I don't think that was true anyway, I put $1/year and it put me at the bottom of the list.

Anyway, to give you an idea of how poor some people are, when I was in vietnam there was a guy on the street selling these things, sorta hard to describe, i guess you could say they're sort of like crepes. He had this little cart set up where he was selling them. They cost 2,000 VND each, which is about 12.5 cents. However, the crepes aren't actually his, he buys them wholesale and resells them. So actually he only gets about 300 VND for each one he sells. That's 1.8 cents. He works from 4AM to 10PM 7 days a week selling crepes at a rate of about 7ish per hour. So that's 35700 VND per day, or about 13030500 VND per year at 17 hours/day 365 days/year.

Now, this was in Saigon and he doesn't actually live in Saigon. He lived in a small village in central vietnam and was sending money back to his family so they could live. Naturally, he needed a place to sleep in Saigon. Well, a place to sleep at the equivalent of the homeless shelter is about 2000 VND per day, or 730000 VND per year, leaving him 12300500 VND per year, or $775 / year to eat and take care of his family.

So yea, when people are posting talking about how there's no way $10,000 / year puts them in the top 40% or whatever, just remember perspective. Most of the world is poor.
Then I'm going to retire to China someday, in some grand mountain temple palace like you see in the movies, with marble columns and gold trim. It'll only cost me a few hundred bucks, too. I'll pay people a dime a day to bring me supplies.
You are joking but I wonder if you realize just how possible that really is. (Of course I would have chosen a non-Communist country.)
Well, I figured if I was up in the mountains somewhere in China, Tibet, or where ever those grand temple palaces are supposed to be in the movies, the government wouldn't bug me. Maybe I'd be wrong, but I could always just pay the Chinese government a few pennies a year to forget about me.
Tibet would be the last place you would want to go if you wanted some peace and quiet.[/quote:34259]

But it always looks so serene in the movies! Maybe I need to go back in time, in addition to finding a spot high up in the mountains.

As for 0 income being among the poorest percentile yet richest person in the world, maybe it's some sort of zen philosophical thing. Afterall, a large number of people (in the USA even) have 0 income, and in fact, have negative income because they're spending their parents' money. But many of them live pretty damn well.

i don't know if you all are overanalyzing it or just being silly, lol. Anything from 0-100 dollars per year causes the webpage to not update the percentile display. As soon you type $101 it updates.

Yea but at least he can buy lunch for 12.5 cents, over where I live it costs at least $5. So you've got to put in perspective the cost of living.

it's more of a snack than an entire meal. A really cheap meal would be more like 50 cents. Still cheap, but $700 / year is still poor as hell any way you slice it, especially considering that's with 119 hour work weeks.

Wow there are poor people who need to do backbreaking hours of manual labor in order to survive, who would have thought. Still need to put it into perspective; paying 12 cents a day for housing makes $700/year look pretty good.

Apparently nobody in this thread, considering everyone is saying the website is "obviously wrong" for saying that $10k / year is in the 40% range.

Seriously, I spend around $8-10 for good lunch around here. (McDonalds is out of the question, although they can be a bit pricey sometimes too..)

Across the street, I can get a chicken caesar salad by itself for $8.50 (before tax). Without the chicken, it'd be $6.50 or something for a plain salad. The Wendy's Baconator that I tried when it came out was $7 (about $5 without a combo).

I live in Memphis and I don't eat out very often. I go to the store, buy stuff, and cook for myself. I rarely even buy frozen pre-cooked foods, because man that shit gets old. It costs me about $40/week to eat, give or take about 10 depending on what I have left over from previous weeks. That's 21 meals a week, so a little under $2/meal. I could easily spend between $5 and $8 for a meal if I went out to get it. Fast food is not the standard by which you should judge the cost of living. I'm pretty sure even in california you'd pay less per meal if you went to the store every week.

Well, when you put it that way, I suppose I could go to the world market and take advantage of the 10/$1 deal on ramen.

Could goto the Indian casinos and have their 5 dollar buffets. I had fish and chips today and it cost 7.25. I usually just goto the supermarket and get 88 cent cans of chef Boyahda. Cue shop of Fafnir with an apron and chef hat.
