The only thing that makes me ponder Mac & PC (Windows) is how the hell a small (relatively speaking) company like Apple can create a more stable and modern looking OS, while MS just lags behind and produces hit or miss (Win98 = win/Millennium = fail/XP = win/Vista = fail) operating systems. You'd think being the biggest software company in the known universe would enable them to make the best software. Oh well, just goes to show biggest != best.

Vista is unstable? Hasn't crashed on me yet. Firefox crashes a lot but that's not MS's fault.

I hated macOS forever and ever. OSX came out and that was ok, but guess what, it's built off *nix. Linux and bsd distros have been doing everything osx does 50 times better for ages. Mac put out a few good programs and managed to carve out a niche for itself where it can be successful. OSX is not new or innovative, really. Apple is just really good at making people think it is.

I had heard that macs weren't as susceptible to virii(? ) as PCs, but I'm guessing since you can load OSX on a PC now then you can get the same thing...

there is actually a hack that will let you run leopard on pc, though you have to jump through a lot of hoops. if only i can recall what the hack is.

Apple has traditionally sucked at making an operating system, and back in the day, anyone with a clue in OS design who worked at that company went to work for NeXT during the Steve Jobs exile. MacOS Classic is a steaming pile of horseshit, but it beat out NeXT since Apple had already carved their own niche market that would buy their shit no matter how bad it really was. If you thought Windows 95 was bad, you probably couldn't fathom using MacOS 9 because its multitasking was just so much worse. Apple got their head out of their ass unsurprisingly at the same time NeXT was acquired.

I disagree that Linux distributions are doing what OS X does, better; however, there are some areas in which Apple has used open source software instead of writing their own solution simply because the open source solution was the best. Samba is the most notable example I can think of. If you connect to a SMB/CIFS share in OS X, you're using Samba. As a package, OS X is still far better polished than any Linux distribution available, and it's my feeling that there are better applications developed for OS X. I still respect Linux as a server platform, but it still leaves a weird feeling with me on the desktop.

Oh, and just because OS X runs on Intel-based Apple computers doesn't mean that it'll run on every PC. There's one major gotcha with that: go find a mainstream AMD or Intel board that doesn't have a BIOS and instead uses EFI. It's an open spec that you can read right on Intel's website, I believe, but the only people using it are Apple. That's not to say that it won't ever run on any random PC, as people have been dedicating a lot of time towards "fixing" that issue, though I don't think it will ever be officially sanctioned by Apple.
