will just give you whatever is the freshest fish made in a unique way usually. Pricey though.

Shrimp sashimi is good, squid is ok, but stay away from fucking eel. It blows lol

I agree with spider roll - whenever my brother comes up from the City, that's the one thing that remains constant when we go out for sushi. I also like mirugai (geoduck - giant clam) a lot.

The only two I really flat out avoid are the california rolls and uni (sea urchin), the former because I dislike avocado/cucumber and the later because no matter how many times we try it, it still tastes nasty.

I looked up Dragon Roll, it seems interesting lol. I'm down to try anything at least once. My usual theory is to try everything twice, because you might mess it up the 1st time >.> lol. Yea, I enjoy fish, but I'm a little hesitant to try eel...trying to find something ...rare, for lack of any better word for it I guess. Not like...some rare fish that you never find, just a dish thats not the norm.

I most prefer basic sashimi or nigri sushi. I'm not that big a fan of rolls, and if I do get them they're usually pretty basic.

For good sashimi (or really food of any type) hit up a place that's always busy. Hopefully the quality will be good and you know you'll be getting fresh(er) fish because the customer turnover rate ensures that you're not getting something that's been sitting on the line for 2 days.

Looking into A La Carte Sushi I like these:

-Eel (Unagi)

-Octopus (Tako I think)

-Cuttlefish

-Fatty Tuna is fuckin Fantastic

-Mantis Shrimp (Sako or Shako)


Cuttle Fish and Mantis Shrimp are incredibly hard to find at your average sushi place. But all of the above are fantastic.

I would stay away from any "Roe" (fish eggs) they are salty as shit..., Sea Urchin is friggin weird once it hits ur mouth it has the consistancy of pudding pretty much...

Anything aside from the above 2 would probably enjoy, hell you might even like the Roe or urchin sushi... it's just not my cup of tea.

I'm a sushi novice and at the moment i'm "with child" so i'm not supposed to eat raw fish!

I love california rolls, avacado rolls, philly rolls, and i've heard that the spicy tuna roll is awesome, but i haven't tried it as of yet. I'm getting sushi for lunch tomorrow, can't wait--I love it and the "sushi high" you get after eating it!

Spider rolls are fucking amazing. If you have not had them, I'd at least have one of the 4 there try it so you can have a taste. You won't regret it.

I thought only carnivorous, long-life fish like Tuna were affected by mercury levels? Oh well, if you're pregnant there's no reason to take chances I suppose.
