richest people in the world!
$40,000 = the 190,434,783 richest person in the world!

If my parents did the fusion dance, we'd be in the .01% range.
They probably put you in the top 10% for putting $1/year just because you had to have access to the internet to be on their website, and the bottom 10% of the world probably has never even seen a computer.
Ohmgee your signature is disturbing but in some way relates to the subject matter of the thread. Maybe we should donate that kid to a honduras village so they can eat for a decade.
I don't think that was true anyway, I put $1/year and it put me at the bottom of the list.Originally Posted by Khamsin
Anyway, to give you an idea of how poor some people are, when I was in vietnam there was a guy on the street selling these things, sorta hard to describe, i guess you could say they're sort of like crepes. He had this little cart set up where he was selling them. They cost 2,000 VND each, which is about 12.5 cents. However, the crepes aren't actually his, he buys them wholesale and resells them. So actually he only gets about 300 VND for each one he sells. That's 1.8 cents. He works from 4AM to 10PM 7 days a week selling crepes at a rate of about 7ish per hour. So that's 35700 VND per day, or about 13030500 VND per year at 17 hours/day 365 days/year.
Now, this was in Saigon and he doesn't actually live in Saigon. He lived in a small village in central vietnam and was sending money back to his family so they could live. Naturally, he needed a place to sleep in Saigon. Well, a place to sleep at the equivalent of the homeless shelter is about 2000 VND per day, or 730000 VND per year, leaving him 12300500 VND per year, or $775 / year to eat and take care of his family.
So yea, when people are posting talking about how there's no way $10,000 / year puts them in the top 40% or whatever, just remember perspective. Most of the world is poor.
Then I'm going to retire to China someday, in some grand mountain temple palace like you see in the movies, with marble columns and gold trim. It'll only cost me a few hundred bucks, too. I'll pay people a dime a day to bring me supplies.Originally Posted by divisortheory

You are joking but I wonder if you realize just how possible that really is. (Of course I would have chosen a non-Communist country.)Originally Posted by Khamsin
My mom is thinking about retiring in her home country, the Phillipines. With just her 401K and Social Security, she literally could live like a queen.
Even around the US, income is extremely relative. I remember being in the boonies of Pennsylvania once. This lady told me that she bought her four story Victorian home for about $50K. It would easily have gone for $5mil in Calif.

I Suck. I need a better job.... I can barely afford to live paycheck to paycheck.
I may make 27k a year but I need to make closer to 35 to be comfortable.

Well, I figured if I was up in the mountains somewhere in China, Tibet, or where ever those grand temple palaces are supposed to be in the movies, the government wouldn't bug me. Maybe I'd be wrong, but I could always just pay the Chinese government a few pennies a year to forget about me.Originally Posted by wyrmtung
