    Stuck in zones on Vista

I'm running FFXI on Windows Vista (new PC, it came with Vista), but seems to have a problem zoning. I'll get stuck in zone, get the black screen with the Downloading Data thing blinking in the corner, and then it'll just get stuck there. I tried both with and without windower, and I've tried looking around, but I can't find anyone else with the same problem. It reminds me a lot of the dead zones from this winter.

If I log completely out of POL, and log back into the game, I'll be in the zone I was zoning into and everything will appear right, but I obviously can't keep doing this every time I zone. My graphics card is a Nivida GeForce 7350 LE and I downloaded the latest drivers. Oh, and if you're just gonna say "install XP," then find a different thread.

    Anyway - halp?

Turn off Windows Firewall and see if that helps.

Re: Stuck in zones on Vista

I did, and no such luck. ; ; However, I had it suggested to me that it might be due to me being on a brand new wireless network (my connectivity is apparently Poor, according to this little icon), but I won't be able to actually test that theory until in a week or two, when I can get an actual land line cable connection. In the meantime I'm doing a complete re-install... just because.

I had this problem with Peerguardian 2, need to allow all the Square Enix IPs otherwise it won't let you zone to certain zones

first off the best solution by far is install xp

you dont wanna do that so

make sure ipv6 is disabled (ffxi doesnt run on it so... and you dont really use it for anything atm)

turn off firewalls and internet security especially windows firewall....

other than these things im not sure what else to tell you

OK, a full re-install didn't fix it, but instead made it so I can't use Windower. >.< It will crash after I hit "Play" and it's supposed to go fulltime mode. Anyone know how to fix this?

Way to give some sound advice. FFXI doesn't use Outlook, make sure you disable Outlook.

vista uses it by default, it fucks up apps if your isp doesnt support it (most dont) work for an ISP and learn networking/OSes and come back plz kkthnxbai

Funny, because I do work for an ISP.

Edit: While I'm at it, if a program doesn't support IPv6, it won't use it, so just because its enabled/used by the OS doesn't mean everything uses it.

Control Panel > Classic View > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections > Right Click Local Area Connection > Properties > Uncheck IPv6

your best fix though is still installing xp... hell dual boot if you still want pretty little vista... but you wont have these issues w/ XP

This is definitely a network issue, make sure your firewall is set to allow FFXI through... or turn it off...

also is this all zones or just a few or is it a something that happens randomly sometimes?

Cant think of anything else that could possibly be blocking you... but its more than likely a vista only issue, and it may be something to do with that permissions protection "feature" but i'm not too sure on that

and snowknight installing aol and helping your friends with it is NOT working at an ISP

Re: Stuck in zones on Vista

I have no interest in installing XP when I know the game can work fine on Vista (several of my lsmates run on Vista, and none of them have experienced this problem). Downloading bootleg copies of OSs has always ended extremely badly for me, and a new one costs $ I can't afford to spend.

I always have the firewall turned off, it's the first thing I did when I booted up this PC for the first time.

My boyfriend and another friend of mine (who's currently playing just fine from his laptop right next to me) were both theorizing it's my connection. I zoned fine into my Mog House, but dc'd when I tried zoning out again. I'm on a wireless network, and my connection is mostly sitting at Poor, and only extremely briefly goes to Fair, but never above. My friend's laptop however, has Very Good, or Excellent connection at all times, so we think it might be the wireless network card that came with the PC that's simply not good enough, especially since I was zoning fine three days ago, when I was at my boyfriend's house and had my PC hooked up to his internet via actual cables. Unfortunately, I can't test this theory for sure until I can get a cable internet connection in a week or two. >.<

Thanks for all the assistance, though.

well then thats your problem... your wireless router should have wired ports on it, if its near your pc plug it in, you can also try moving your pc around so that it gets better reception =/ but i dont recommend doing much more than surfing on a wireless connection

Re: Stuck in zones on Vista

I don't really have a choice atm, since the building I live in (college students housing) only offer wireless connection. I can get my own cable connection from Comcast, but not until my actual apartment is ready (I'm living in a temporary room on a different floor atm, since my apartment is brand new this year and won't be ready until the end of next week at the earliest).

I bought a wireless USB adapter today, and I'm getting much better reception with it, zoned fine on a mule recently, and will try zoning on my main once Besieged is over.

On the other hand, I got a new and exciting symptom - now, my game freezes up for a split second every other second or so. Not just when I'm on my actual characters, but from the moment it's full-screen, ie my login screens also lag and freeze like that.

I've known numerous Directors of IT departments who were dumb as bricks.
