Do Excess Assault rank up points carry over?

I am a Corporal on approximatly 21 points and our static tonight is going to be attempting 4 brand new assaults which hopefully will yeild a total of 20 rank up points.
My concern is that by completing 1 mission I should be ready to rank up but wont have the time to do so, so will the excess points past 25 I earn count towards my next rank up once I have done the rank up mission? or will they be lost and I have effectivily wasted a load of assault rank up points?

no, you need to rank up before you can get any points for that rank.

Or you could just do one new Assault to rank up, then make them wait for you. Going over by 1 point won't be the end of the world. >.>

Dont worry, thats what I meant. Do one mission then have them wait.
