    Re: Apple vs PC

The only reason I see a Mac as a viable alternative to a Windows-based PC these days is that Macs now run on Intel-based chipsets which allow you to run Windows on a partition.

The company I currently work for uses Macs, but only because the president (it's a small company) got into Macs back in the day so now he makes everyone use them. We're wind energy company so it's pretty useless, but since I do communications and PR work - which includes designing and writing publications - having a Mac is handy for InDesign but otherwise it serves no purpose beyond being shiny and requires almost no maintenance.

Would I ever get a Mac for myself if it wasn't required for work? Very unlikely. I am thinking of getting a MacBook through my company for business and pleasure purposes; especially after seeing how well FFXI runs on my girlfriend's MacBook.

I do really, really hate the entire Mac lifestyle bullshit. I really do want to punch every dumbass hipster with his iPod, iPhone, and MacBook sipping Starbucks caramel macchiatos and thinking he's all 'counter-culture' for having his parents buy his broke ass all this commercial crap. Apple produces just scream 'scene' to me and I want to stay the fuck away from that.

Oh, and until they started allowing right-clicking, that was 99.99999% of my reason to not use Macs. Yeah the UI's pretty but fuck your human interface licks donkey balls.

Sort of... on the one hand, you have the option of the iMac, which is basically a monitor with everything built into it (non upgradable), then you have the Mac Pro, which IS upgradable, but its -way- more expensive.

    More general response:
I have always used a PC, but when I went to college they insisted on a Mac laptop so I got one. For any digital graphic work there really isn't any other option, just because the quality of the screen is far above anything you're going to see on a PC laptop. I kind of fought with it, but it really is a solid little unit.

Now graduated, I'm building a brand new desktop computer, and I thought long and hard on the Mac vs. PC thing... My current (dying) monitor is a 19" beast of a CRT. To get a new LCD monitor for a PC that was of a high enough quality is extremely expensive. I don't want an iMac. To build a Mac Pro costs significantly more than to build a PC with equivalent specs. I decided on putting a PC together, but picking up a 20" Mac Cinema Display (mmm) since they're cross compatible now. Best of both worlds! Only problem is that apparantly Mac doesnt feel like giving Windows users DRIVERS for their monitors, so I've gotta download some homebrew ones. I expect printing to be even more of an adventure than it usually is......

I had heard that macs weren't as susceptible to virii(? ) as PCs, but I'm guessing since you can load OSX on a PC now then you can get the same thing...

    Re: Apple vs PC

Doesn't matter who you are or what OS you prefer, going up to another person at random and telling them their computer sucks makes you a douche. Windows fanboy, mac fanboy, the only difference is the name.

Granted, I might be sitting across from you laughing to myself about your huge clunky dell laptop, but I'm not gonna be a prick about it. Whatever computer makes you happy, gets the job done, and is affordable to you.

Personally I have my powerbook, its 4 years old and still kicking (battery is a piece of shit though). And a self-built pc at home for games. Now if I had the spare cash I'd put together a linux machine just so I could say I had all three.

Yes you can install OSX on a PC with half of its functionality unworkable, amazing. I like Macbook pros cuz they are damn good laptops and worth every penny.

    Re: Apple vs PC

I have both, I use my Mac more because it is newer. Their support is pretty nice in my opinion, my laptop stopped working a few weeks ago, went in to an Apple Store, had them look at it, 2 days later I had my laptop back and working again (yes it was parts replacement in case someone thinks "omg they took so long for that"). The most popular PC brand I've had recently was Alienware, and while they also had great service, it took a bit longer. Granted both of these things are paid warranties, but it is nice to have service when you need it, and not have to pay additional money.

Honestly though, it is all preference. If there was an honest and significant disparity between the power, capability, etc of Macs and PCs, the amount of users would be drastically different. Granted Mac users are already a minority, they would not have close to as much as they do with an inferior product.

    Re: Apple vs PC

I would never in a million years use a mac. But, that's simply because I have never liked them in the past and I really don't care to buy one and see if it's changed to be more user friendly. It is so much easier to get around on a PC imo and to get things done. It's easier to maintain on your own without having to pay someone else to fix it or change out a part.

Plus, Mac's are just ugly as hell and the OS is just very annoying to me. Windows is great, in old PC's so was DOS.

I could care less about macfag's if they wanna use that crap they can be my guests, but i'll never touch one as long as I have the choice of what i'm using and it's not for work. My work uses PC's though for our desktops/laptops.

    Not less susceptible.

Nobody gives enough of a fuck to code viruses for macs.

I am not too fond of mac os (getting used to it though). But being able to surf and do other things while editing/saving a super sized file? I am game. This thing is a monster. On my windows pc, I would click "save" and go get some tea, take a shower or w/ever. Good times :/ Call it good programming or w/ever, macs are significantly more efficient on certain software. Heck, even early model G4/5's can still keep up with latest software fairly decent.

Boot Camp is better than I expected(Having another OS in my computer does not bother me, lolfanboys). Pretty much installed Windows only for FFXI and at maxed out graphics its running very, very neat. Going to try Oblivion sometime.

    Re: Apple vs PC

As previously stated osx vs windows is a far more valid argument, especially now that macs run on x86 Intel processors like everyone else.

But seriously. If you want to take advantage of OSX architecture and functionality, you might as well just plop Red Hat or Slackware on your much, much cheaper hp/dell/IBM laptop rather than shelling out a couple hundred to thousand dollars extra on some white plastic and an apple logo.
